I lift my eyes toward the door. Behind it, in the neighboring room, Léo still sleeps. His gentle breathing lulled me all night.
Mila, though, stayed awake. I heard her pacing, pausing, starting again. Her anxiety vibrated through the wall.
I close my eyes.
Leave.
Abandon everything.

I drag a hand over my face. My palms are damp, my heart pounds so hard it sickens me.
Lorenzo promised an escape. A way out. Safety.

The door cracks open. Mila.
Her dark hair is hastily tied back. Her eyes fix on me, shadowed but sharp.
