Chapter 4 - MEETING THE PARENTS

David and Jennifer stood outside the grand mansion, the sound of classical music and gentle chatter drifting through the air. David's grip on Jennifer's hand tightened as he led her to the entrance.

"Remember, just be yourself," David whispered, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

Jennifer nodded, her heart racing. She had never been to a place like this before. The mansion was breathtaking, with crystal chandeliers and expensive artwork adorning the walls.

Inside, David's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loris, greeted them warmly. Jennifer was taken aback by their kindness and genuine smiles.

"Welcome, Jennifer," Mrs. Loris said, embracing her warmly. "We're so glad you could join us."

David's father, a tall, imposing figure, shook Jennifer's hand firmly. "We're delighted to meet you, young lady."

As they sat down for dinner, Jennifer felt a sense of unease. She knew she was here to pretend to be David's girlfriend, but she couldn't help feeling like she didn't belong.

The conversation flowed easily, with David's parents asking her questions about her interests and hobbies. Jennifer found herself opening up, sharing stories about her love of reading and her dreams.

David watched her with a mixture of amusement and admiration. He hadn't expected Jennifer to fit in so seamlessly.

As the evening drew to a close, David's parents smiled at each other, seemingly pleased with what they saw.

"David, we're glad you've found someone like Jennifer," Mrs. Loris said, her eyes shining with warmth. "She's lovely."

David's grip on Jennifer's hand tightened, a subtle signal for her to play along. "I know, right?" he said, smiling at Jennifer. "I'm a lucky man."

Jennifer's heart skipped a beat as David's eyes met hers. For a moment, she forgot this was all just an act.

As they left the mansion, Jennifer turned to David. "That wasn't so bad," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

David chuckled. "You're a natural."

Jennifer smiled, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe this arrangement wouldn't be so bad after allAs they walked back to the car, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over her. The meeting with David's parents had gone better than she expected. They seemed kind and genuinely interested in getting to know her.

"You're smiling," David said, noticing the change in her expression. "Does that mean you're enjoying this fake relationship thing?"

Jennifer's smile faltered for a moment before she replied, "It's not so bad, I guess. Your parents are nice."

David chuckled. "They can be when they want to be. But don't worry, they're not always this pleasant."

Jennifer raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What are they like when they're not being pleasant?"

David's grin grew wider. "Let's just say they're very... persistent when it comes to getting what they want."

Jennifer's eyes widened in understanding. "You mean, like, with you getting married?"

David nodded. "Exactly. They've been on my case about settling down for years. But I think tonight went well. They seemed to really like you."

Jennifer felt a flutter in her chest at the thought. "I'm glad I could help."

As they reached the car, David opened the door for Jennifer and she slid inside. Once he was seated beside her, he turned to her and said, "You know, you're really good at this. I think we make a pretty convincing couple."

Jennifer laughed. "Thanks, I think. But don't get too comfortable, I'm still getting paid to do this."

David's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Oh, I'm very aware of that. But still, you're a natural."

The drive back to David's apartment was quiet, with Jennifer lost in thought. She couldn't help but wonder what the future held for her and David, even if it was just a fake relationship.

When they arrived, David walked her to the door and said, "Thanks again for tonight. You were great."

Jennifer smiled. "No problem. Thanks for having me."

As she entered the apartment, Jennifer couldn't shake off the feeling that this arrangement was going to be more complicated than she thought. And not just because of David's parents.

The next morning, Jennifer woke up to the sound of David moving around in the kitchen. She got out of bed and joined him, finding him making breakfast.

"Morning," he said, looking up from the stove. "Sleep well?"

Jennifer nodded, taking a seat at the counter. "Yeah, thanks. What's cooking?"

David smiled. "Just some scrambled eggs and toast. Nothing too fancy."

Jennifer's eyes lit up. "Sounds perfect."

As they ate breakfast together, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of domesticity wash over her. It was a strange feeling, one she wasn't sure she was comfortable with.

But as she looked at David, she saw something in his eyes that made her heart skip a beat. Maybe, just maybe, this arrangement wouldn't be so bad after all.As they finished breakfast, David glanced at his watch. "I have a meeting in an hour. I'll be working from home today, but I need to get going soon."

Jennifer nodded, feeling a sense of relief that she wouldn't be alone in the apartment all day. "I'll just get ready for the day, then," she said, heading towards the bedroom.

As she showered and dressed, Jennifer couldn't help but think about the previous night's dinner with David's parents. She had been nervous, but they had seemed kind and welcoming. She wondered what David's childhood had been like, growing up with parents who were so invested in his life.

When she emerged from the bedroom, David was on the phone, pacing back and forth in the living room. Jennifer sat down on the couch, watching him with interest. He seemed so confident and in control, even when he was on the phone.

After a few minutes, David ended the call and turned to Jennifer. "Sorry about that," he said. "Work stuff. I'm going to head out soon, but I wanted to talk to you about something first."

Jennifer's curiosity was piqued. "What is it?" she asked, leaning forward slightly.

"I was thinking," David said, sitting down beside her on the couch. "Since we're pretending to be in a relationship, it would be good if we had some photos together. You know, for social media and stuff."

Jennifer nodded, understanding. "That makes sense. What did you have in mind?"

David pulled out his phone and started scrolling through his camera roll. "I was thinking we could take some photos together today. Maybe some casual shots, just to make it look like we're a normal couple."

Jennifer smiled, feeling a little more at ease. "Okay, that sounds like fun. When were you thinking of taking the photos?"

"How about now?" David asked, standing up and holding out his hand to help Jennifer up.

Jennifer took his hand, feeling a spark of electricity as their palms touched. "Okay, let's do it," she said, smiling up at him.

As they posed for photos in the apartment, Jennifer couldn't help but feel like she was getting into character. She was starting to feel like a real girlfriend, rather than just a pretend one. And that was a little scary. As they took photos, Jennifer couldn't help but laugh at David's silly poses. He was trying to make her smile, and it was working. For a moment, she forgot that this was all just an act.

"Okay, let's take a serious one," David said, pulling her close. "Smile naturally, like you're happy to be with me."

Jennifer felt a flutter in her chest as David's arm wrapped around her waist. She looked up at him, and their eyes met. For a moment, time stood still.

The camera clicked, capturing the moment. David looked at the photo and smiled. "Perfect," he said. "This one will definitely do."

As they finished taking photos, Jennifer felt a sense of accomplishment. She was starting to get into the swing of this fake relationship thing.

"Thanks for doing this," David said, putting his phone away. "I think we have some great shots."

Jennifer smiled. "No problem. I'm glad I could help."

As they stood there, David's eyes locked onto hers. For a moment, Jennifer felt like he was looking at her, really looking at her, rather than just seeing her as a pretend girlfriend.

"Hey, I should get going," David said, breaking the moment. "I have that meeting to get to."

Jennifer nodded, feeling a little disappointed that he was leaving. "Okay, I'll see you later then."

David smiled and headed out the door, leaving Jennifer to wonder what the future held for them.

As she sat down on the couch, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of uncertainty. She was getting into this fake relationship thing, but what did it mean for her future? As Jennifer sat on the couch, she couldn't help but think about the photos they had taken. She had felt a spark of electricity when David's arm wrapped around her waist, and she couldn't deny the way her heart skipped a beat when their eyes met.

She stood up and walked over to the window, looking out at the city below. She felt a sense of disconnection from the world outside, like she was living in a bubble with David.

As she stood there, lost in thought, Jennifer's phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw a text from her aunt.

"Hey, just checking in," the text read. "How's life with the rich boyfriend?"

Jennifer rolled her eyes. Her aunt was always nosy, always trying to get in on the action.

"Everything's fine," Jennifer replied, typing out a quick response. "Just getting used to the new arrangement."

Her aunt responded almost immediately. "Good. Remember, you're doing this for us, okay? For our family."

Jennifer felt a surge of frustration. She was doing this for herself, not just for her aunt and cousins. But she didn't bother responding, instead putting her phone away and focusing on the present moment.

As the day went on, Jennifer found herself feeling restless. She decided to explore the apartment, looking for something to do. She wandered into David's study, taking in the rows of books and the large desk.

On the desk, there was a photo of David with his parents. Jennifer picked it up, studying it. David looked happy in the photo, carefree.

As she held the photo, Jennifer felt a sense of curiosity about David's past. What had he been like as a child? Had he always been so driven and ambitious?

Just as she was getting lost in thought, Jennifer heard the door open. David walked in, a smile on his face.

"Hey, I forgot my wallet," he said, spotting it on the coffee table. "Thanks for waiting around."

Jennifer smiled, feeling a little flutter in her chest. "No problem," she said. "I was just exploring."

David's eyes landed on the photo in her hand, and he walked over to her. "Ah, that's an old photo," he said. "From when my parents were still trying to convince me to take over the family business."

Jennifer smiled, feeling a sense of connection to David. "You look happy in it," she said.

David's eyes met hers, and for a moment, Jennifer felt like he was seeing her, really seeing her, for the first time.

"I was happy then," David said, his voice low. "But life has a way of changing us, doesn't it?"

Jennifer nodded, feeling a sense of understanding. She knew exactly what he meant. As they stood there, Jennifer felt a sense of connection with David that she hadn't felt before. It was like they were sharing a moment, a moment that went beyond their fake relationship.

David's eyes held hers, and Jennifer felt like she was drowning in their depths. She couldn't look away, even if she wanted to.

Suddenly, David's phone rang, breaking the spell. He glanced at the screen and sighed. "I need to take this," he said, answering the call.

Jennifer nodded, feeling a little disappointed that the moment was over. She turned to walk away, but David caught her arm.

"Wait," he said. "I want to talk to you about something."

Jennifer's heart skipped a beat as she turned back to him. "What is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

David's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Jennifer thought she saw something there, something that looked almost like attraction.

But then he spoke, and his words were like a bucket of cold water. "I was thinking," he said, "that we should go out on a real date. You know, to make our relationship look more authentic."

Jennifer felt a pang of disappointment. Of course, it was all just about appearances. She was just a pretend girlfriend, after all.

But she nodded, playing along. "Okay, that sounds like a good idea," she said, trying to sound casual.

David smiled, and Jennifer's heart skipped a beat. "Great," he said. "I'll plan something for tomorrow night."

As David continued talking on the phone, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She had no idea what David had planned, but she was eager to find out.

The rest of the day flew by in a blur, with Jennifer's mind preoccupied with thoughts of the upcoming date. She couldn't help but wonder what David had in store for her.

As the evening drew to a close, Jennifer felt a sense of anticipation building up inside her. She had no idea what tomorrow would bring, but she was ready to face it head-on.The next evening, Jennifer stood in front of the mirror, smoothing out her dress. She had no idea what David had planned, but she wanted to look perfect.

When David arrived at the door, Jennifer's eyes widened in surprise. He looked dashing in a tailored suit, his hair perfectly styled.

"You look stunning," David said, offering his arm. "Shall we?"

Jennifer smiled, feeling a flutter in her chest. She took his arm, and they headed out to the car.

As they drove through the city, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She had no idea where they were going, but she was eager to find out.

When they arrived at a rooftop restaurant, Jennifer's eyes widened in amazement. The view of the city was breathtaking, and the atmosphere was romantic.

David smiled, leading her to their table. "I thought you'd like this," he said, pulling out her chair.

Jennifer sat down, feeling like a princess. The dinner was exquisite, and the company was even better.

As they talked and laughed, Jennifer felt herself getting lost in David's eyes. She couldn't help but wonder if this was all just an act, or if there was something more beneath the surface.

As the night drew to a close, David walked Jennifer back to the car. "Thank you for tonight," he said, his voice low and husky. "I had a great time."

Jennifer smiled, feeling a sense of disappointment that the night was over. "I had a great time too," she said, looking up at him.

David's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Jennifer thought he might kiss her. But instead, he smiled and opened the car door.

"Let's get you home," he said, his voice gentle.

As they drove back to David's apartment, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of longing. She wasn't sure what she wanted, but she knew she wanted more of tonight.
