Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Fierce!
It was mid-October, and the signs of autumn were pronounced. Yellow leaves twirled through the air, carried by the wind, eventually settling on the apprentices' garments.
In the spacious training ground behind the Medicine King Hall, Chen Ku stood his ground, watching Jiang Shaoyou walk directly toward him. He couldn't help but clasp his hands in greeting.
"Senior Brother Jiang, do you wish for me to spar with you?"
Chen Ku hadn't yet figured out why Jiang Shaoyou wanted to befriend him, but he couldn't deny the benefits he'd received from Jiang Shaoyou, which made him speak more kindly and politely.
"I'm afraid I'm not capable of that..."
This wasn't false modesty, but the simple truth.
After all, having been at the Medicine King Hall for two or three months, he knew well that children from wealthy county families, like Jiang Shaoyou, had started martial arts training early in life. They were also typically a few years older than him. With all these advantages, as long as they weren't too incompetent, they were merely one step away from reaching Inner Qi. In other words, they were individuals with both strength and background—not mindless second-generation heirs. Their entrance into the Medicine King Hall was to pursue 'advanced studies' in its Secret Fighting Methods, Fundamental Diagrams, Qigong, and other inheritances.
"Junior Brother Chen, don't be too modest," Jiang Shaoyou said, smiling at Chen Ku. Jiang Shaoyou was dressed as a Medicine King Hall Apprentice, yet he couldn't hide his princely and affluent demeanor. "I saw you drawing the bow the other day. I could tell you have a strong Root Bone; even if your Realm isn't sufficient, your Divine Power can compensate for it. Besides, that little Spirit Ape must be of some use to you, right? Let's not be strangers; we'll just spar lightly. How does that sound?"
When Chen Ku heard Jiang Shaoyou mention the Spirit Ape, he knew he couldn't refuse further. Doing so would seem ungracious. So, he clasped his hands and said, "Then please, Senior Brother Jiang, go easy on me."
Not far away, on a two- or three-tiered wooden platform in the training field, Ke Yansheng was closely watching Chen Ku. When he saw Chen Ku actually squaring off against the young master from the Jinshi Academy, he frowned.
Has this kid offended the young master from Tongwen House?
The Daji Dynasty had a population of over several billion. Baojiao County was a large county, with a total of 100,000 households. At least 10,000 of these households were within the ten-li radius of the county town, and only 1,000 households resided in the Inner City. Those who could establish homes in the outer city were, at a minimum, skilled artisans capable of supporting themselves; otherwise, they couldn't afford to live in the city at all. Those residing in the Inner City could be considered modestly wealthy. Without several hundred taels of silver, one couldn't afford the expensive properties there. But these were merely the moderately wealthy, small households.
So, what defined a truly affluent and influential family—a great household? These were establishments like Tongwen House, Heyuan Escort Agency, Hongyan Tower, Medicine King Hall, the Fish and Dragon Association, and the Firewood Iron Shop, among others—colossi, each monopolizing a certain industry. Among them, the Medicine King Hall, the Fish and Dragon Association, and the Firewood Iron Shop were especially renowned for their Martial Arts prowess. While Tongwen House, the Heyuan Escort Agency, and Hongyan Tower might not match these three giants in terms of Martial Arts foundation, their financial strength was something ordinary people could scarcely imagine in a lifetime.
Take Tongwen House, for example. It practically owned an entire street in Baojiao County dedicated to 'literary antiques, calligraphy, and paintings,' making it the undisputed leader—the Sect Leader, so to speak—of this industry. If one were to ignore liquid cash and only consider the value of its holdings, the vast wealth of Tongwen House would undoubtedly make it the wealthiest in Baojiao County. If all the items on that street were converted into silver, their assets would be worth tens of millions of taels. That Baojiao County could be so opulently rich was largely due to its geographical position and abundant natural resources.
So, why would the young masters of families already possessing such wealth still learn Martial Arts? This was due to a sort of unspoken rule. The Imperial Court held imperial examinations. Passing them could grant one the Merit of a Scholar. In the Daji Dynasty, martial prowess was valued over literary skills. Simply passing the 'Martial Student' examination—also known as becoming a Military Scholar—allowed a Martial Artist to gain the Merit of a Scholar. This status enabled a 'tax exemption on thousands of taels.' Literary students, however, needed the Merit of a Scholar to qualify for such exemptions. Thus, how could wealthy families not hope for their children to become Scholars or Military Scholars, thereby exempting themselves from hefty taxes? So, even if some children were prodigals, these affluent families would choose at least one child to strive for Merit for the family's sake!
However, don't assume that securing a spot as a Military Scholar was easy. Not only was there a limit on spots—each county could only produce ten 'Military Scholars' per year—but there were also restrictions based on age and skill. These were: under twenty years of age, and possessing strength at or above the Inner Qi Realm. This barrier alone was enough to stump ninety percent of ordinary aspirants. Furthermore, the final unified 'martial examination' held by the county government office, which only selected ten individuals, eliminated another large swathe of candidates.
...
Ke Yansheng stared menacingly at Jiang Shaoyou, who had already positioned himself opposite Chen Ku. Tongwen House, no matter how rich you are, I hope this boy of yours isn't some spoiled brat. Otherwise, if he dares to bully a True Seedling of my Butcher Court, I'll definitely teach him a lesson!
Jiang Shaoyou stood on the packed yellow earth, smiling at Chen Ku, who was about three zhang away.
"Junior Brother Chen, rest assured. With my family's Martial Arts, I've already achieved the 'Unity of Intent and Force.' More recently, I acquired the Spirit Ape, and in this past month, I've also comprehended the Fundamental Diagram of our Medicine King Hall's 'Spiritual Monkey Through-The-Back Fist.' Logically speaking, I'm about two minor Realms higher than you. So, this time, I'm just looking to spar with you for fun, without any killing intent."
"Please!"
After saying this, he signaled for Chen Ku to make the first move. After all, he already held advantages in Realm, Force Power, and Cultivation. To make the first move now wouldn't be sparring, but intentional suppression.
Just sparring for fun? Is he trying to see my foundation? To gauge whether I'm worth further acquaintance?
This thought flashed through Chen Ku's mind. Then, he thought: I also want to see what level of opponent I can handle under fair conditions.
His gaze hardened slightly. Alright, let's try it then.
"Please, Senior Brother, enlighten me!"
As soon as he finished speaking—BANG! His canvas shoe stamped the ground, toes twisting, power surging up from the earth. He stomped the packed soil, creating a shallow pit as mud splattered. Then, kicking his legs and swinging his waist, he instantly sprang forward three zhang to face Jiang Shaoyou. His spine undulated like a mountain range as power exploded from his hand, his fingers like a blade, slashing towards Jiang Shaoyou's neck. This move, using his hand as a blade, was the 'Side Flip Force Chop' from the Bone-chopping Butcher Blade style.
SWOOSH—
The air seemed to part with a sharp hum. Combined with the speed of Chen Ku's skinny dog-like pounce, and the sudden burst of over four thousand jin of power, all transmitted into his palm—it was as if a towering, blood-soaked butcher had raised a great cleaver, treating Jiang Shaoyou like meat on a block—fierce and tyrannical!
Jiang Shaoyou's eyes widened. Force Power at Great Achievement? He only became an Apprentice a month ago, and he's already reached Great Achievement in Force Power? His whole body interconnected, able to direct force at will? Jiang Shaoyou felt the terrifying hum of displaced air before his neck. His mind raced, and then, sensing something more, his expression shifted slightly. Wait... this hand-blade? How many jin of Force Power is this? Why is it so ferocious?!
Ke Yansheng, still watching Chen Ku and Jiang Shaoyou closely, was both surprised and delighted by the results of Cultivation evident in the explosive momentum of Chen Ku's startling attack. He... I just made a casual guess that day... Turns out, he really achieved Great Achievement in Force Power within a month, fully connecting it throughout his body? This kid! Is he truly such a genius?
Jiang Shaoyou, however, had no time to ponder such things. Facing Chen Ku's fierce hand-blade, he narrowed his eyes. In a flash, his right leg stepped back slightly, creating space and evading the strike aimed at his neck. Simultaneously, he squatted, his posture taking on the 'Ape Squatting Stance.' His body's Force Power surged as his right hand scooped upwards from below.
BOOM! The air in front of his chest seemed to explode outwards!
It was the 'White Ape Scooping the Moon'! Like a cannonball, his fist shot towards Chen Ku's hand-blade, clearly intending a head-on collision.
But which would prove superior? Chen Ku's explosive Root Bone, backed by over four thousand jin of power, or Jiang Shaoyou's more established Realm and higher Cultivation?
Chapter 55: Chapter 55 Excellent
BOOM!
A fist and a palm collided, the impact generating a tremendous sound from the clash of muscular and skeletal Force Power.
Jiang Shaoyou's palm was large, and his fist naturally became larger after the special exertion of Force Power. In contrast, Chen Ku's palm seemed rather slender and frail.
Yet, it was precisely this slender and frail palm that bulged with veins and muscles, densely packed and evenly distributed, unleashing an explosive Force Power of four to five thousand pounds in an instant.
This momentary collision of fist and palm showcased Jiang Shaoyou's deeply rooted Inner Strength cultivation, but Chen Ku's Force Power was clearly far more immense and fierce.
So much so that after the hard clash, although Jiang Shaoyou stood his ground, his feet instantly sank into two deep imprints as if he had stepped into mud, his entire body lowering by about four to five inches. This was due to him redirecting all of Chen Ku's fierce and overwhelming Force Power into the ground. To maintain his stance without moving while doing so demonstrated the incredibly precise control he had over his own Force Power.
So strong! His Martial Arts Realm is much higher than mine!
This was the first time Chen Ku had fought openly and honestly with someone, let alone with an individual at the Unity of Intent and Force Realm, two full Realms higher than himself. In this single exchange, he immediately perceived the disparity between them.
"Junior Brother Chen, what fierce Force Power!" Jiang Shaoyou's eyes lit up, and he praised rather than showed surprise. "Indeed, I wasn't wrong about you. Be careful; your Senior Brother is about to get serious."
Before the fight, although he had high hopes for Chen Ku, he could hardly have imagined that Chen Ku possessed such terrifying Root Bone. This far exceeded his estimations. To think that someone two minor Realms below him could strike with enough brute force to make his feet sink into the ground! He could no longer afford a casual attitude; he had to take this seriously. Otherwise, a single misstep could lead to his own major embarrassment.
As soon as he finished speaking, Jiang Shaoyou maintained his crouched stance. His feet, however, began to churn like a mixer, his Force Power grinding and turning, pulverizing the mud and gravel beneath them into powder. Then, with a single stomp, the earth beneath him billowed outwards, a testament to the terrifying and heavy Force Power in that kick.
With this forceful stomp, the generated Force Power surged from the ground, through his legs, waist, across his Dantian, then to his shoulders and elbows, transmitted layer by layer until it reached his fists and fingers.
EXPLODE!
Clenching his fists and fingers, he made the air vibrate, sending a spiraling, rope-like Force Power directly toward Chen Ku's palm.
Chen Ku instantly felt his muscles and bones twisting under the Secretly Transmitted Force Power delivered by Jiang Shaoyou's powerful stomp.
CRACKLE! CRACKLE!
The sleeve covering the back of his hand, assaulted by the Force Power, was twisted and ripped apart, shred by shred!
Unity of Move and Force, Spirit Monkey Treading on Earth!
Chen Ku was startled. He immediately recognized this as the first combination of the Internal Tri-Integration: Unity of Move and Force, where each move contained a Secretly Transmitted Force Power.
Jiang Shaoyou's move, Spirit Monkey Treading on Earth, originated from the Spirit Ape Knocking Mountain Stick. He had executed it as a Fist Technique, its Force Power twisting and surging. If performed with a weapon, it would have produced the effect of a high-speed, vibrating, spinning drill!
I can't take this head-on!
Chen Ku swiftly retracted his hand. Simultaneously, his foot subtly gripped the ground, his knee tilted upward, and his right leg shot out like a hidden assassin unsheathing a sharp sword, kicking at Jiang Shaoyou's ankle.
It was the stealthy leg technique, Yellow Dog Peeing, a hidden dagger revealed when the map is unrolled. This silent kick, carrying the Force Power of four to five thousand pounds, was unleashed explosively in an instant, yet it generated no sound of rushing wind during its execution.
This left Jiang Shaoyou completely unprepared. Only when the kick was about to land did a frantic alarm flare in his Spirit.
The proficiency of this technique...
Not allowing himself time for further thought or shock, Jiang Shaoyou swiftly adjusted. The Force Power in his fist slightly eased as he rapidly shifted his center of gravity and Force Power to the top of his foot. With a twist of his knee, he dodged the incoming leg and then, in a sudden counter-move, kicked back.
This kick, in stark contrast to Chen Ku's silent and stealthy leg attack, carried a much greater presence! It was completely overt, with explosive Force Power scattering in all directions. The moment the Force Power was unleashed, the resulting wind stirred up the dirt from the ground, as if a bomb had suddenly detonated.
BANG!
The two legs collided. Chen Ku's stealthy leg's Force Power finally erupted, like a subterranean mine, quietly placed, at last exploding!
BOOM!
The yellow soil beneath their feet was churned up by the Force Power, forming a mini whirlwind that spun furiously as it spread outwards.
On the training field, although others were sparring and exchanging pointers, none created such a grand spectacle. The commotion instantly drew the attention of many.
"Is that the Young Owner of Tongwen House and Chen Ku from the Butcher Court?!"
"Those two?"
"They come from such different backgrounds, yet they can create such a commotion?"
Many of those sparring paused and began to watch intently.
Ke Yansheng secretly grew anxious. Such a loud commotion! Elder Yang from Jinshi Academy will soon find out who requested the Thousand-Jun Stick.
At the same time, he marveled inwardly at Chen Ku's frightening talent. Yellow Dog Peeing. That's one of the most inconspicuous techniques from Lower Grade Martial Arts. Yet Chen Ku actually managed to train such a move to... that level must be Perfection! Incredible!
After the exchange of leg attacks, Chen Ku instantly leaped back, creating distance. Before he could even steady himself, he heard Jiang Shaoyou exclaim, "Was that Yellow Dog Peeing just now? To conceal such terrifying Force Power and yet make no sound? That must be Perfection! Junior Brother Chen, you've truly astounded me!"
"It's just a rudimentary skill, unworthy of Senior Brother Jiang's praise. Shall we continue?" Chen Ku responded.
He felt his legs aching slightly but was sure Jiang Shaoyou's weren't faring much better. Even if his opponent was protected by Force Power, he wasn't made of steel reinforcement.
Jiang Shaoyou shook his aching legs and said softly, "This should have ended here, but you've kindled my competitive spirit. I'm clearly two Realms higher, yet we fought to a draw. That doesn't reflect well on me. So now, I must imbue my fists with Divine Intent."
A chill ran through Chen Ku's heart. Fists bearing Divine Intent... Divine Intent! The secretly transmitted Mental Realm from the Fundamental Diagram!
"Please enlighten me!" Chen Ku declared.
After Chen Ku spoke, he saw Jiang Shaoyou standing motionless, his fists positioned. Astonishingly, Jiang Shaoyou seemed to embody a Spirit Ape right where he stood, vivid and striking. Once he assumed this stance, his entire spiritual presence changed. He resembled an Old Ape, exuding an untamable aura that assaulted the Spirit, as he addressed Chen Ku, "Junior Brother Chen, continue your attack. Let's test this one last time, and then we'll stop!"
Chen Ku also wanted to experience firsthand what kind of Realm "fists with Divine Intent" represented.
After a moment's thought, he decided against using the Blood Blade Finger. Instead, he pushed off the ground. A surge of ferocity and majesty, combined with the twisting of his waist and spinal muscles, propelled his entire body forward. He transformed into a Fierce Tiger, pouncing towards Jiang Shaoyou and striking with a ferocious palm—Tiger-Form Loose Hand!
With this pounce, all the Force Power in his body erupted, nearly conjuring a gale, a force exceeding his usual limits, all pouring out. The disadvantage, however, was also clear: if the pounce missed or failed to connect, his Force Power would be spent.
The Divine Intent of a tiger, yet it lacks refinement? Jiang Shaoyou raised an eyebrow. Nevertheless, he could clearly feel that the fierce Force Power behind this pounce far surpassed any of Chen Ku's previous punches or palm strikes.
Unfortunately for Chen Ku, the Spirit Ape's advantage lay in its agility. Its Divine Intent was naturally nimble, and Jiang Shaoyou was ready to unleash a move embodying the Unity of Intent and Force—Old Ape Hanging Seal!
Just as Chen Ku and Jiang Shaoyou were about to clash again:
"STOP!"
A figure, like a gust of wind, suddenly rushed between them, accompanied by two currents of air. This person stood firm, intercepting Chen Ku's loose hand and Jiang Shaoyou's Old Ape Hanging Seal.
"Master Ke?"
Chen Ku's pounce landed on Ke Yansheng's palm. Master Ke grasped it firmly. Chen Ku felt his Force Power dissipate as if it were a clay ox entering the sea, countered by a surge of Qi Power. Inner Qi... Is this Inner Qi?
Ke Yansheng glared sternly at Chen Ku. "You reckless fool! Among fellow Disciples, you should know when to stop! Did you really intend to fight to the death?"
"Master Ke..." Chen Ku began.
Jiang Shaoyou also spoke softly, "It's my fault, Master Ke. There's no need to blame Junior Brother Chen." He relaxed his stance, retracting his Divine Intent, and sighed deeply. "I merely wanted to spar with Junior Brother Chen. I didn't expect his prowess to be so surprising, so I couldn't resist testing him further to see just how astonishing he truly is."
Ke Yansheng glared at Jiang Shaoyou. Still testing? You've practically dissected Chen Ku with your tests! The old geezers at Jinshi Academy will come sniffing around once they catch wind of this!
Suspicion flickered in Ke Yansheng's eyes as he looked at Jiang Shaoyou. Could Yang have specifically sent him to probe? Otherwise, why would he single out the Butcher Court's prized prodigy? But he couldn't voice these thoughts; that would be like loudly broadcasting a mere suspicion, which could easily be a misunderstanding.
Ke Yansheng grunted, looking at Jiang Shaoyou, and said, "The Old Ape Hanging Seal looks back; the critical point lies in holding back, in mindful awareness. Just now... you didn't quite grasp its true essence!"
Jiang Shaoyou was startled by the remark. He quickly composed himself and bowed deeply. "Thank you for your guidance, Master Ke."
Then, he smiled at Chen Ku. "Junior Brother Chen, it was my mistake. How about we call it a draw for today?"
Ke Yansheng heard this and glared again. "What draw? Don't talk nonsense! He has only just achieved consolidated Force Power. How could he be a match for you, who has reached the Unity of Intent and Force Realm? Don't inflate his ego!"
Chen Ku hasn't officially become a Disciple yet; nothing is set in stone, Ke Yansheng thought. People fear fame just as pigs fear growing fat. The more renowned one becomes, the more likely they are to be targeted.
Jiang Shaoyou merely smiled at Ke Yansheng's words. Calling it a draw was, of course, his way of being modest. He truly believed that if he had fully executed a move at the Unity of Intent and Force Realm, his chances of winning would have been at least eighty percent; otherwise, the difference in Realms would mean nothing. However, since so many people had witnessed him and Chen Ku fighting on seemingly equal terms, saying it was a draw wasn't problematic.
Chen Ku also felt that Jiang Shaoyou calling it a draw was an overstatement. He hadn't fully received that final technique, yet he had felt an intense spiritual pressure transmitted, invisibly oppressing him. It suggested that if they had truly clashed, the outcome might have been decided in a fleeting, life-or-death instant.
But if I had ambushed him, the outcome of life and death would indeed be uncertain, he mused darkly.
Ke Yansheng, most of all, feared Chen Ku drawing too much attention at this stage. Since the sparring had concluded, he quickly instructed the surrounding crowd to disperse.
However, no matter how much he tried to downplay it, the spectacle of Chen Ku—an Apprentice for only a month—having cultivated Inner Strength and managing to fight on par with the Young Owner of Tongwen House, who was two minor Realms above him, had thoroughly shaken the other Apprentices.
Naturally, word of this also reached the ears of a certain individual at Jinshi Academy who cultivated the Furious Ape Mighty Staff.
"Well done, Little Shang. You've really got some nerve, always beating around the bush, pestering me to teach you a move or two..."
Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Brothel
After returning to Butcher Court with Chen Ku, Ke Yansheng thought, If Elder Yang really tries to snatch him, I'll just sic Elder Shang on him! Good thing Chen Ku didn't use his Stick Technique today. This really shows Elder Shang's foresight. Otherwise, if we'd given him the Thousand-Jun Stick a month early and taught him the basics, what a mess that would have been. Anyway, it's better if Chen Ku skips these pointless monthly exams in the future. A great student is like a prize cabbage; you're reluctant to pick it yourself, terrified another school will come and snatch it.
「Within Jinshi Academy.」
A tall and sturdy old man, his hands hanging naturally at his sides, stood before a nine-foot-long, gilded staff, chuckling as he scolded, "Shang Yunfang, oh Shang Yunfang, you old fox, you shameless rascal! It's just a move or two, isn't it? Hiding it from me like this, are you afraid I'll snatch that boy away? Am I really that despicable?!"
Shang Yunfang stood not far from this Elder Yang, drawing on his tobacco pipe, his eyes averted. "Hard to say."
This old buddy of his, known as 'North Yang' throughout Baojiao County—a counterpart to 'South Li' of the Fish and Dragon Association—was an anchor of his respective establishment. In terms of Cultivation, he had reached the threshold of "Muscle Transforming" long ago, a solid realm and a half higher than Shang's own. He was also older and, furthermore, had cultivated the first nine stances of the "Furious Ape Mighty Staff" to the Perfection Realm. All these factors combined made him the undisputed face of Medicine King Hall.
Provided, of course...
If only he were a bit more honest in his dealings and not so shameless, it would be even better.
"Shorty... you truly underestimate me, Yang Luochen. Ever since I took on that sole disciple, our bond has deepened. Passing on my legacy to one person is enough; I won't covet anyone else."
Yang Lin, courtesy name Luochen, was a native of Yanmen Fort village in Baojiao County. In his early years, he had "sold coal," "worked as a cook," and "run a grain stall." Eventually, by a twist of fate, he joined the Chen Family Town branch of Medicine King Hall. Coincidentally, a Grandmaster from the previous generation of Jinshi Academy was teaching in Chen Family Town at the time and took the old man on as an Apprentice. After numerous trials, even that Grandmaster hadn't anticipated that he would forge for Medicine King Hall a "Heaven-reaching White Jade Pillar, and a beam that supports the sea."
Aside from his rather poor reputation, it could be said that in terms of Martial Arts, he was second to only one person in Baojiao County.
Yet, regarding Yang Lin's chest-thumping guarantee, Shang Yunfang still had only two words: "Hard to say."
"Believe it or not, I've said I'm not taking any more disciples, and I mean it! You can set your mind at ease!"
"Then let's discuss something else... A group has been poaching our business lately. Although they're still operating in the countryside, they've already started to undermine the foundations of Medicine King Hall."
"Tell me more."
"That group is treating illnesses for free."
"Hmm? For free?"
Upon returning to Butcher Court, Chen Ku began pondering the Fundamental Diagram.
Today's exchange with Jiang Shaoyou gave me quite a few insights...
He mentally reviewed their sparring match.
First, there was Jiang Shaoyou's 'Unity of Move and Force.' Each move contained a special Force Power, jerking and pulling like a drill bit.
Chen Ku held the Bone-chopping Sharp blade, mimicking the movements.
Master Ke said that the Rolling Blade Force in the bone-chopping butcher blade is similar. The key is how to integrate this Force Power into the moves, or embed it into the body so it can be unleashed at any time.
Having been "fed" Force Power by Ke Yansheng long ago, Chen Ku already had an advantage over others in mastering the Rolling Blade Force.
The Skyward Strike also contains a Secretly Transmitted Force Power, a kind of 'Absorbing Force' that can draw in air currents from the surroundings. There's a method to unleash it, but mastering it requires painstaking practice.
Chen Ku closed his eyes, slowly contemplating.
But the prerequisite is that I need a suitable staff before I can use it.
When the workday ended, Chen Ku made a trip to the black market, selling the medicinal herbs, Tiger Bone, and the Ox Horn Shoot he had accumulated.
He received One Hundred and Sixty Taels.
「Late the next night, after work.」
Chen Ku planned to visit the Firewood Iron Shop. After all, every day without a weapon meant another day's delay in his cultivation. Bleeding some money was acceptable, as it was an investment in himself.
Unexpectedly, as soon as he stepped out of Medicine King Hall's main gate, he encountered Jiang Shaoyou.
"Junior Brother Chen? Heading out?" Jiang Shaoyou proactively approached with a smile. "How's your leg? After taking that sneak kick from you, mine is still a bit sore, you know."
Chen Ku's leg wasn't sore. It wasn't due to a superior Physique, but because he had Tiger's Head Ginseng to aid his recovery. A minor bruise, combined with the medicinal effects and his Force Power, had healed in half a night.
However, he had to admit that after these two encounters with Jiang Shaoyou, his impression of the Junior Pavilion Master had improved considerably. Despite his prominent background, he wasn't arrogant and possessed a generous spirit.
He returned a polite smile and said, "Yes, I'm planning to purchase a suitable weapon."
"A weapon?"
Jiang Shaoyou's expression shifted to one of understanding, and he chuckled. "Indeed. With Junior Brother Chen's Innate Divine Strength, ordinary sticks and weapons probably couldn't withstand your usage."
Since the other party had raised the subject, Chen Ku decided to ask a few more questions. After all, Jiang Shaoyou belonged to a prominent family and faction in Baojiao County and was likely more knowledgeable in certain areas.
"Hmm, Senior Brother Jiang, do you happen to know which Firewood Iron Shop has better quality weapons?"
"Firewood Iron Shop, you say? It's indeed a good place to buy weapons." Jiang Shaoyou paused mid-sentence, then suddenly smiled at Chen Ku. "However, if you truly desire a suitable weapon, I know another way, one that won't cost you any money. Interested?"
"Won't cost money?" Chen Ku immediately grew cautious.
Things that don't cost money are often the most expensive.
Seeing Chen Ku's expression, Jiang Shaoyou laughed. "Relax, you don't have to do anything untoward. I have a friend hosting a gathering. He's the descendant of a Martial Arts Scholar, and we respectfully call him 'Official Chai.' He greatly enjoys making friends, especially with like-minded and capable young individuals. He gathers heroes from all over the county, often hosting thirty to fifty of them at his residence. If he admires someone, he gifts them weapons or gold. I myself received a treasured sword from him."
"Descendant of a Martial Arts Scholar?" Chen Ku was surprised.
A Military Scholar holds a Ninth Rank Official Title. A Martial Arts Scholar, however, holds a Seventh Rank Official Title. To be called 'Official Chai,' he must be on par with the Baojiao County Magistrate!
"It's due to his ancestors' merits. But even so, that fortune has blessed three or four generations. In his generation, there are family members who have also become Military Scholars," Jiang Shaoyou explained with a smile. "So, what do you think? If you're interested, the banquet is tonight. Shall I take you?"
Chen Ku pondered for a moment.
Could this be an opportunity to glimpse a higher social circle? Say what you will, the Junior Pavilion Master of Tongwen House and the descendant of a Martial Arts Scholar are definitely second-generation elites. In any world, social circles determine one's level. Information casually exchanged within certain tiers, if leaked, could be enough to alter the lives and destinies of those outside. Perhaps... interacting with such a high-level circle could provide me with some information, leading to an easier way to earn money?
Taking a deep breath, he said, "Then I'll have to trouble Senior Brother to take me to broaden my horizons."
"Excellent! Rest assured, no one there will look down on you. Capable people are respected everywhere," Jiang Shaoyou said. "We'll meet at the 'Fragrance Pavilion' in the county in two hours."
"Fragrance Pavilion?"
"A place for enjoying music and performances."
"Ah, alright."
Chapter 57: Chapter 57 Ballad
The West City District of Baojiao County was a place of entertainment and prosperity, with taverns, tea gardens, cuju fields, chess clubs, opera gardens, and brothels.
If the Inner City was a relatively affluent area where only the wealthy could afford to live, then all who resided there possessed considerable family wealth.
Thus, those who could afford to enjoy the wealth and luxury of the West City District were truly the rich and carefree elites from the Inner City's most exclusive circles.
They need not worry about their livelihood and spent their days contemplating how to enjoy life to the fullest, thanks to the foundation laid by their ancestors for generations.
Their forebears had endured all hardships so that the younger generation could lavishly spend and scatter money without fear of depleting their wealth, even if they lay on mountains of gold and silver.
Fragrance Pavilion was the most extravagant place within Baojiao County.
Chen Ku, whether in his past life or this one, was visiting such a high-class establishment for the first time. Without a doubt, every seat here would cost an ordinary person several years' worth of farming income.
The long robe of Medicine King Hall, which held a prominent status in the outer city and countryside, could not garner a second glance from the guards at the entrance of the brothel here.
Fortunately, Chen Ku had someone send word ahead of time.
Soon after, Jiang Shaoyou personally came out to greet him.
"Junior Brother Chen, I was afraid you wouldn't come."
"Am I late?" Chen Ku cupped his hands in greeting and asked, "Did I delay anything?"
"You, late? You're early! When it comes to these gatherings, hardly anyone arrives on time." As Jiang Shaoyou spoke, he ushered Chen Ku inside, saying, "Let's go in and sit first, and then in a bit, I'll introduce you to the others."
Upon entering this place of luxury, it wasn't as greasy and cosmetic-perfumed as Chen Ku had imagined. Instead, it had a refreshing fragrance, like sandalwood, with a hint of scholarly air. The singing and dancing were not overly noisy, but rather elegant.
They headed to the second floor, to a large private room.
"This must be Brother Chen Ku of Medicine King Hall, right? Shaoyou has been talking about you all day, about how you gave him quite the trouble."
As they entered, a man in his thirties dressed in silk, with an average face but clean, white teeth, and an aristocratic demeanor, stood up with a cup of wine and approached, saying, "I am Chai Tiangui. Come, come, Brother Chen Ku, let's start with a cup of wine."
"I dare not claim the credit. It was entirely Senior Brother Jiang's mercy today." Having chosen to come to this place, Chen Ku didn't put on airs of superiority. He took the cup of wine and drank it in one gulp, saying, "Chen is fortunate to have met Brother Chai."
"Refreshing!" Chai Tiangui watched Chen Ku drink without hesitation, his eyes lighting up with appreciation. "You're indeed someone recommended by Shaoyou, full of passionate energy. I've heard Brother Chen lacks a suitable weapon. If you don't mind, I'm willing to gift you one. I just don't know what kind of weapon you prefer or how heavy it should be?"
Chen Ku was inwardly moved by the gesture. This was no petty Official Chai, but truly a magnanimous Official Chai, just as Jiang Shaoyou had accurately described. No wonder his praise of him was so high. Chen then shamelessly said, "Then I will accept Brother Chai's kindness. I have no special requirements—just a staff, preferably one that weighs around a thousand pounds or more!"
"A thousand pounds or more? To wield something so heavy!"
Chai Tiangui was initially taken aback, then laughed heartily. "Indeed, heroes emerge from the young. Alright, I look forward to quickly having this weapon forged and delivered to you, Brother.
"I can't wait to see the scene when your enemies face a thousand-pound strike. Just picturing that scene makes me, Chai, feel honored."
"Many thanks, Brother Chai!" Chen Ku bowed his hands in gratitude, admiring Chai Tiangui's character. It wasn't because he felt like a swift horse meeting his Bole, but he truly respected Chai Tiangui's straightforward way of living.
After Chai Tiangui shared a few drinks with him, several more guests arrived soon after. Chai Tiangui treated everyone with the same grace and hospitality, even casually gifting One Hundred Taels of silver to one of them.
No matter how Chen Ku looked at it, it seemed that aside from Chai's sociable nature, he found a particular pleasure in spending money.
Jiang Shaoyou whispered to Chen Ku with a smile, "Incredible, isn't it? But, in time, you will understand. In this world, life revolves around fame and fortune. Sometimes money isn't the most important thing, especially for the wealthy. Most of the time, respect from others is what's hardest to acquire. Yet, Brother Chai only needs to distribute what he has in abundance to win this hardest-to-come-by respect, and it comes from the heart."
Respect from others, huh...
Chen Ku pondered these words for a moment. He then looked at Chai Tiangui with newfound respect, admiring his clear grasp on life.
Just then, a voice suddenly came from outside:
"The son of County Deputy Qi, Young Master Qi Renwang, has arrived!"
The son of County Deputy Qi! Chen Ku couldn't help but turn his attention in that direction. The County Deputy was the second in command of the entire county.
Shortly after, more announcements followed:
"Miss Shen from Registrar Shen's family has arrived!"
"Third Young Master Zhou from Langui Fang has arrived!"
"Scholar Zhang has arrived!"
One after another, sons and daughters from major households, along with scholars of renowned fame, all made their way to the second floor of the Fragrance Pavilion.
Chen Ku looked at these people—whether they were daughters of the government Yamen or sons of famous merchants—and couldn't help but sigh to himself, The elders behind these people are the ones who truly stand at the very top of the pyramid of power behind the scenes in Baojiao County, right? It really proves that saying... Everyone who comes here is somebody of status.
Compared to them, his previous identities as a freelance tradesman and a long-gowned shop assistant made him feel like a mere commoner.
And yet he had managed to blend in.
Chen Ku observed that everyone here appeared to be interacting with each other as equals.
This continued until an announcement came: "The daughter of Counselor Sui, Sui Qingfang, has arrived!"
Chen Ku saw that everyone present stood up, and he too was forced to rise and join them in welcoming her at the entrance.
Chen Ku was curious. The daughter of a Counselor was actually more prestigious than the son of a County Deputy?
Some of the other guests who had been invited were quietly asking their companions the same question. With his sharp hearing, like that of Skinny Dog, Chen Ku heard it all very clearly.
"Why is the daughter of a Counselor so highly esteemed?"
"Brother, you're not from around here, are you?"
"Yes, I was recommended by Brother Zhang to pay a visit to Official Chai. I'm not very familiar with local matters, so I would be grateful if you could enlighten me, brother."
"That makes sense. Of course, it has to do with a folk rhyme from our Baojiao County. If you ask who's the master of Baojiao..."
"Eh? What do you mean?"
Chen Ku looked discreetly at the speaker, a young man with clear eyes and a bright smile, who began to explain:
"It goes: 'No rival in Shangguan's town... North Yang, South Li, Thirteenth Young Master... Counselor, Sharp Blade, Dragon, Tiger, Leopard... When the Long Spear is unsheathed, all else falls away.'"
"What does this rhyme mean? It seems to refer to ten people?"
The young man said, "Indeed, it refers to the ten strongest martial artists in the county. The 'Counselor' mentioned is our very own Counselor of the Baojiao County Yamen, 'Sui You.' Moreover, the rhyme ranks them according to their martial prowess. So, it's not just any Counselor's daughter who has come, but rather the daughter of the fifth strongest martial artist in Baojiao County..."
He drew a sharp breath. "If that's the case, then 'No rival in Shangguan's town' means..."
A thought struck Chen Ku as he heard this. Shangguan? If he remembered correctly, the County Magistrate of Baojiao County had the surname Shangguan...
"That's right, 'Shangguan' refers to the Lord County Magistrate. An externally appointed County Magistrate, yet in just a mere five years, he has managed to govern Baojiao County impeccably. Do you really think it's because of the official seal? No! It's because of martial power!"
The number one martial artist in Baojiao County was none other than the County Magistrate. Chen Ku's heart stirred.
In the Daji Dynasty, which emphasized martial prowess over scholarly aptitude, this seemed all too fitting.
After all, the preference for scholars over martial artists typically stemmed from the idea that scholars could more effectively serve the Imperial Court and stabilize its rule. However, if martial artists' power became overwhelming, allowing them to reach the peak of their cultivation and become true champions capable of defeating thousands, then a societal shift towards valuing martial artists to maintain stability would be inevitable.
"So North Yang, South Li, and Thirteenth Young Master are the second, third, and fourth strongest, correct?"
"Yes, each of these three represents one of the county's three great powers. Medicine King Hall is in the north, the Fish and Dragon Association is in the south, and the remaining one, Thirteenth Young Master, is Xie Qingfeng of the Xie Family from the Firewood Iron Shop."
Chen Ku listened, deeply moved. Medicine King Hall? North Yang? The one who cultivated the Furious Ape Mighty Staff at Jinshi Academy is actually the second strongest martial artist in Baojiao, right beneath County Magistrate Shangguan...
Chapter 58: Chapter 58 Intelligence
Chen Ku listened as the person beside him listed the ten top experts of Baojiao County. Among these ten, the Imperial Court surprisingly accounted for three: the unmatched County Magistrate Shangguan, followed by Counselor Sui You and Sharp Blade. That Sharp Blade—the 'sharp' in his name signified not only the speed of his blade but also his position as chief of constables.
But what Chen Ku hadn't expected was that among the ten top experts, Medicine King Hall actually had two. One was the senior from North Yang, Yang Luochen. The other was Chai Bao, the instructor from the Dragon Tiger Leopard. Chen Ku had met Chai Bao before. Although Chen Ku hadn't encountered Senior Yang Luochen in the hall, he guessed his Skyward Strike most likely originated from this second-ranked expert in the county.
"Miss Sui has arrived! The banquet can begin now," Chai Tiangui announced excitedly, ushering everyone to their seats.
Soon, on the second floor of the Fragrance Pavilion, behind a huge screen carved with exquisite openwork patterns, a large round table was fully occupied by eighteen people. At the head of the table sat none other than the Counselor's daughter, Sui Qingfang. Around eighteen or nineteen years old, she was the center of attention. To her left was the host, Chai Tiangui, and to her right was the son of County Assistant Qi. Ranged on either side were the Registrar's daughter, Scholar Zhang, Jiang Shaoyou from Tongwen House, Third Young Master Zhou from Langui Fang, and others. This constituted the upper half of the table. The lower half was for people like Chen Ku, who had been invited through recommendation. At this single table, status, hierarchy, and social circles were clearly demarcated by seating arrangement.
"It's a fortunate fate that has brought us all together today," Chai Tiangui stood up and said. "I propose we first toast Miss Sui, because just two days ago, she officially reached the Inner Qi Realm!"
He continued, "Let us congratulate Miss Sui together for reaching Inner Qi! At eighteen years of age, the title of Military Scholar in next spring's martial arts examination will be well within her grasp."
As Chai Tiangui spoke, everyone else, including Chen Ku, naturally stood up, raising their glasses to the young woman in the orchid-patterned long gown, whose appearance was pure and graceful. Sui Qingfang maintained the demeanor of a well-bred young lady. Though she showed no outward signs of martial training, her achievement surprised all those who had been recommended. Eighteen years old, Inner Qi. While her father's influence was a factor, among the hundred thousand households of Baojiao County, someone with such natural talent and diligence could truly be considered one in ten thousand.
"The martial arts examination itself isn't much," Sui Qingfang spoke with gentle composure, a radiant presence at the banquet. "Those present, like Brother Jiang Shaoyou, Brother Qi, and Third Young Master Zhou, will also reach this level by next year or the year after at the latest. The difficult part is winning the favor of a sitting master at the time. I heard that next spring's martial arts examination will have a major figure from the Prefecture Yamen overseeing it. There's a rumor it might be Grandmaster Jin Chui, 'Whose Steeds Trample Three Prefectures and Eight Counties, Whose Hammer Shakes Both Banks of the Dragon River'."
"Grandmaster Jin Chui?" Qi Renwang seemed to have heard of him, turned to Jiang Shaoyou, and whispered, "Is that the legendary figure born with Divine Power, who killed the rebel leader Wang Keyong with one hammer blow, defeated the Master of Qinggang Sect with two, and smashed the gates of Supreme Fortress with three—the Patriarch of the Qin Family, Qin Yuxian?"
He added, "It is said that this Patriarch of the Qin Family is also the president of the Qiu Dragon Martial Meeting, which shelters thirty-six forces, large and small. It's even rumored that one of the owners behind Medicine King Hall is among those thirty-six forces."
Jiang Shaoyou remained noncommittal, simply arching an eyebrow and asking, "Such a significant figure deigning to come to a place like Baojiao County? What connection does the martial arts examination have to him?"
"Indeed, it has nothing to do with him directly," Sui Qingfang said slowly. "However, you should have heard that Grandmaster Jin Chui has a good relationship with a young reformist official from You State and is influenced by that young official's ideas. Recently, news has also spread that the grandees in the Imperial Court's cabinet are discussing a 'tax reform' initiative. This initiative advocates that officials and gentry be treated as one, performing official duties and paying grain taxes..."
Qi Renwang's eyebrows twitched. "How can that be possible! That could shake the foundations of the empire! It's simply unfeasible."
"Therefore, it's said that the young official from Qiu Dragon Mansion will be chosen to pilot the initiative in one county, acting as an imperial envoy," Sui Qingfang explained.
"Could it be Baojiao County they've chosen?!" The second-generation scions present all grew tense.
"It's just a rumor, not yet confirmed. But if it's true, Grandmaster Jin Chui's arrival must be to act as a protector for this young official," Sui Qingfang said. "This matter is too significant for us to ponder. If it truly comes to pass, a small place like Baojiao County won't be able to resist."
The son of County Assistant Qi pondered and said, "A single family or household certainly cannot resist. But if everyone, from top to bottom, unites, resistance might not be futile."
Sui Qingfang said, "Let's not dwell on this. Rumors shouldn't be taken as truth. However, if it were true, it would indeed be detrimental to our family interests. Yet, for me, it might not be a bad thing. If I could have Senior Qin as my sitting master, I could venture into a much wider world."
All the young people present were intelligent. If things truly transpired that way, it would be like putting their eggs in two baskets. Unfortunately, among them, only Jiang Shaoyou had a chance to meet the criteria—under twenty and at the Inner Qi Realm or above—by next spring to participate in the Military Scholar examination.
Chen Ku, seated at the far end of the lower table, listened to these secrets. The Military Scholar examination next spring? Could I possibly cultivate to the Inner Qi Realm by then?
If I could...
Afterward, the topics of conversation at the table shifted continuously, each one something the lower strata of Baojiao County would never encounter in their lifetimes. While the young masters and misses chatted excitedly, Chen Ku and the others at the lower table listened quietly to the affairs of the upper echelons, all while savoring the fine food.
During this time, he overheard many fresh local anecdotes and pieces of intelligence. For instance, symptoms resembling typhoid had recently been spreading on a small scale in the remote towns and villages of Baojiao County. A herb called 'stiff silkworm' was said to cure this illness. Those with foresight could stock up on it in advance and resell it for a substantial profit. Secondly, during this typhoid outbreak, some people claiming to be from the Peace Path had been treating the sick for free with talisman water, significantly encroaching on Medicine King Hall's business. The young masters and misses suspected this typhoid outbreak was orchestrated by that group from the Peace Path.
The final piece of news concerned a creature known as a 'bait mouse.' It was said to have an Immune to All Poisons physique; no matter what poison it ingested, it could slowly neutralize it within a day. Eating the flesh of this creature reportedly had the same effect, capable of curing general illnesses and poisons. It was said that many Pharmacists from Medicine King Hall also used this creature in their medicinal preparations and Alchemy to test for potion toxicity.
"I always feel there's a powerful backer and a conspiracy behind that Peace Path group. It would be best if everyone tried to acquire a bait mouse. Then, if that Peace Path group concocts some new disease, we won't have to worry too much."
"This bait mouse grows near Two Realms Mountain, but it's not easy to obtain. After all, a single misstep could mean crossing the border, and even Hunter's Forest doesn't accept such border-related commissions..."
"Sigh, indeed. A bait mouse from Medicine King Hall costs two or three hundred taels. They only have two or three, never lend them out, and have been raising them for several years. They're treasured immensely."
Chen Ku sipped his tea and savored the food, his mind stirring as he listened to their conversation. Bait mouse, Two Realms Mountain, ordinary people can't cross the border... But Skinny Dog and the tiger are certainly not ordinary. This gathering wasn't a waste of time after all; I've obtained a good deal of useful information and intelligence.
Finally, the banquet concluded.
Chen Ku and the others were the first to leave the Fragrance Pavilion. He saw County Assistant Qi's son, Qi Renwang, and Sui Qingfang saying something to Chai Tiangui. He perked up his Skinny Dog-like ears and faintly overheard a sentence:
"From now on, let's only hold small gatherings. There were too many miscellaneous people this time. When we talk, they can't join in. Leaving them out like that makes them feel awkward, which isn't good for anyone..."
Chai Tiangui, Jiang Shaoyou, and a few others offered apologetic smiles and laughed it off.
Chen Ku shook his head with a smile and departed. Although Jiang Shaoyou had put it nicely, we were still looked down upon. Not just me, but everyone else seated in the lower section today. One can't really blame them. After all, we couldn't join their conversations and could only listen silently... I fared better; at least I obtained some information and have the ability to capitalize on it. The others were merely there as background.
