Chapter 45 - Forgotten Shore: Day: 204 "A Call from the Other Side"

[You have lost memory: Starlight Shard](Effie)

[You have lost memory: Blood Arrow](Kai)

Keter walked through the bustling castle halls towards a door at the very end of the hall. With swift steps, Keter reached the door and opened it, completely disregarding the lock. "Cassie, what did you see?" Keter asked as he noticed Cassie editing the Record of our salvation.

Cassie didn't stop writing, but it was obvious just how bad it was with how hard she was gripping the feather. "I- I-" Cassie stopped trying to speak as she began to shake violently. Keter quickly came up behind her to give her a comforting hand. The feather dropped as the ink stained the page, as she accidentally knocked over its container. Cassie's hands bleed as Keter stopped her from clawing at her chest.

"I-I I saw myself DIE!" Cassie screamed as she thrashed. "I watched as my neck was slit by a shadow! I watched as my stomach burst and my organs fell out as a woman sat on a throne and watched! I watched myself being devoured by a flood of beasts! I watched myself crash and burn in a flying ship! !-"Tears begin to fall from Cassie's eyes as she lists the hundreds, if not thousands, of times she watched herself die. Keter acted as a quiet support to her, something to anchor her to the present.

It was only do to her incredible mental fortitude that she was able to pull herself together in less than an hour. But her tears still stained her cheeks, her voice still hoarse from her crying.

"Keter I-I think I now know what he is," Cassie spoke, still leaning on Keter's shoulders.

"He? Who is he?" Keter asked.

"The unknown divinity. The one whose divinity marks my very soul, the one who acts as some sort of specter." Cassie said.

Keter looked at her as she rested on his shoulder. A suspicion raised in his heart. " You won't be able to explain it, will you? Like most of your visions."

Cassie nodded and opened her mouth to speak. "No, but I need a favor from you, it's the only way."

Keter nodded as he thought. "What is it? Whatever it is, it will be done."

Cassie then spoke, her voice filled with new conviction. "I need you to kill me."

---------------

Keter whipped off some of the blood on his face with the back of his hand. Keter summoned his memory, [Staby Dagger], and slowly pressed it into the space between the creature's carapace shell and its stomach. Keter shoved a few of his fingers so the gap wouldn't close back up as he dragged the [Staby Dagger] down through its membrane, slowly separating the carapace from the meat.

"Fucking hell, Keter! Are you going to be having us scoping horse shit next?" Effie said, outraged at having been made to turn some of the poisonous centipedes into edible meat. A far more delicate work than what most others were doing.

"No, there are no horses within the Forgotten Shore," Keter said as he began to scope out the organs of the scavenger with his bare hands. "But if you are so passionate about it, then I can delay our journey so you can get some relief."

Effie froze for a moment, then screamed. "LIKE HELL! Why would I ever want that?! AND RELIEF?"

Keter put his fingers against his chin as he thought. "Sorry, I should not give false promises. The sea will take away the shit before you get a chance to scoop it." Keter said far too seriously.

Effie looked at him with horror and confusion, as if the question of him was serious.

Gunlang then said annyoned. "Can you both stop talking about shit already? Huh? Its startn to really piss me off!"

Caster stared at Keter in abject horror as he questioned everything he knew about the man in front of him.

Keter ignored Caster's gaze as he tossed the now empty corpse of the scavenger off the clif, and tossed the meat into the underground oven to cook later. Keter then said rather dismissively "Get working already we have over 700 mouths to feed. Someone is going to to starve if we don't get this done."

Effie looked at Keter, enraged. "YOU FUC- Damn it, why am I falling for your damn rage bait!" Effie chomped down on the centipede in the most annoyed form anyone could do so. Effie ignored the fact that she had already eaten her share of supplies for the day, as she asked a little less annoyed. "Why the hell did we split up into three separate teams again?"

"It's about to be seven," Keter said as he grabbed another scavenger corpse and began stripping it of its meat.

"Seven? If we do that, at minimum one of us is going to be ravaged by this damn labyrinth. Hell, seven is the amount of elite combatants that we have. Gemma and Tessai are almost elites, but that's not enough to have the strength to overcome the labyrinth. Separating us into seven teams is a death march that depends entirely on luck." Effie said in a surprising moment of intelligence.

Gunlang looked over at Effie with a questioning look. "She is right for the most part, surprisingly. So why don't you explain yourself, Keter? You got a better reason than wanting to get us all killed, don't you?" Gunlang's sarcasm was evident.

Effie looked back, irritated. "Do you all think I'm some fucking idiot or what!" Nobody dignified her words with a response.

Keter's gaze didn't leave the scavenger as he began to explain. "We don't have to food needed, nor can we get it fast enough to feed the entire army, unless we split up. Of course, the teams have been highly optimized to deal with our limited number of elites. Along with the fact that recently Cassie got a memory named [Whispers of the Deep], which will allow her to warn each part before a major disaster."

"Even if we have Cassie's help and the teams are optimized, we are going to lose a fuck ton of people. Hundreds are going to die within the labyrinth if we split that much." Effie Remarked.

"That's the point, you foolish brute," Gunlang said, agitated. "He is planning the thin the damn herd." Gunlang tisked.

"I'm weeding out the weaker-willed." Keter corrected. "We only need the best of the best for the siege on the spire."

"Caster, are you fucking hearing this? Even if you are from Valor, there has to be a point!" Effie yelled.

Caster looked over, annoyed. "His Highness can do what he wants. I have no right or want to get in his way."

Effie's expression changed to confusion."His Highness? The fuck?"

"His highness Keter is a prince of both Valor and Song. Why else would a princess of Song look at him like she does, or why would a servant of Valor follow his every order?"
