Chapter 61 - No pay

Rion entered the huge guild, and upon stepping inside, he was even more taken aback than when he first saw the city—it was truly something else. When he had entered the grand city, he expected it to be impressive, but a guild? He'd been in two before, and they paled in comparison. This place had three floors, all open to see from below, each teeming with adventurers eating, drinking, and laughing.

In the middle of the building was the receptionist desk, as usual, but it was massive. Multiple attendants at different terminals were attending to people's needs. Rion's eyes darted around the place until they landed on the quest board. In addition to the usual tablets, they also had a physical board here. Dozens and dozens of papers were pinned up, each listing different quests. Some had gorgeously drawn illustrations, others less so, but Rion found them amazing all the same.

He ran over to the quest board and began his search, furrowing his brow. "I need a quest that'll give me a lot of experience," Rion muttered to himself.

Many of the quests plastered across the board were too advanced for Rion, plentily of Demon exterminations which you needed a class 1 for. There were also plently menial tasking like, finding lost chickens (shouldn't it be cats?), coming over to an elderly woman's house to… do her laundry? (Should this really be on the quest board?) Rion eventually shook his head, calming himself. "I mustn't judge… we all have our—" he paused at the next paper.

I'm just bored, haha!

In a rage, Rion ripped that one from the board, revealing another hidden quest. He gasped. The piece of paper had a gorgeous drawing of a deep valley colored in hues of orange and magenta. Centered in the middle of the drawing were hands formed in prayer. Below it were words that read:

"I cannot promise much as a reward, but I beg for your help. Anyone will do, please. I'm waiting in the back of the first floor of the guild. This is what I look like."

Beside the words was a small drawing of a guy with tan skin, long dark hair, a maroon tunic, and a fashionable hat.

Rion felt his hands begin to quiver, and a big grin spread across his face. This was it. The drawing, the cryptic wording, this was the quest he had to take!

He turned and made his way toward the back of the guild. After weaving through the crowd and bumping into one armored man too many, Rion reached the back of the guild. He scanned the area twice but saw no sign of the quest giver. He was just about to look somewhere else when he spotted a feathered hat resting on a table.

In fact, the quest giver's whole head was resting on the table. His shoulders were gently shaking and… was he crying!?

Rion quickly made his way over and carefully rested his hand on the man's shoulder. The quest giver shot up and shouted, "AH!"

Rion jolted back as their eyes met. The man's face was a mess, his eyes were red and puffy, snot clung beneath his nose, and there was a large red mark on his forehead. How long had he been lying there crying? Rion wondered.

The quest giver finally spoke, "Who… sniff… are… you…?"

(And thus, Rion's adventure continues…)
