What exactly was the Ho-Oh Championship Battle?
According to legend, Ho-Oh had left Ecruteak City in search of someone with a pure heart.
The Ho-Oh Championship Battle was Ecruteak City's method of finding that pure-hearted individual.
The specific format was simple: battle!
Very fitting. This was very Pokemon.
Everything could be resolved through Pokemon battles.
However, John suspected this was mostly just Ecruteak City creating a spectacle for the Ho-Oh Festival. After all, this wasn't the first Ho-Oh Festival. If every year's championship winner was supposedly "pure of heart," then why the hell hadn't Ho-Oh returned yet?
"Five, six, seven participants!"
Sakura's voice rang out across the theater. "This year's Ho-Oh Championship will follow the traditional ring battle format. Only the last trainer standing can be crowned the victor!"
She paused, building anticipation. "We are thrilled to announce that this year's defending champion and ring master is none other than the world-renowned actress and Kalos League Champion, Miss Diantha!"
"Let's give her a warm welcome!"
The audience erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.
"It's Champion Diantha!"
"She's even more beautiful in person!"
Amid the enthusiastic reception, Diantha rose gracefully from her seat, waving to the crowd with practiced ease. She ascended the stage and accepted the microphone from Sakura with a slight bow.
"Thank you all for the warm welcome. I'm honored to serve as this year's defending champion," Diantha said, her voice carrying the polish of someone accustomed to public speaking. "However, I must say I'm not unbeatable. I look forward to facing worthy challengers tonight."
Sakura stepped forward again. "Champion Diantha is far too modest. Her strength is unquestionable, and any trainer who wishes to challenge her will need to bring their absolute best!"
She gestured toward a display case being wheeled onto the stage. "Additionally, this year's prize for the victor is an extremely rare item. I call it the Clear Bell."
The case opened, revealing a translucent bell that seemed to shimmer with an inner light.
"This is an almost perfectly transparent bell with remarkable healing properties. When its sound is used in conjunction with healing moves, the healing effects are dramatically enhanced!"
The audience below gasped and murmured with excitement.
"Hold on, we don't even need to use our ace Pokemon, and it's a three-on-one format? Even if someone manages to beat a Champion under those conditions, that's already legendary!"
"What are you talking about, beating Champion Diantha? I'd consider it a massive honor just to battle her at all!"
While the crowd buzzed with speculation, John's eyes never left the Clear Bell after Sakura lifted it for display.
Although the bell didn't have visible stat properties like in the game, based on its appearance alone, John was certain, this was exactly the Clear Bell he needed to access the tenth floor of the Bell Tower.
"Talk about perfect timing..." John murmured.
For the trainers who'd be challenging Diantha, this revelation was undoubtedly a crushing blow to their confidence.
"Champion Diantha is that strong? I don't see any hope of winning at all..."
"Maybe we should just forfeit..."
But one voice cut through the nervous chatter.
"I'll go first."
Blue stood up, already holding a Pokeball in his hand. He walked toward the stage with unhurried confidence, his expression calm and focused.
"I'm Blue, from Kanto," he announced simply, tossing his Pokeball into the air.
Red light burst forth, materializing into a massive, drill-armed Pokemon, Rhyperior.
John's eyes immediately focused on the information hovering above the Rock and Ground-type's head.
[Rhyperior LV95]
Unlike the anime version where Blue had been defeated by Red and subsequently gave up battling to become a Pokemon researcher, this Blue had never abandoned his dream. His goal remained singular and unwavering: to become the greatest trainer in the world.
That obsessive drive was precisely why Blue and Red had spent years as rivals, locked in what could only be described as a "love-hate relationship" that pushed both of them to incredible heights.
John leaned forward slightly in his seat, interest piqued. This was going to be good.
Diantha smiled, a glint of excitement in her eyes as she pulled out her own Pokeball. "A Rhyperior? You certainly came prepared, Blue. Very well, let me show you what a Champion's strength truly means."
She released her Pokemon in a flash of light.
"Gardevoir, you're up!"
The Psychic and Fairy-type materialized on stage, its elegant form a stark contrast to Rhyperior's brutish appearance.
[Gardevoir LV96]
The level advantage was minimal, but John knew levels weren't everything. Type matchups, move sets, held items, and pure tactical skill could easily overcome a one-level difference.
"Rhyperior, Rock Wrecker!" Blue commanded without hesitation.
The massive Pokemon roared, condensing stone energy into a devastating projectile. The boulder shot forward like a cannon blast, the sheer force creating a shockwave that rippled across the stage.
"Teleport," Diantha said calmly.
Gardevoir vanished an instant before impact, the Rock Wrecker smashing harmlessly into the reinforced stage floor and leaving a crater.
Gardevoir reappeared behind Rhyperior, already charging its next move.
"Moonblast!"
Fairy energy gathered into a radiant sphere, the super-effective attack glowing with destructive power.
"Protect!" Blue countered.
A translucent barrier materialized around Rhyperior just before the Moonblast connected. The attack detonated against the shield in a brilliant explosion of pink light, but when the glow faded, Rhyperior stood unharmed.
The crowd watched in stunned silence. This wasn't the one-sided demolition they'd expected.
John smiled slightly. Blue was clearly in this to win.
This Ho-Oh Championship Battle was going to be far more interesting than anyone anticipated.
