Chapter 517 - Chapter 516

Every breath steamed, every drop of rain hissed against the blackened soil. The jungle was a cathedral of ash and coral bones, its silence broken only by the hiss of shifting magma and the low pulse of something ancient beneath the surface. Kurai's boots sank into soot with each step, the heat brushing her skin like a living thing.

Skuld followed behind, cautious but curious. "Do you feel that?"

Kurai didn't answer. Her silver eyes flickered as the tremor grew—a rhythm, heavy and deliberate, like footsteps through the heart of the earth.

The air rippled. A shadow moved among the trees.

A shape emerged from the fog—broad, scarred, carrying nothing but a weary smirk and empty hands. Tattoos glowed faintly blue across his chest, rippling with each flex of muscle.

"Well," the demigod said, voice half a laugh, half a warning. "I didn't expect visitors on this little island of corpses."

"You must be Maui," Skuld whispered.

The demigod grinned wider. "At your service—minus the service part."

Kurai's hand found her keyblade. "You don't have your fishhook."

Maui's eyes narrowed. "You know about that?"

"Well, this will be boring. Let's hurry this up."

Her weapon sang into existence—black and silver steel lined with moving shadows, its edge serrated like the grin of a predator. Maui's stance tightened, but she was already moving.

Kurai blurred forward, vanishing into a streak of black mist. Umbral Step. She reappeared at Maui's flank, swinging her keyblade in a sharp diagonal arc. Maui caught the blow barehanded, muscles bulging, sparks flying where divine skin met cursed steel.

"Strong," he grunted, twisting her wrist aside. "But I've fought monsters and gods."

"Really? So have I."

Dark energy burst from her free hand, slamming into his chest like a cannonball. Maui was hurled backward through a tree, his shoulder gouging a furrow in the ash.

He stood, grinning again despite the burn etched across his chest. "Not bad, little girl. But you'll have to do better than that."

Kurai raised a hand. "Gladly."

Dark Thundaga.

Bolts of violet lightning rained from the clouds, striking the ground in chaotic sequence. Maui ducked, rolled, and slammed his palm into the soil—earth buckled upward, shielding him in a shell of molten rock. The strikes hit, exploding into shards of black glass.

When the smoke cleared, he was already charging. He leapt high, driving his fist down like a meteor.

Kurai met him midair.

Their clash sent a shockwave through the crater. The ground split, lava erupting in fountains around them. Kurai twisted, vanishing into shadow just before his fist landed, reappearing behind him with a dark smile.

"Slow."

A wave of magic pulsed from her hand, slowing the demigod's movements. He swung through treacle, every motion dragging like it was underwater. Kurai circled him leisurely, keyblade dragging through the dirt, drawing a burning sigil.

Then she struck.

Nightfall Vortex.

A tornado of shadows erupted, swallowing them both. Blades of darkness tore through the storm, cutting stone, slicing air, hammering Maui from every direction. He roared, swinging blindly, his strength carving craters into the ash—but she was everywhere, every direction, every breath.

He broke free with a desperate slam of his fists, sending a shockwave that shattered the cyclone. Kurai stood on a pillar of shadow above him, untouched. Her hair whipped wildly, her eyes gleaming like stars.

"Without your hook," she said, "you're just a man pretending to be a legend."

Maui's grin returned—feral, teeth bared. "Then let me remind you what this legend can do."

He stomped the ground. The earth answered.

The crater shook, magma bursting upward in a fountain of fire. He seized one molten stream midair, twisting it into a whip of glowing stone. With a spin, he lashed it upward. Kurai dodged—but barely. The whip struck her leg, scorching through her clothes.

Kurai hit the ground, rolling to one knee, the smell of burning fabric filling the air.

He advanced, relentless. Each step shook the ground. He swung the molten whip again—she ducked beneath it, her keyblade scraping through the ash and igniting trails of shadowfire. The moment his weapon passed overhead, she surged upward with Abyssal Severance.

Her strike split the air with a scream. The blade's black light carved through his side, searing divine flesh.

Maui stumbled, blood and molten light dripping from the wound. For the first time, his grin faltered.

Kurai straightened, darkness coiling around her like a living cloak. "You're not a proper god. You're half-baked."

He growled, voice low. "And you—are a mistake."

He charged again, faster this time, fury replacing rhythm. Kurai met him head-on. She slashed, he blocked with his arm; sparks and embers flared. He threw a punch that cratered the ground where she'd stood an instant before, but she dissolved into mist and reappeared above him, keyblade raised.

"Black Hole Chain."

Chains of shadow erupted from the ground, wrapping around his limbs. He strained, muscles bulging, but the darkness pulled tighter, searing like molten iron. Kurai dropped down, pressing her palm to his chest.

"Drain."

Darkness surged. The energy was visible—threads of violet and red light ripping from Maui's body into hers. His roar turned into a strangled gasp as his strength bled away. Her burns healed in real time, her eyes glowing brighter.

He slammed his head forward with brute force, breaking her concentration. The chains shattered; Kurai staggered back.

Maui stood, trembling but grinning again. "You hit like a storm, girl. But storms pass."

"Not this one."

Kurai's keyblade spun in her hand. The shadows thickened until the sky itself dimmed, the storm blotting out the stars. Her voice echoed through the dark.

"Void Dominion."

The entire battlefield vanished into darkness. Only the glow of her eyes remained—a pair of silver comets moving through the black. Maui swung wildly, every strike missing by inches. She appeared behind him, her keyblade tracing a black arc through his back, then vanished again.

Another strike. Then another.

Every hit came from a new direction, faster, heavier, filled with unstoppable rhythm. Maui staggered, his tattoos flickering erratically, divine light faltering beneath the pressure. The shadows around him pulsed in time with his heartbeat.

Finally, Kurai stopped directly in front of him, her blade raised high.

"Dusk's Crescendo."

She brought it down.

The slash exploded in a shockwave of pure shadow, blasting Maui backward through the jungle. The eruption consumed trees, shattered coral, and split the earth. When the light faded, he lay half-buried in the ash, smoke rising from his wounds.

Kurai lowered her weapon, breathing hard but steady. Her hair clung to her face, soaked with sweat and rain.

Maui groaned, trying to sit up. "Guess the ocean was right," he muttered. "It sent me a monster."

Kurai wiped her blade clean. "Really, that's not polite. After I showed you mercy. I could've killed you."

"Yeah?" He spat blood and laughed weakly. "Then what are you waiting for?"

The darkness in her eyes flickered—not softer, but thoughtful. "You still know where it is, don't you? The Heart."

He chuckled through the pain. "And if I do?"

"Then you'll take us there."

Maui tilted his head, studying her. The smirk returned—tired, defiant, but alive. "Fine. You've earned yourself a guide, defeater of the demigod Maui."

Kurai turned away, her keyblade dissolving into black mist. "If you mislead us or waste my time, then I will end you. Or maybe I'll show you more mercy."

He laughed again, low and raspy. "Same thing, where you're concerned."

When Skuld jumped down moments later, the jungle was still burning.

Maui knelt in the ashes, defeated but grinning.

Kurai stood behind him, silent as a blade.
