A zombie lunged forward. Daniel grabbed a broken pipe and jammed it through its skull with sheer desperation. The corpse collapsed, but two more immediately took its place.
Luis swallowed. "Daniel."
"Yeah?"
"I think this is it."
Daniel exhaled slowly. The alley felt too small. Too loud. Too final.
He glanced sideways at Luis.
Luis's golden hair was tangled and dirty, his usually immaculate clothes torn and stained with blood. His golden eyes were dull with exhaustion, but when he looked at Daniel, there was no fear there. Only warmth.
Daniel's chest tightened.
"Well," Daniel said quietly, "this is… not how I imagined today going."
Luis smiled crookedly. "You mean surrounded by rotting corpses while covered in blood?"
"Yes."
"Yeah," Luis agreed. "Me neither."
A zombie grabbed Daniel's arm. He wrenched free, but the movement made his vision swim.
Luis leaned closer, voice dropping. "Hey. Before they eat us… can I say something?"
Daniel stiffened. "Now?"
