Chapter 4 - Witchcraft

As the last of the light motes disappeared the house was left in complete silence with the son and mother duo left in shock and a sort of uncomfortable stillness settled with even Bruno, the excited golden retriever. And the silence was suddenly broken by the glass balcony doors being thrown open by a violent gale with snow intruding into the house and if you looked beyond, it could be seen that snow was piling up in the balcony.

And that was able to break Mark and his mother out of their orb caused stupor and they quickly sprang into action with each of them grabbing one of the doors and closing them then they raided Laura's wardrobe for clothing that would help in the weather while that was happing Bruno was munching away at the snow and playing in he did always love cold things the little bugger would at times nuzzle at the fridge's icemaker so that he could munch on the ice cubes.

Laura said while elbows deep in a tangle of sarees, "Markie I don't think the snow clothes are in my wardrobe, I think I can remember that I put them in grandpas room after we came back from that trip to Greenland plus I think grandpa's room is the best place to be right now it has a working fireplace and is deeper inside the house and is the warmest room"

When Mark heard this, he said, "I think you are right Madre I will bring some of the wood from the workshop and you grab Bruno and go to grandpa's room and try to find the clothes". After he said that Laura nodded and called out to Bruno, but he did not respond because he was too preoccupied with the snow at moments like these one regrets not training their dog.

So as seeing that the golden menace was not listening Laura grabbed onto the dog and lifted him up and she said to mark, "Be careful honey and is it okay to burn the wood I mean you love those sculptures and I know you forgot to get new wood" and mark solemnly nodded and said, " yeah we will have to burn my wood sculptures I have a lot of them we will burn the bad ones first that should last us at least until we find the solution in our books that the orb was talking about"

And Mark went downstairs into his workshop to scrounge up any sculptures that didn't hold much sentimental value, mark doesn't carve as much as he used when his grandfather was alive but there was enough pre grandpa sculptures to burn for at least two days and that should give them more than enough time.

And while Mark was doing that Laura dragged Bruno, the now snow addicted golden retriever who was very indignant that he had been forced off his white powder into the arms spindly arms of Laura his second favorite human and he made his displeasure know by his barks and trying to claw himself back to the divine white stuff.

But Laura prevailed and was able to drag the dog to her fathers old room it was mostly left alone in an unaltered manner mostly because they were too lazy to clean it but a bit of sentimentality did play a part in its state they now just used it to store winter clothes she swung open the wardrobe made of intimidating dark mahogany wood and out came spilling an avalanche of clothes.

F5rom afar it was hard to say if the clothes were suited for cold weather such as this because now one could feel the cold and the need for insulation more urgently and so Laura started to chip away at the mountain of chaos that was unorganized clothing. And finally, she was able to see the telltale sign of a winter jacket and at last she found a bunch of sweaters, jackets and winter pants.

And when she had chosen the needed outfits that were appropriate for herself and her son she started to put on the brightly colored clothing it was unfortunate that they bought all of these clothes during that color craze cause the cringe worthy color scheme included bright cherry red that was positively glowing with bubblegum pink and fluorescent lime colors.

In normal circumstances such color was no problem and even looked on positively by the Lanren duo, but it dawned on Laura that such a awkwardly clashing mess of color was not that suitable for a possibly hostile medieval world but she did not know that those clothes that looked it had been barfed on by a unicorn would come in handy for first contact unknowing of this she made up her mind by thinking of the old saying that beggars can't be choosers.

And as she was consoling herself Mark entered opening the door, that she had kept closed to avoid Bruno from going in search of his denied snow again, while carrying a huge bunch of wood carvings and one that seemed to be made from a darker wood than the rest it looked like a bad abstract impression of dachshund was precariously held between two fingers from its neck.

"Madre can you help please these are a tad bit heavy you know", when Laura heard this she bolted towards her son and took some of the wooden carvings off his hands then both of them together set the carvings down on grandpa's old bed and Mark put on the outfit that Laura selected quickly and got busy making the fire.

It was very unusual that the house had a fireplace the climate they lived in was a tropical one it rather required air conditioners than fireplaces but nevertheless the house contained many working fireplaces; one in the library one, the main office, the kitchen and the living room. The reason for this peculiarity was because of Mark's late eccentric grandfather who when building the house demanded that it contain several fireplaces and no one could deny his request due to him paying for most of the construction.

After mark was able to kindle a fire suitable enough to stave off the bone chilling cold of the North he was used to doing it due to him doing it almost routinely during their trip to Greenland, he got up from his, he got up from his kneeling position and turned towards his mother who was sitting in one of the armchairs that she was able to drag in front of the fireplace so as to be nearer to the warmth of the now roaring fireplace.

He then said, "Okay Madre I think we should get a look at these books of ours to look for protection and warmth techniques that the orb talked about you look for warmth spells in your grimoire and I will look in mine for protection we should assume that the natives of this world could be hostile towards us"

Hearing this Laura nodded, while opening her handcuffed book and donning her spectacles and so too did Mark both of them opened to the book and went to the table of contents and turned to the pages that would achieve each of their tasks. After both of them had gone through many pages reading all of the requirements, their drawbacks and advantages, timeframe of use and area of effect of each spell.

The book contained a huge amount of spells and had more pages than could be seen at first glance and the book was very informative with a lot of theory but there was not enough time to read through all of it so they mostly skimmed the book for what they needed that was a mistake that they would come to regret in the near future because magic is a tightly controlled and deeply connected energy system with a slight movement in the system would be quickly noticed.

After some time of reading both of them and writing down the spells in notepads they found after raiding grandpa's work table, looked up and Laura while looking at her notepad said, "Markie I found two spells one is easier to cast with it only requiring a drop of our blood and a short incantation and a basic looking sigil carved into the floor to anchor it but the thing is it'll only last for about a week and it'll barely cover the house the thing only has a radius of twenty meters we could use multiple anchors around the house and do weekly recharge of the anchors what do you think"

When Laura finished speaking Bruno barked a bark that seemed to be filled with the spirit of 'no thank you' but it might have been cause he was still very displeased about the denial of his snow, "I don't know Mumster I don't quite like that spell plus I think it would be prudent to use a spell that has a longer range cause I would like to encapsulate the coconut trees too because I found a few interesting spells that use coconuts as starter material and it would require too much blood in the long run to run something that big"

Laura replied, "Hmm true so I think the second one would be good for us it does have some heavy requirements, but I think we have all of them so it's the best from the rest that would fulfill our criteria. The spell needs the ashes of a living thing that is loved by a human and you know how milk Mary's son left his bonsai tree with us to look after it during their trip to India we can use it and it needs a Mahogony wooden box we can use my jewelry box also human piss and two drops of our blood one from each to power the spell and it has a radius of about eight hundred meters"

"Hmm seems doable I did need to pee anyway, I know we can't cover all of the trees so we can complement it with the previous one to cover the entire property I think we should do it immediately and we can tack on my spell that I found it needs an object that has some sentimental value with the books sigil carved into it so as to anchor the spell so we can use one of my sculptures along with cinnamon, melted brown sugar, two human tears, six drops of my blood no mixing and another sigil carved into my sculpture and your jewelry box so that my spell and your spell can be connected"

Both of them soon got to work they went throughout the house and gathered all the items and bought it to grandpa's room and then, Mark started carving the sigils into the wood using a knife that Laura had taken from the kitchen while searching for the cinnamon and sugar and she expertly extracted the tiny bonsai tree from its pot shook off the dirt and placed it into the metal incense burner that she normally used to carry around the house then poured gasoline on it and lit it on fire.

Then took the wooden box that Mark handed to her after he had carved the needed sigil unto and in one fell swop dropped the ashes into it then took the plastic cup of piss that Mark produced and poured some of it into the box then promptly threw the cup and the rest of the piss into the fireplace then used a pencil from grandpa's table that was at the end of its life to stir the piss and plant ash together then with that too was promptly thrown into the flames.

While Laura was producing her spell Mark did his too he started by carving the spell sigil on the head of the sculpture that his grandpa carved for his birthday and the connection sigil on the on its chest the sculptor it was a carving of a cat it was painted white then mixed the cinnamon, brown sugar and tears that he was able to get because he cut a piece of onion in a porcelain bowel using a porcelain spoon it had to be porcelain it was very useful they had some due to the dish set that my Chinese ex-girlfriend gifted me when she left back to China.

Then he smeared the mixture onto the sculpture in a cross pattern above both the sigils then he took the box from Laura's hand and set it down on the floor then kept his sculpture on top of it then both of them pricked their hands using a safety pin and bled the required amount on each of the anchors and when the last drop fell the objects started glowing white for a minute then stopped and then the box started to fuse with the sculpture which started to gain streaks of grey into it and the sigils carved into it gained a red hue.

A invisible force suddenly rippled outwards from the sculpture and wherever it went the cold was brought up to and if any snow was caught in its range it was then violently eviscerated and it could be seen by the Lanrens who had come on to the balcony that a dome of light blue was forming then as soon as it was completed the light blue turned dark blue and it expanded after its expansion it was able to cover the entire property.

This unforeseen expansion left the Lanrens puzzled but grateful later after consulting their books they would come to know that the place they were transported to sat on a ley line and the spell got connected to the ley line and drew power this basically sent a screaming proclamation of their arrival out into the world and out in the world the other players heard the proclamation.
