Philip was in his study when he heard a strange song drifting up from downstairs. At first, he brushed it off, thinking his mind was playing tricks on him, but then it came again, clearer, louder, than the last.
A cold shiver seized his neck like a suicidal rope, sending chills down his spine. He slammed his laptop shut, then pulled a gun from his desk drawer.
"Diego?" he called, his voice steady but edged with alarm. There was no answer.
He stepped out onto the landing, starting down the staircase, when the entire house was suddenly submerged in darkness, the power cut, leaving a haunting, suffocating dimness.
"Who the fuck are you?" Philip blurted, trying to sound bold, though fear cracked his words.
Footsteps echoed across the marble, slow and deliberate, only to fade into an eerie silence.
Then the lights flickered back to life, revealing Philip drenched in anxious sweat.
"What the fuck? Was that grand entry necessary?"
