Chapter 356 - Chapter 356, Interrogating the Corpse Seems Wasteful

Chapter 356, Interrogating the Corpse Seems Wasteful

Imiro's intervention had no impact on the port.

Once the Guild carriage left, the workers resumed their previous work, whispering among themselves.

Only the captain of the ship that Keramu had almost boarded rushed out of the cabin, wiping his sweat while asking the crew about what had just happened.

After getting the details.

And confirming that the Guild had left with the body.

He still called everyone out to verify each individual's identity once more.

...

On the carriage.

Wu Heng took out the evil sword and the spatial ring, saying, "Steward, these were retrieved from the body."

According to Guild regulations, spoils of war are first chosen by those who contributed the most.

Even though Wu Heng had injured the opponent and provided the target's whereabouts.

The final victory still came from Imiro's two strikes.

Imiro, seated across from him, glanced at the items and said calmly, "You keep them for now. Have Moya inventory them once we're back, and then we can split the spoils."

"Understood." Wu Heng nodded and stored the items in his spatial ring.

Then he asked, "Steward, this 'Keramu' seemed quite familiar with the Guild's rules. Now that he's dead, will there be any trouble?"

After all, there was an inspector envoy stationed on the island.

They might not seem particularly useful, but they did have supervisory duties over the regional Guilds.

If he really wanted to cause trouble, it might indeed become an issue.

Imiro replied, "The stationed steward has special emergency authority over local situations. Killing him was within the rules."

"That's good to hear!" Wu Heng nodded.

The carriage continued forward, and the two casually chatted.

They arrived at the Guild's entrance.

Both of them disembarked.

Imiro said, "Go take the body for an autopsy."

"Oh, alright!" Wu Heng nodded and walked towards the morgue along the stone steps on the side.

...

The cold morgue housed several bodies.

The bodies of the Deer Merchant Group's manager and his lover were still in their original places.

Since many things were still under investigation, they hadn't been returned to the merchant group.

Seeing Wu Heng approach, the two coroners stood up and saluted, "Deputy Steward."

Despite his suspension, everyone still showed the same respect.

No one knew when he might be reinstated.

The title hadn't changed.

"Hmm, here is the body of a wanted criminal killed by the steward, named 'Keramu'. Verify his identity," Wu Heng said, placing the corpse, wrapped in a straw mat, on the table.

The two coroners nodded, jointly lifting the body onto the iron table. The head rolled out of the mat and rolled aside.

One of the coroners picked up the head.

They then began unwrapping the straw mat to conduct the examination.

Wu Heng sat on a wooden chair by the door, watching them work while contemplating his next plan.

The course of events had turned out quite well.

The hidden enemy had been lured out and killed directly.

It resolved a potential threat.

Of course, there had been significant losses too, such as the death of a level 15 skeletal servant.

Level 15 skeletons were already rare, mostly used as his means of survival, and now it had been killed.

It was indeed a painful loss.

His gaze swept over the corpse being examined.

His mind pondered.

Tap, tap, tap~!

Footsteps echoed from the stairs.

Assistant Moya arrived, accompanied by two Guild investigators.

He looked around the morgue, then turned his gaze to Wu Heng, "The steward said you intended to interrogate the corpse, so I brought the investigators for you."

Interrogating the corpse!

By interrogating the corpse, it was highly likely they could learn who had hired Keramu to come to the island and kill him.

It could also provide a breakthrough to investigate the Deer Merchant Group's murderer.

However, as a necromancer.

Much of his strength came from the collection of corpses.

Even though Keramu had been killed by Imiro's two strikes, his performance during the fight with Wu Heng showed exceptional skill and combat awareness.

Bloodhand, a level 15 warrior, Wu Heng as a mage, and Andviel providing sniper support from a distance.

Under such circumstances, Keramu still managed to kill Bloodhand and escape the scene.

Using this body just to ask some questions felt like a waste.

After a quick thought, Wu Heng stood up and said, "Assistant Moya, could we speak privately?"

Moya followed him aside.

Wu Heng said, "I plan not to interrogate the corpse just yet; there are some theories I need to verify first."

Moya frowned, "Keramu is dead. The people behind him, upon hearing the news, will most likely try to leave the island. By then, there's a high chance they'll attempt to escape."

Wu Heng nodded, "Give me half a day! If my theories are wrong, I will proceed with the interrogation immediately."

Moya continued to look at him, pondering for a moment, "It seems like you're not concerned about whether you get reinstated."

Wu Heng was taken aback, "How could I not be? The Guild is my home."

"I'll let the steward know about this, but keep in mind that if the perpetrator escapes or we fail to identify the Deer Merchant Group's murderer, it will complicate your case," Moya reminded again.

"Understood!" Wu Heng took out the spoils of war and said, "These were taken from the body. The steward asked me to hand them over to you so we can split them later."

Moya took the items, "I'll sort through these when I get back. Come by tomorrow to collect your share."

"Alright!" Wu Heng nodded.

"I'll head back and inform the steward," Moya said, seeing Wu Heng return to his seat, "Are you staying here?"

"Nothing else to do, might as well keep watch," Wu Heng replied.

Moya raised an eyebrow, understanding his meaning.

Wu Heng was concerned someone within the Guild might sabotage the body.

"Alright, I'll be on my way. If anything comes up, come find me."

Wu Heng nodded, and Moya left with the two investigators.

After about half an hour.

The coroners completed their examination and even stitched the severed head back onto the body.

It was just a superficial stitch; the broken bones looked a bit out of place.

"Deputy Steward, the examination is complete. It is indeed 'Keramu'."

Wu Heng stood up and said, "Follow the usual process and record everything. This body is very important; I'll need to take it with me for now."

"Understood, Deputy Steward!"

Wrapping the body back in the straw mat, Wu Heng stored it in his spatial ring.

He left the morgue in large strides.

Exiting the Guild, he took Skull-crusher and headed home.

...

Upon returning home.

As he opened the iron gate, the skeletal guards in the courtyard.

All turned their skulls towards him simultaneously, exuding a rather intense sense of pressure.

"Spread out!" Wu Heng ordered directly.

The skeletal guards moved to spread out, covering the entire courtyard.

Minnie and Andviel rushed out of the house.

"Master, are you alright!"

"Master, were you hurt?"

The two women, one on each side, began examining him.

When they saw Bloodhand shattered into a pile of bones at the scene, it had truly frightened them.

"I'm fine, absolutely fine!" Wu Heng said.

Seeing he was unharmed, the two maids finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Minnie asked, "What happened to that bad guy?"

"He's dead. We caught him at the port; he almost managed to escape," Wu Heng said, leading them inside.

"Wow, Master, you're amazing!" Minnie exclaimed.

"Um... it wasn't me, the steward killed him," Wu Heng clarified.

Back in the room, seeing that they were interested in the details, Wu Heng briefly recounted what had happened.

When they heard that Imiro had decapitated the enemy with two strikes.

Minnie and Andviel were both somewhat surprised.

After all, Keramu had killed the level 15 Bloodhand, escaped sniper fire, and evaded numerous skeletons.

He had shown remarkable combat and survival skills.

For such a person to be killed by the steward with just two strikes.

It seemed a bit exaggerated.

"Steward Imiro seems stronger than Steward Gomez," Andviel said.

Gomez was the steward of Rentam City.

"Much stronger. Gomez probably can't even beat you now," Wu Heng replied bluntly.

Gomez's level was estimated to be around level 12.

Although Andviel's level was lower, after taking so many potions, her attributes might not be inferior to Gomez's.

With some firearms, she could possibly even defeat him.

"No way!" Andviel said shyly, leaning in slightly.

Minnie then asked, "Master, have you been reinstated yet?"

"Not yet. We'll see how things go in a few days. If there's no other way, we'll interrogate the corpse."

"Oh, alright!" Minnie nodded, "Master, what would you like for dinner? We should celebrate your victory. You looked so dashing chasing after that bad guy with a sword."

Wu Heng said, "Just prepare something simple. Things aren't over yet, let's stay in for now."

"Okay, got it!"

...

Elsewhere, in a dimly lit tavern.

A soundproofing device was activated.

Inspector Envoy Kalema, with a dark expression, said, "The one who tried to assassinate Wu Heng is dead?"

"Keramu, that useless fool, was killed by Imiro at the port. Damn it, Mr. Kalema, we should leave quickly before the Guild starts looking for us," said the captain, sounding anxious.

Kalema continued to stare at him coldly, "Does anyone else know about our dealings?"
