Chapter 9 - 9: First Night

The commotion at the main office got a lot of complaints from the students.

Talk about a good way to start the school year.

The administration, although showing that they care about the students' opinions, seems to haven't done anything about the issue.

Power really can keep the issue at bay.

Other than the commotion at the main office, the first day was good for Laurel. She was shocked at the sight of such a bigshot in her school, but she can't really do anything.

Rather than react badly, she would rather turn her attention to the hand.

Her first night in the academy.

Since her fridge is full of food for her to eat, and she even got some cooked food from her mother, she doesn't really need to go out to eat in a restaurant. Although she has a plan to go there for exploration purposes,.

She wanted to criticize the facilities that the academy promised.

But for now, she has another thing she wants to do.

After finishing eating her dinner and washing her dishes, rather than getting a shower and preparing for bed, Laurel went and got some workout leggings and some sports bras and paired them with a zipped up jacket.

She looked at her reflection in the mirror and stared at it, finding it lacking.

However, she really doesn't have what.

Finding it fruitless, Laurel shrugged and turned her back from the full length mirror.

You might be wondering what Laurel is planning to do.

Well, she is actually planning to go for a late-night stroll in the city.

Laurel has been planning to explore and go out on her own, but because of her father's protectiveness, she was left in the confines of their home after she was discharged from the hospital.

Though there were times when she was permitted to go outside, many guards were always on her tail.

It was quite suffocating.

But she can't really protest against her father since they almost lost her. She can't imagine how they would react if she indeed died.

At times, she was curious what their reaction would be when she died in every life that she ended up living. But she knows better than to be curious about such a thing since she knows it is not a good sight.

Either way, her desire to feel freedom still persisted. At least these simple ways of strolling on her own can give her that satisfaction.

It was one of the main reasons why she wanted to go to college, but her father chose a quite strict school that made it hard for her to execute her plan.

But it won't stop her from finding a way to break free and get that much needed stroll.

For that plan, she uses her time strolling the academy to find loopholes in security cameras for her escape. And through her experience and professionalism that she earned from being once a S-rank hunter, she found some areas where she could potentially slip through undetected.

And tonight, she will use that path to go to the city.

For her to be barely detected, she also purposely wore all black clothes with a hood to cover her face.

She also made sure to inspect her whole room for any bugs planted by the academy, just in case they were monitoring her movements.

She also made sure to leave her ID, pin, and tab on her table since she knew it had a tracker. Otherwise, why would they advise it to be worn at all times?

With her preparations complete, she felt confident in her ability to execute her escape plan successfully.

She wore her hood over her head to make sure her face was not visible. Then, in a stealthy way, she opened her door, and after making sure that the corridor was empty, she walked out of her room.

Laurel took a deep breath, centering herself as she stood in the dimly lit hallway.

Her senses were heightened, and every sound was magnified in the stillness of the night. She knew she had to be cautious, moving with precision and stealth.

First, she made her way to the stairwell, avoiding the elevators, which had cameras installed. Her steps were light, barely making a sound on the concrete steps.

Reaching the ground floor, she paused at the door, listening intently for any sign of movement or voices. Hearing none, she slowly pushed the door open, ensuring it didn't creak.

She crouched low, staying close to the walls as she navigated through the ground floor corridors. The hallways were dimly lit, with only emergency lights casting long shadows.

Laurel had memorized the patrol schedule of the night guards, knowing she had a brief window before they made their rounds.

As she approached the main exit, she slipped into a janitor's closet nearby. From here, she accessed a maintenance tunnel she had discovered earlier during her reconnaissance.

The tunnel was narrow and dusty, but it provided an unmonitored route to the outer perimeter of the academy.

She crawled through the tunnel, her black clothing blending into the shadows. Reaching the end, she pushed open a small grate that led to the outside.

Emerging from the tunnel, she found herself in a secluded area behind the gymnasium. The cool night air hit her face, invigorating her with a sense of freedom.

Laurel knew the hardest part was yet to come. The academy's perimeter was secured with a high fence and surveillance cameras.

However, she had identified a blind spot in the camera coverage. Staying low and using the shadows for cover, she made her way to the fence.

At the blind spot, she carefully scaled the fence, her movements fluid, and practiced. She dropped silently to the other side, landing on soft grass.

She took a moment to catch her breath, her heart racing with exhilaration.

Now beyond the school grounds, Laurel moved swiftly towards the city lights in the distance. The night was hers, and for the first time in a long while, she felt a sense of freedom and control over her own life.

As she walked towards the city, she couldn't help but smile, savoring the quiet triumph of her successful escape.

When she was a decent distance away from the academy, Laurel finally removed her hood, and a small smile graced her lips.

She breathed in as if it were the first time in a while since she got some fresh hair.

Excitement courses through her body as she steps into the bustling night of city life.

Laurel was feeling giddy for the first time in a long time as she passed through different shops and found some that she found interesting and went into one of those.

She dined in one of the coffee shops and ordered some iced ameri cano, savoring the cool, refreshing taste as she watched the people passing by outside.

The vibrant energy of the city at night was infectious, and Laurel felt a sense of freedom and adventure stirring within her.

When she was finished with her drink, she went out of the shop and continued exploring the city.

She was walking in the bustling side streets when her eyes caught sight of a customs store.

She went inside, and she was welcomed by different types of wigs, accessories , and makeup products.

Intrigued, Laurel decided to browse through the store and ended up trying on a few wigs just for fun, feeling a surge of confidence with each new look she tried.

In the end, when she left the shop, she had new hair placed on top of her head.

It has the complete opposite color of her natural hair, which is black. It was now platinum white blonde.

It was much longer than her hair's length, and it had full bangs. Laurel was surprised by how much she loved the new look and decided to embrace the change, feeling empowered by her bold decision.

As she walked out of the store with her new platinum white blonde wig, she received glances from the people around her.

All of them are in awe.
