The sound of clinking spoons and cheerful chatter filled the apartment that morning.
Maya sat on her booster seat, her pink backpack already zipped and standing upright beside her. A wide smile danced on her lips as she stuffed a spoonful of cereal into her mouth. Nathan, sitting beside her, practically vibrated with energy, swinging his legs under the table as he chattered about what they were going to play at school.
It was a welcome sight—Maya was back to her bubbly self, her cheeks full and glowing again after days of looking pale and tired.
Katherine placed a few sliced strawberries into the bowl in front of Maya and ruffled her daughter's soft hair. "Not only is Maya back to her usual self," she began in a sing-song tone, eyes twinkling, "but I have more good news."
Both children turned their attention to her instantly.
Maya tilted her head. "What is it, Mommy?"
Nathan leaned forward, mouth open in mid-chew.
Katherine smiled. "Jazz is ready to babysit you two again."
