Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Lucky To Be Alive

Sofia's POV

I woke up feeling a sense of anticipation. Eric was still sleeping, but I couldn't wait to start the day. I got dressed quickly, trying not to make too much noise, but I accidentally knocked over a water bottle, causing a loud clattering noise.

Eric's eyes snapped open, and he sat up with a start. "What was that?" he asked, his voice groggy with sleep.

I felt a surge of embarrassment. "Sorry, I just knocked over a water bottle," I replied, trying to play it off.

Eric nodded, lying back down.

I nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. But I was looking forward to our scavenging mission today. We needed to find more food and supplies, and I was hoping we'd get lucky.

As we finished getting dressed, Eric stood up, stretching his arms over his head. "Let's get some breakfast," he said, his eyes scanning the small kitchen area.

I smiled, feeling a sense of relief that we had enough food for breakfast. "Sounds good to me," I said.

________

We sat down to eat, "We need to scavenge for more supplies," Eric replied, his eyes scanning the horizon. "We're running low on food."

"I'm so sick of canned goods," I said, making a face.

"It's better than going hungry." He coldly replied

I nodded, taking a sip of my coffee. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

As we finished our breakfast, Eric stood up, his eyes locked on mine. "Let's go," he said, his voice firm but casual.

I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. We needed to find those supplies, and I was ready to do whatever it took.

We geared up, grabbing our backpacks and checking our supplies. As we set out, I felt a sense of focus like we had a mission to complete or maybe we did ,and I was ready to get it done.

As we walked through the deserted streets, I kept my eyes peeled for any signs of danger. Eric walked beside me, his eyes scanning the horizon.

After a while, we arrived at the supermarket. It was a huge building, with rows and rows of shelves that seemed to stretch on forever. I felt a sense of hope as we stepped inside.

As we walked through the supermarket, I let out a little gasp of excitement when I saw a stash of canned goods. "Eric, look," I said, trying to keep my voice down.

Eric's head snapped towards me, his eyes narrowed in annoyance. "Sofia, quiet!" he hissed, his voice low and urgent.

My fingers trailed over the dusty cans on the shelf, my eyes scanning the labels. As I reached for a can of peaches, my elbow knocked against a nearby jar, sending it crashing to the floor.

Eric's voice was low and urgent behind me. "Sophia !"

Too late, the creatures had already heard us. I could hear their twisted, ear-like appendages twitching as they honed in on our location.

"Eric, I'm sorry," I whispered, feeling a surge of fear.

But Eric just grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the exit.

As we ran, the creatures gave chase, their appendages twitching wildly as they followed the sound of our footsteps.

I could hear them getting closer and closer, their labored breathing and scuttling footsteps sending chills down my spine.

Eric pulled me through the crowded aisles, dodging shelves and leaping over obstacles. I stamped on something, I didn't see it though.

"Keep moving!" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the din of the creatures.

I nodded, my heart racing with fear. I knew we had to get out of there, fast.

As we burst through the exit doors, I felt a rush of cool air hit me.

As we ran, I could feel Eric's hand gripping mine, his fingers tight with fear. But he didn't let go.

We stopped running after a few blocks, finally feeling safe enough to catch our breath. Eric leaned against a nearby tree, his eyes scanning the surrounding area.

I stood beside him, my chest heaving with exhaustion. "What just happened?" I asked, still trying to process the events at the supermarket.

Eric's expression turned dark, his eyes flashing with anger. "You almost got us killed, that's what happened," he spat, his voice low and menacing. "I told you to be quiet, but you just couldn't help yourself, could you? You had to go and make a noise, and now we're lucky to be alive."

I felt a surge of defensiveness, but Eric didn't give me a chance to respond. He turned and stormed off, leaving me standing alone on the sidewalk.

"Eric, wait!" I called after him, but he didn't stop. He just kept walking, his back stiff with anger.

I sighed and followed after him, my heart heavy with emotion. We walked in silence for a while, the only sound being the echo of our footsteps off the buildings.

Finally, we arrived back at the cave. Eric stalked inside, his anger still palpable. I followed after him, feeling a sense of trepidation.

As I entered the cave, I saw Eric standing by the fire, his back still stiff with anger. I knew I had to apologize, to try and make things right between us.

But as I looked at Eric, I saw the anger still burning in his eyes, and I knew it wouldn't be easy.

I approached him slowly, feeling a mix of fear and regret. As I reached his side, I whispered a soft apology, hoping he would understand. "Eric, I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to..."

But Eric's expression remained unreadable, his eyes fixed on the flames. I felt a lump form in my throat as I realized he didn't understand. He didn't know that it had been an accident, that I had never meant to cause trouble.

I stood there, feeling the silence between us grow thicker, heavier. The fire crackled and spat, casting flickering shadows on the walls. But Eric's anger remained, a palpable force that seemed to push me away.

As the silence stretched out, I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes. I had been so careful, so meticulous. But one careless moment had undone it all.

I took a step back, feeling the weight of Eric's displeasure settle heavy on my shoulders. The fire's warmth seemed to fade, leaving only a chill of regret.
