Chapter 34 - Shadows of the Past

Saad sat in his car, the engine idling as he stared blankly at the road ahead. The weight of his decisions felt heavier than ever. Maya needed time to process, and now Zara was reaching out again, pulling him back into the past he thought he had left behind.

His phone buzzed again, breaking the silence. It was another message from Zara:

"Can we talk? I really need to see you."

Saad's heart raced. The request was innocent enough, but he knew better. Every time he met with Zara, it opened a floodgate of emotions he struggled to control. He had just taken a step toward mending things with Maya, but here was Zara, like a siren, calling him back to the rocky shores of their history.

After several minutes of deliberation, Saad typed back:

"Okay. Let's meet tomorrow at the café."

With that, he felt a mix of relief and anxiety wash over him. He could meet Zara and maybe finally put things to rest—or perhaps, reignite the flames of their past.

The next day, Saad arrived at the café early, the familiar ambiance swirling with the scent of coffee and pastries. As he sat down at their usual table, he replayed memories in his mind—the laughter, the shared dreams, the heartbreak. Each moment felt like a double-edged sword.

When Zara finally walked in, his breath caught in his throat. She looked beautiful, as always, but there was an edge to her demeanor—nervous energy mixed with determination. She spotted him and waved, her smile hesitant but genuine.

"Hey," she said, sliding into the seat across from him. "Thanks for meeting me."

"Of course," Saad replied, forcing a smile despite the turmoil in his heart.

Zara glanced around, then leaned in slightly, her voice low. "I wanted to talk about us. I've missed you, Saad. It's been hard since we... well, since everything happened."

Saad felt a pang of guilt wash over him. "I've missed you too, Zara. But I need you to know, I'm with someone now. Maya."

"I know," she said, her expression serious. "But that's why I wanted to talk. I need to understand what happened between us and why it didn't work out. I thought we had something special."

Saad sighed, knowing this conversation could only lead to trouble. "We did, Zara. But we were young, and I didn't handle things well. I thought I could be everything for you, but I wasn't ready for what we had."

Zara looked down at her hands, fidgeting with her rings. "I've changed, Saad. I've had time to reflect. I've realized how much you meant to me. And honestly, I still have feelings for you."

His heart raced at her words, conflicting emotions battling within him. "But I'm with Maya now. I want to make it work with her."

Zara looked up, her eyes glistening. "I get that, but it doesn't mean you don't still care about me. I think we both know there's still a connection between us. Can't we at least explore that?"

Saad felt a heavy weight on his chest. "Exploring what? We've tried this before. It ended badly, and I don't want to hurt anyone else, especially Maya."

Zara leaned back, crossing her arms defensively. "So you're just going to ignore what we had? Pretend it didn't mean anything?"

"It meant everything," he replied, frustration creeping into his voice. "But that's exactly why I need to move on. I can't go back to the way things were. I'm trying to build something with Maya."

Zara's expression softened, but her resolve remained. "Maybe you need to figure out what you really want. You can't keep living in the shadows of your past, Saad. You need to decide who you want to be with."

Saad stared at her, feeling trapped in a whirlwind of emotions. "I thought I knew, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe I haven't fully let go of the past."

The conversation hung heavily between them, filled with unspoken truths and unresolved feelings. Saad felt himself wavering, the boundaries between past and present beginning to blur.

Meanwhile, back at Maya's apartment, she was trying to distract herself from the chaos in her heart. She had spent the day with Ayesha, shopping and chatting about everything but Saad. But even as they laughed, her thoughts drifted back to him—wondering what he was doing, if he was thinking about her.

Ayesha noticed her distracted demeanor and nudged her. "You're really worried about him, aren't you?"

Maya sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I just don't know if I can trust him again. He says he wants to make it work, but how do I know he won't just hurt me again?"

"Trust takes time," Ayesha replied, her tone gentle but firm. "You have to focus on what you want, not just what he wants. If you feel this way, it's valid."

Maya nodded, appreciating Ayesha's support but still feeling the weight of her decision. As they left the store, she noticed a familiar figure walking by—a glimpse of Saad at the café they often frequented.

Her heart sank at the sight.

Later that evening, Saad returned home, feeling torn and confused. He had talked with Zara but hadn't reached any conclusions. As he walked through his door, he found his phone buzzing with a new message.

It was from Maya:

"Can we talk tonight? I saw you at the café with Zara."

Panic surged through him.

How could he explain that he was trying to make sense of his feelings? His heart raced as he typed back:

"Yes, of course. I'll be there in a bit."

As he prepared to meet Maya, Saad felt the weight of his choices bearing down on him. He was at a critical crossroads—one path leading to the comfort of his past and the other to the uncertain promise of his future with Maya.

He took a deep breath, reminding himself that honesty was his only option now.
