Emily fought back desperately, scratching his face with her hands.
Old Peter raised the pliers to scare Carl. He didn't really want to hit anyone, just wanted to scare them off.
But the arrogance fostered by alcohol and long-term abuse of power had caused Carl to lose his mind.
He saw Old Peter holding a "weapon," cursed, and reached for his gun from the holster at his waist and pulled out his pistol.
"Put it down! Or I'll shoot!" Carl shouted, aiming the gun at Old Peter.
Old Peter froze, not expecting the other to use a gun. Emily was so frightened she stopped struggling.
"Drop the pliers! Kneel!" Carl continued to shout, his finger on the trigger.
Roy sneered from the side.
Old Peter slowly put down the pliers but did not kneel. Instead, he stared at Carl: "Are you... are you soldiers? How can you do this?"
Somehow, these words stung Carl, perhaps because he himself despised his position.
