Chapter 859 - Chapter 859: Trap

Two hours later, in the corner of the Namikaze family living room, an embarrassing sound broke the tense silence.

Grumble...

Naruto's stomach protested loudly against the extended punishment, reminding everyone present that he hadn't eaten anything since leaving home that morning. The prolonged physical strain of holding heavy water buckets had only intensified his hunger.

Beside him, Minato maintained his own punishment stance with a resigned expression. Despite being arguably more innocent than even Jiraiya in this particular situation—having done absolutely nothing to encourage or enable the development of the Sexy Jutsu—he found himself sharing his son's fate due to his perceived failure in supervision.

Suddenly, Kushina's head appeared around the edge of the doorway separating the kitchen from the living room, her sharp eyes immediately focusing on the source of the disturbance.

"Naruto," Minato whispered urgently, having noticed his wife's surveillance and hoping to warn his son before the situation deteriorated further.

However, Naruto seemed too focused on his hunger and discomfort to register his father's attempted warning. His attention remained fixed on maintaining his balance while fantasizing about the dinner that seemed increasingly distant.

"It appears that your current punishment is insufficient," Kushina announced with raised eyebrows, striding purposefully toward the two guilty parties.

By the time Naruto finally noticed his mother's approach, it was far too late to correct his behavior.

"Both of you will continue your reflection outside in the courtyard!" she declared with finality.

SLAM!

The door closed with decisive force, leaving father and son alone with their thoughts and their growing hunger.

Minato and Naruto exchanged glances before the younger of the two spoke with genuine remorse.

"I'm really sorry, Dad. I dragged you into this mess because of my stupid technique."

"Don't apologize," Minato replied, shaking his head with paternal understanding. "I'm your father, and I failed to provide proper guidance. This situation is ultimately my responsibility."

While Minato didn't necessarily consider Naruto's development of the Sexy Jutsu to be inherently problematic from a tactical standpoint, he certainly should have anticipated and prevented Kushina from discovering it in such a shocking manner.

"I'm so hungry," Naruto said mournfully, swallowing hard as his stomach continued its audible protests.

Ten minutes later, the door in front of them opened just wide enough for someone to extend two carefully prepared lunch boxes through the gap.

Through the narrow opening, both father and son caught a glimpse of Chiharu's concerned face before she quickly closed the door again, maintaining plausible deniability for her act of mercy.

The aroma rising from the food containers was almost overwhelming to their deprived senses, and even Minato's stomach began responding with audible rumbles of anticipation.

"Naruto, eat quickly," Minato said with relief, picking up one of the boxes and handing it to his son.

"Is it okay if Mom finds out we're eating?" Naruto asked cautiously, accepting the container while casting nervous glances toward the kitchen.

Minato picked up the second lunch box and smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry about it. The fact that Chiharu felt safe enough to bring us this food suggests that your mother's anger has cooled down considerably. Otherwise, she never would have risked helping us."

Naruto considered this logic, nodded in agreement, and eagerly opened his meal to begin satisfying his desperate hunger.

Meanwhile, far from the domestic trials of the Namikaze household, a very different kind of tension was building in the mountainous terrain between the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind.

The Land of Stone, as it was commonly known, derived its name from the predominance of rocky terrain and stone formations that characterized its landscape. Among these natural fortifications, one particular stone mountain had become the focus of intense surveillance.

For hours, Shibi and the other members of Konoha's reconnaissance squad had maintained their concealed positions among the rocks, waiting for the intelligence exchange that their mission briefing had predicted would occur in this location.

Sasuke pressed his body firmly against the cold stone surface, controlling his breathing to ensure that even the slightest sound wouldn't betray their presence to potential enemies. The oppressive atmosphere of genuine danger was completely unlike anything he had experienced during previous missions.

This level of tension and the constant awareness that discovery could mean death created a psychological pressure that was entirely new to his experience as a ninja.

Not far from Sasuke's position, Aburame Shibi glanced in the young Uchiha's direction, noting with approval how well he was adapting to the demanding requirements of reconnaissance work.

For someone who had received no specialized training in covert operations and possessed no previous experience with this type of mission, Sasuke's ability to maintain discipline and composure for such an extended period was genuinely impressive.

Among the new generation of ninja who had grown up during peacetime, Sasuke was demonstrating exceptional adaptability to the harsh realities of potentially lethal intelligence gathering.

Suddenly, Shibi felt a familiar sensation as one of his scout insects emerged from a crack in the rock formation and crawled onto his fingertip. The information it conveyed caused his expression to shift dramatically.

"Why are there so many of them?" he wondered silently.

The intelligence reports that had reached Konoha had indicated a planned meeting between Iwagakure representatives and the mysterious mercenary organization, but the scale of the enemy force now approaching far exceeded anything described in their briefing materials.

Shibi immediately signaled a warning to his team, and the alert was passed quickly through the squad using hand gestures and subtle movements.

Sasuke's body tensed as he received the danger signal, and his ordinary dark eyes transformed into the distinctive red of the Sharingan as his combat instincts activated.

Swoosh!

Without warning, numerous figures appeared at the base of the stone mountain, moving with coordinated precision as they simultaneously began forming hand seals for what appeared to be a large-scale collaborative technique.

The leader of the attacking force looked up toward the concealed reconnaissance team with obvious amusement, his expression showing the satisfaction of someone whose trap had been successfully sprung.

"Earth Release: Combined Mountain Collapse!" multiple voices shouted in unison.

BOOM!

Dozens of Iwagakure ninja executed their earth manipulation techniques simultaneously, creating a massive seismic disturbance that shook the entire mountain formation. The stone peak, which had already been relatively unstable, began developing severe structural cracks throughout its entire mass.

Within moments, the entire mountain was collapsing in a catastrophic avalanche of rock and debris.

Fortunately, Shibi's advance warning had given the reconnaissance team precious seconds to prepare for the attack. As the mountain disintegrated beneath them, nearly every squad member managed to leap to safety, avoiding the deadly crushing force of falling stone.

While Sasuke felt a momentary shock at the scale and coordination of the enemy assault, he didn't allow panic to overwhelm his tactical thinking. Although he had never faced anything quite like this during his previous missions, the experience of surviving Nagato's devastating attack on Konoha six months earlier had provided him with a mental framework for handling catastrophic situations.

His body moved with agile precision as he followed the other reconnaissance team members to a relatively secure position among the rubble. While his Sharingan hadn't evolved significantly during the intervening months, his mastery of its current abilities and his overall ninja skills had improved considerably through intensive training.

"It appears we've been deliberately deceived," Shibi observed grimly as dust and debris settled around their new position. "Someone sold us false intelligence specifically to lure us into this trap."

The enemy's obvious intention was to eliminate Konoha's reconnaissance capabilities, knowing that the loss of such experienced intelligence-gathering specialists would significantly hamper the village's ability to monitor threats and gather crucial information.

While a substantial portion of the reconnaissance squad consisted of sensor-type ninja, virtually every member of the team possessed exceptional skills that made them valuable assets. Reconnaissance work formed the foundation of all strategic operations, and the ninja assigned to such critical duties were naturally selected from among Konoha's elite forces.

The notable exception to this rule was Sasuke, whose presence remained something of an anomaly given his lack of specialized training.

A sensor ninja from the squad completed a quick surveillance technique before reporting with obvious alarm: "Captain, there are multiple powerful chakra signatures approaching from our six o'clock position, and several of them register as significantly dangerous!"

Perspiration was visible on the sensor's forehead as he processed the implications of what his abilities had detected.

"Don't worry about the forces behind us yet," Shibi commanded with tactical authority. "Focus all attention on engaging the immediate threat in front of us!"

Through the swirling dust cloud ahead of them, the Iwagakure ninja who had executed the mountain-destroying technique were already advancing toward their position, clearly intending to finish off any survivors before they could escape or call for reinforcements.

While the team was naturally concerned about the additional enemies approaching from behind, Shibi's strategic assessment was correct—their immediate survival depended on dealing with the present threat before attempting to address future complications.

As several enemy ninja stepped carefully across the unstable rock debris, Shibi raised his arms slightly and gestured with subtle precision.

"Secret Technique: Parasitic Destruction Insect Technique!"

"AAAAHHHHH!" screams erupted immediately as massive swarms of black insects suddenly emerged from tiny cracks and crevices throughout the rubble, instantly enveloping the bodies of the advancing enemies.

The insects moved with terrifying efficiency, covering their targets completely within seconds.

"Insect Sphere!" Shibi commanded, clenching his hands into reverse fists.

The insects surrounding each enemy tightened their formation and began their devastating work. The screaming stopped abruptly as the parasitic creatures consumed not only the victims' chakra but their flesh, blood, muscle, and bone as well.

When the insect swarms finally dispersed, the several Iwagakure ninja had vanished completely, leaving not even skeletal remains to mark their existence.

This demonstration of Shibi's lethal capabilities shocked the remaining Rock ninja into hesitation, causing them to halt their advance as they reassessed the threat level they were facing.

"Incredible!" Sasuke breathed, his Sharingan having allowed him to observe every detail of Shibi's technique.

The speed and thoroughness with which the insects had consumed their targets was both impressive and deeply unsettling. Within moments, living human beings had been reduced to nothing more than consumed chakra and digested organic matter.

However, the Iwagakure forces had not come unprepared for such resistance.

"Earth Release: Stone Dragon Technique!" came a chorus of voices from among the scattered rocks.

ROAR!

The broken stone debris suddenly began reshaping itself into more than a dozen massive dragon-like constructs, each one lifting its head menacingly toward Sasuke and his teammates. The stone dragons moved with surprising agility despite their considerable size, their eyes glowing with the chakra that animated their forms.

The battle had only just begun, and the reconnaissance team found themselves facing enemies both in front of them and approaching rapidly from behind.
