Chapter 855 - Chapter 855: Each One's Own Path

In the Hokage's office, morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows as Minato concluded his review of the day's mission assignments. The familiar routine of village administration continued despite the underlying tensions that plagued the ninja world.

"This is your assignment for today," Minato said formally, extending a mission scroll toward Kakashi, who stood at attention before the imposing desk.

Kakashi accepted the document with his characteristic professionalism, while behind him, Naruto's expression clearly betrayed his growing frustration with their recent assignments.

"Dad, it's been an entire month," Naruto protested, his voice carrying the exasperation of youth confronted with mundane responsibility. "Why do we keep getting stuck with these boring chores?"

Since the team reorganization that had formed the new Team 7 configuration, Naruto, Chiharu, and Sai had been assigned exclusively to low-level missions—the same type of simple tasks typically given to fresh Academy graduates. While such assignments served important functions within the village's daily operations, they provided little opportunity for the kind of excitement and challenge that ambitious young ninja craved.

Minato offered his son a patient smile, understanding both the complaint and its underlying causes. "Unfortunately, that's simply the reality of our current situation. While the village's physical reconstruction has been largely completed, there are still countless civilians who require assistance from ninja personnel for various tasks that are beyond their capabilities."

The explanation carried implicit reminders about duty and service that helped mollify Naruto's disappointment, though his expression suggested that acceptance remained reluctant.

After receiving their assignment, Kakashi departed with his three charges, leaving Minato alone with his thoughts and the weight of larger concerns that couldn't be shared with genin-level operatives.

"This approach isn't sustainable indefinitely," observed a familiar voice from the window. "Naruto's patience has limits, and his frustration is becoming increasingly obvious."

Minato glanced toward the source of the comment, unsurprised to find Jiraiya perched casually on the windowsill. The legendary Sannin had a talent for appearing unannounced whenever important conversations needed to take place.

"You're absolutely right," Minato agreed without hesitation, his expression growing more serious as he addressed the core issue. "The problem is that during our last confrontation, Nagato seemed to recognize something significant about Naruto's true nature."

He paused, allowing the implications to settle before continuing. "Their ultimate plan is almost certainly connected to the tailed beasts in some fundamental way."

At the mention of Nagato, Jiraiya's expression showed the familiar pain of a mentor whose student had chosen a path of destruction. Both Minato and Nagato had been among his most cherished disciples, making their current opposition a source of personal anguish that extended far beyond tactical concerns.

Recognizing his teacher's emotional discomfort, Minato deliberately shifted the conversation toward more actionable matters. "That's precisely why I wanted to speak with you today. I think it's time for you to take direct responsibility for Naruto's training. He needs to become significantly stronger as quickly as possible."

Minato's gaze grew more intense as he emphasized the urgency of the situation. "What you said about his temperament is absolutely correct—he can't remain confined to the village indefinitely. Sooner or later, circumstances will force him into situations where his current abilities won't be sufficient."

Jiraiya couldn't suppress a chuckle at this request, though his amusement carried undertones of both affection and mild incredulity. "Haven't you been doing an excellent job training Naruto yourself? Why would you need me to interfere with your methods?"

In terms of pure combat effectiveness, while Jiraiya certainly ranked among the world's most formidable fighters, his abilities couldn't compare to Minato's current level of power—a fact that made the request seem somewhat puzzling on its surface.

"Teacher, please don't tease me about this," Minato replied with a rueful smile, recognizing both the compliment and the gentle mockery in Jiraiya's response. "When it comes to training disciples, I'm still far inferior to your expertise and experience."

The admission was both honest and practical. Minato's fighting style, while devastatingly effective, relied heavily on techniques and approaches that weren't well-suited to Naruto's natural abilities or personality. More importantly, his responsibilities as Hokage left him with insufficient time to provide the intensive, personalized instruction that Naruto's development required.

"After gaining a better understanding of Nagato's group and their long-term objectives," Minato continued, "I've realized that waiting passively for their next move would be strategically disastrous."

"Don't worry," Jiraiya said, reaching out to place a reassuring hand on Minato's shoulder. "I'll take good care of that boy."

Having observed his former student over the years, Jiraiya understood better than most the tremendous burden that Minato carried as both Hokage and father. The weight of protecting not just his family but the entire village had grown heavier with each passing crisis.

"Thank you," Minato replied gratefully, but their conversation was interrupted by a respectful knock at the office door.

The door opened to admit two figures wearing the distinctive cat-faced masks and dark uniforms of ANBU operatives. They approached Minato's desk with military precision before removing their masks to reveal themselves as Shisui and Itachi.

"What did you discover?" Minato asked immediately, recognizing from their formal approach that they carried significant intelligence.

"Our investigation has confirmed that Hanzo is no longer the leader of the Hidden Rain Village," Shisui reported with characteristic directness. "The current ruler calls himself Pain."

"Pain?" Both Minato and Jiraiya exchanged meaningful glances. Neither had encountered this name in any previous intelligence reports, making the identity completely unknown to them.

"This Pain has proclaimed himself a god within the Rain Village," Itachi added, his voice carrying the professional detachment required for such briefings. "According to local sources, Hanzo of the Salamander has already been 'judged' and executed by this new leader."

"So it was Nagato after all," Minato murmured, though the confirmation brought no satisfaction. The development aligned perfectly with his predictions about Nagato's character and motivations—someone with his sense of justice and personal history would never allow Hanzo's role in Yahiko's death to go unpunished.

"However," Itachi continued with his report, "when we reached the central administrative tower of the Rain Village, we found it completely abandoned except for several sealed chambers."

"These containment units matched the descriptions provided by our reconnaissance teams from previous missions," he explained. "The design and construction suggested they had been used for storing or transporting something valuable."

"The enemy had clearly evacuated the area well before our arrival," Shisui concluded. "Given the obvious preparation for our investigation, we decided not to extend our presence in Rain Village territory beyond what was absolutely necessary."

"You made the right decision," Minato acknowledged with approval. "Your intelligence gathering was excellent work."

He turned his attention specifically to Itachi, his expression becoming more serious. "Don't report to ANBU duties today. Tomorrow, I'm assigning Sasuke to accompany an investigation team for a mission outside the village."

The order was connected to recent intelligence that had reached Minato's attention through multiple channels. Reports indicated that the Third Tsuchikage of Iwagakure had been establishing secret communications with a mysterious mercenary organization whose members wore distinctive black robes decorated with red cloud patterns.

These mercenaries were almost certainly connected to Nagato's group, representing a disturbing development in the political landscape of the ninja world. Minato's primary concern was that Konoha's demonstrated power had become so overwhelming that other villages felt compelled to seek alternative methods of opposition.

Iwagakure lacked the courage to directly challenge Konoha through conventional means, but they could easily provide covert support to forces like Nagato's organization. Such assistance might include intelligence sharing, supply routes, or simply failing to report suspicious activities that would help Nagato evade Konoha's tracking efforts.

The strategy was politically sophisticated—as long as Konoha couldn't produce irrefutable evidence of Iwagakure's involvement, any accusations would appear to be paranoid overreach by a dominant power. Worse, such accusations might actually drive other major villages to form a defensive alliance against Konoha.

This represented exactly the kind of political isolation that Nagato's group sought to create. By ensuring that the five great nations remained divided and suspicious of each other, they could operate with greater freedom while keeping Konoha perpetually on the defensive.

With Minato's current level of power, their escape during the previous confrontation shouldn't have been possible under normal circumstances. However, the political constraints of village leadership had prevented him from pursuing them with the full extent of his capabilities.

"Yes, sir," Itachi responded formally, though careful observers might have noticed a momentary flicker of hesitation in his eyes.

However, when memories of the devastating casualties from Nagato's assault several months earlier surfaced in his mind, his resolve strengthened visibly. Whatever personal doubts he might harbor about the risks to his younger brother, the necessity of preventing future tragedies provided sufficient motivation to proceed.

Several days later, in the newly constructed training grounds located behind Konoha's mountainous backdrop, the sound of intensive instruction echoed across the reformed landscape.

The massive destruction caused by Nagato's techniques had fundamentally altered the village's geography, forcing the leadership to completely reimagine the use of available space. Rather than simply restoring the original terrain, they had chosen to convert portions of the transformed area into expanded residential districts and specialized training facilities.

"Why did you drag me all the way out here, you Ero-Sannin?" Naruto complained, though his curiosity was evident as he examined the impressive new training ground that surrounded them.

"How many times do I have to tell you," Jiraiya responded with exaggerated indignation, delivering a light but pointed tap to Naruto's head, "you should address me as Master Jiraiya, or show proper respect by calling me the Great Toad Sage!"

"Ero-Sannin," Naruto retorted stubbornly, rubbing his head but refusing to modify his preferred terminology despite the physical correction.

After several minutes of their familiar banter, Jiraiya's expression grew more serious as he focused on the purpose of their visit to this remote location.

"Boy, do you remember what Minato and I explained to you about your significance?" he asked, his voice carrying unusual gravity.

"You represent the young person that the Great Toad Sage predicted would emerge in this generation—someone whose choices will fundamentally influence the future of the entire ninja world."

Jiraiya's eyes fixed on Naruto with increasing intensity. "That means your current casual approach to training is no longer acceptable. Starting today, I'm going to implement a training regimen that will push you far beyond anything you've experienced before."

While Naruto had little interest in abstract concepts like being a prophesied child of destiny, the promise of intensive training under one of the legendary Sannin immediately captured his attention. His expression brightened with genuine excitement as he processed the implications.

He understood that despite Jiraiya's eccentric personality and questionable personal habits, his combat abilities and teaching expertise were absolutely unquestionable. After all, this was the man who had trained his father—the ninja now revered throughout the world as the God of Ninja.

"Finally!" Naruto exclaimed, his frustration with recent mundane missions transforming into anticipation for the challenges ahead. "I've been waiting for real training like this!"

As teacher and student prepared to begin their intensive regimen, neither could fully anticipate how dramatically this training would alter not just Naruto's capabilities, but the entire trajectory of the conflicts yet to come.
