Chapter 851 - Chapter 851: The Only Candidate

"Tch," Naruto muttered under his breath, crossing his arms defiantly and turning his face away from his father's steady gaze. The sound of frustration escaped him despite his best efforts to maintain composure.

While he didn't fully grasp all the nuances of Minato's detailed explanation about leadership qualities and tactical judgment, he understood the core message well enough. Throughout their childhood, Chiharu had consistently demonstrated superior analytical skills and strategic thinking. During their time at the Ninja Academy, Shikamaru had been universally recognized as the most intellectually gifted student in their class. And Shin, being two years their senior with additional experience and maturity, naturally possessed advantages that came with age and training.

Naruto could reluctantly accept these three individuals receiving promotion ahead of him—their qualifications, while frustrating to acknowledge, were undeniably legitimate.

What truly gnawed at him, however, was seeing Sasuke's name on that list. His longtime rival had achieved Chunin rank before him, and that reality stung more than he cared to admit.

As if drawn by some magnetic force, Naruto's eyes found Sasuke's across the room. The Uchiha was making no effort to hide his satisfaction, his lips curved in the faintest suggestion of a smirk that somehow managed to convey volumes about his sense of victory. The look in Sasuke's dark eyes seemed to declare his superiority without need for words, a silent proclamation that he had once again proven himself the better of the two.

Naruto's jaw clenched involuntarily as he fought to contain his competitive frustration. In that moment, he made a fierce internal vow—no matter what it took, he would pass the next Chunin Examination with flying colors. The next time their abilities were tested, he would be the one wearing a satisfied expression.

According to established tradition, Chunin Examinations were typically held twice per year, with approximately six months between testing periods. Given that Konoha's reconstruction had consumed more than four months, and most village operations had only recently returned to normal functioning, the next examination would likely be delayed even further. This meant Naruto would have to wait even longer for his chance at redemption.

Observing his son's internal struggle, Minato felt a mixture of paternal concern and quiet pride. While Naruto's disappointment was evident, the fact that he had managed to control his initial outburst and avoid creating a scene demonstrated significant personal growth. The impulsive boy who might have shouted and argued months earlier had matured into someone capable of processing disappointment with greater dignity.

"Would the newly promoted Chunin please step forward to receive your official qualification documents," Minato announced formally, his voice carrying the ceremonial weight appropriate for such an important moment.

Shikamaru approached with his characteristic casual demeanor, accepting his credentials with a slight nod that suggested he had expected this outcome. Shin moved with the composed confidence of someone whose seniority had made promotion almost inevitable. Chiharu stepped forward with graceful dignity, her expression reflecting satisfaction but no surprise at her advancement.

Sasuke was the final candidate to approach the Hokage's desk. His entire focus centered on the official document being placed in his hands—the tangible proof of his achievement and superiority. In his concentration on this moment of triumph, he failed to notice the subtle shift in Minato's expression, the hint of solemnity and reluctant acceptance that flickered across the Fourth Hokage's features as he handed over the credentials.

After the ceremony concluded and the newly promoted Chunin had been formally recognized, the assembled group dispersed from the Hokage building. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the rebuilt village streets as each individual went their separate way.

"Chiharu, I'll come with you to the equipment department to get your new gear," Naruto offered, his voice carefully controlled but unable to completely hide his underlying disappointment. He watched as Shikamaru and Sasuke headed toward the military supply office to collect their official Chunin vests, the visible symbols of their new rank.

Despite his efforts to appear supportive, it was obvious that Naruto was still struggling with his sense of failure and exclusion from the promotion list.

Chiharu shook her head gently, her perceptive nature immediately recognizing her brother's emotional state. "There's no rush for that. I don't have any missions assigned yet, so the equipment can wait."

Deliberately steering the conversation away from the painful topic of promotions, she added with forced cheerfulness, "Didn't Teuchi-san promise you that special ramen? We should go enjoy it while it's still fresh."

"But..." Naruto's protest lacked conviction, his reluctance obvious.

"Come on," Chiharu insisted, taking his hand and gently pulling him in the direction of Ichiraku Ramen. "Let's not waste this opportunity."

The familiar warmth and welcoming atmosphere of Ichiraku Ramen provided a stark contrast to the formal tension of the Hokage's office. The newly rebuilt restaurant maintained all the charm of its predecessor while offering improved comfort and space for customers.

"It really doesn't matter, Naruto," Ayame said kindly, her gentle smile radiating genuine compassion as she set down their order. "You didn't fail in any meaningful way today. The Hokage and village leadership simply had different considerations in their decision-making process. There's absolutely no reason for you to be discouraged."

Noticing that Naruto remained uncharacteristically quiet, his usual boisterous energy notably absent, Ayame tried a different approach. "Besides, knowing you, this setback won't keep you down for long. You're not the type to give up easily."

Her words seemed to strike a chord. Naruto suddenly straightened in his seat, his characteristic determination reasserting itself. "You're absolutely right! Next time, I'll definitely pass the Chunin Exam without any problems!"

"That's the spirit," Ayame responded with approval, nodding encouragingly.

"To be honest, watching your preliminary match was absolutely thrilling," she continued, her eyes lighting up with genuine admiration. "I couldn't believe how incredibly skilled you've become. When did you develop such amazing abilities?"

"Ah, that's..." Naruto scratched the back of his head self-consciously, his cheeks reddening with modest embarrassment.

"It really was spectacular to watch," Ayame pressed on with enthusiasm. "After all, you're the Fourth Hokage's son! Everyone expects great things from you."

At the mention of his parentage, Naruto's expression shifted subtly. While most people would consider being the Hokage's child an advantage, for Naruto it sometimes felt more like a burden—a constant standard against which he was measured and often found wanting.

"Well, well, I should have known I'd find you two here."

The familiar voice interrupted their conversation, causing both siblings to turn toward the restaurant's entrance. A warm smile spread across their faces as they recognized their unexpected visitor.

"Iruka-sensei!" both Naruto and Chiharu exclaimed simultaneously, immediately rising from their seats out of respect.

Despite having graduated from the Ninja Academy many months earlier, they maintained deep appreciation for their former instructor. Iruka had been more than just a teacher during their academic years—he had been a mentor, protector, and surrogate father figure during some of their most formative experiences.

"Please, sit down," Iruka said warmly, gesturing for them to resume their meal. "I heard about the promotion ceremony today. Congratulations on your advancement, Chiharu."

"Thank you, Iruka-sensei," Chiharu replied graciously.

Iruka's attention turned to Naruto, his expression softening with understanding. "And don't look so dejected, Naruto. Your time will come soon enough. Sometimes the path to success requires patience and persistence."

Meanwhile, across the village, Sasuke made his way home with quick, excited steps, his new Chunin vest and qualification documents clutched securely in his hands. Despite his usual efforts to maintain an air of cool indifference, he couldn't entirely suppress the satisfaction that came with this achievement.

"Mom, I'm home," he called out as he entered the familiar entrance of the Uchiha compound, his voice carrying a note of barely contained excitement.

"Welcome back, dear," came Mikoto's warm response from the kitchen, followed by the sound of water running and dishes being cleaned.

A few moments later, she emerged from the kitchen, drying her hands on her apron while wearing the gentle smile that had always made Sasuke feel safe and loved. At the same time, footsteps from an adjacent room announced the approach of Fugaku and Itachi, both of whom had apparently been waiting for his return.

Sasuke felt a momentary surprise at finding both his usually busy father and brother present at home during what would normally be working hours. Their simultaneous presence suggested that they had deliberately arranged to be here for this moment.

"Father, brother," he acknowledged respectfully, offering them formal nods.

"Mm," Fugaku responded with his characteristic reserve, but there was something different in his expression—a subtle warmth that was rarely visible.

Itachi approached with his typical gentle demeanor, his face showing genuine pleasure and pride. "Congratulations, Sasuke. You've earned the rank of Chunin."

The evidence was impossible to miss—Sasuke's possession of the official vest and credentials made his success abundantly clear even without verbal confirmation.

"Thank you," Sasuke replied, allowing his carefully maintained emotional barriers to lower slightly in the presence of his family. Only here, surrounded by those who truly knew him, did he permit himself to display genuine happiness rather than calculated indifference.

His eyes turned expectantly toward Fugaku, hoping for some sign of paternal approval that had always seemed just beyond his reach.

"Well done," Fugaku said simply, stepping closer to his younger son. "You've proven yourself worthy of being my heir."

Then, in a gesture that completely stunned Sasuke, Fugaku reached out and gently ruffled his hair—a display of paternal affection that he had never experienced before in his eleven years of life.

For a moment, Sasuke froze completely, uncertain how to process this unprecedented show of warmth from his typically stern and distant father. Gradually, a faint blush colored his cheeks, and for those few seconds, he looked exactly like what he was—a young boy receiving long-awaited approval from the parent he most wanted to impress.

"You must be exhausted after such an important day," Mikoto observed with maternal concern. "Dinner will be ready shortly. Just give me a few more minutes."

"I'm finished, thank you for the meal," Sasuke announced formally after they had eaten, rising from his place at the table with practiced politeness. "Mother, Father, Brother, I'm going out to train now."

This after-dinner training routine had been Sasuke's consistent practice for years, his dedication to improvement unwavering regardless of circumstances or achievements.

"You don't have any missions scheduled for the next few days," Mikoto said, a note of maternal concern creeping into her voice. "Perhaps you could take a brief rest from your training?"

Sasuke shook his head with determined conviction. "Training can never be neglected, no matter what rank I achieve."

With that declaration, he quickly departed the house, leaving his family seated around the dinner table in contemplative silence.

After Sasuke's departure, the atmosphere in the Uchiha household grew noticeably heavier. Mikoto's expression gradually darkened with worry, her maternal instincts clearly troubled by concerns she couldn't voice directly. Fugaku and Itachi exhibited similar shifts in mood, their earlier celebration replaced by grim contemplation.

"Mother..." Itachi began gently, recognizing his mother's distress and wanting to offer comfort, but Fugaku's voice cut through his attempt at consolation.

"I understand your concerns about Sasuke's future," Fugaku said heavily, his tone carrying the weight of difficult decisions and unavoidable realities. "But we have no choice in this matter."

His eyes held a combination of paternal love and tactical necessity as he continued. "He carries the bloodline of the Uchiha clan. He is my son and heir. Eventually, he will have to shoulder the responsibilities that come with that inheritance."

Fugaku's expression grew darker as he posed a rhetorical question that carried devastating implications. "You don't want to see a repeat of what happened a few months ago, do you?"

The reference to Nagato's assault and the massive casualties it had inflicted sent a visible shudder through Mikoto. She nodded reluctantly, her maternal fears warring with her understanding of larger necessities.

"Before we can completely eliminate the enemy forces that threaten our village and our world," Fugaku continued in a voice heavy with foreboding, "we must prepare for multiple contingencies. We need to understand their true objectives, their ultimate goals, and the extent of their capabilities."

His gaze shifted meaningfully to Itachi, emphasizing the burden that both his sons would be expected to bear.

"Currently, only these two brothers possess the potential to meet the conditions necessary for such dangerous infiltration and intelligence gathering," Fugaku stated with grim finality. "Sasuke is Itachi's only sibling and our son. We must have faith in his abilities and his strength, even as we acknowledge the terrible risks he will face."

The unspoken implications hung heavy in the air—whatever mission or role the Uchiha leadership had in mind for Sasuke would likely place him in extraordinary danger, but the survival of the village might well depend on his success.
