Half a year later, the main gates of Konoha appeared before Team Shisui as they returned from their latest mission.
"Finally home," Chiharu sighed with evident relief, slipping off her travel-worn backpack as they passed through the massive village entrance.
It had been nearly a year since their graduation from the Ninja Academy—a year marked by significant growth for all of them. Perhaps the most dramatic transformation had occurred in Chiharu herself. Though only eight years old, her height had nearly caught up to her eleven-year-old brother Naruto, showcasing the accelerated development common among shinobi children with exceptional potential.
"Shisui-sensei," Naruto declared without preamble as they walked, "I must participate in the upcoming Chūnin Exams. Dattebayo"
The biannual Chūnin Exams were scheduled to commence in approximately one month, and Naruto had been fixated on the opportunity for advancement since learning of the timing. Several months prior, he had made the same request, but Shisui had firmly declined on the grounds that their practical experience was insufficient despite completing several missions.
The past six months, however, had changed that calculus considerably. The team had undertaken numerous assignments of increasing complexity, gradually building the field experience necessary for consideration.
"Alright," Shisui agreed with a thoughtful nod, his eyes scanning each of his students in turn. Unlike his previous refusal, this time he saw no reason to object.
In truth, all three genin under his supervision had developed remarkably. Shin, who had joined their team already possessing skills beyond typical genin level, had refined his abilities further under Shisui's guidance. Meanwhile, both Naruto and Chiharu, benefiting from personal instruction from the Fourth Hokage himself, had demonstrated consistent and impressive progress.
"Please register my brother and me for the exams, Shisui-sensei," Chiharu requested with a polite smile. She had always supported Naruto's ambitions, recognizing both his potential and his need for acknowledgment.
"I hate to admit it," Shin added with uncharacteristic sheepishness, "but most of my Academy classmates achieved Chūnin rank long ago. I can't afford to fall further behind."
This rare display of personal motivation from the typically reserved Shin affirmed what Shisui had observed—his time with Team Shisui had begun to erode some of the emotional conditioning Danzō had instilled in him.
"Since everyone's in agreement," Shisui concluded with an approving smile, "we'll dedicate the coming month to specialized preparation for the exams. I'll personally submit the mission report to the Hokage today."
He formed a hand seal and added, "You're dismissed for the day. Rest well."
With that final instruction, Shisui's form shimmered and vanished so swiftly that even his observant students couldn't track his movement. His mastery of the Body Flicker Technique remained unparalleled in Konoha, earning him the moniker "Shisui of the Body Flicker" throughout the shinobi world.
"Perfect timing!" Naruto exclaimed, his energy undimmed despite the long journey home. His blue eyes lit up as he turned toward the village center. "Come on, Chiharu. Your big brother's treating you to Ichiraku Ramen!"
Chiharu's brow furrowed slightly at the suggestion. "Shouldn't we report home first? Mom will be upset if she learns we returned to the village and went elsewhere before seeing her."
"It won't take long," Naruto insisted with the casual dismissal of potential consequences that characterized much of his decision-making. He turned to their remaining teammate. "Shin, want to join us?"
"I have other matters to attend to," Shin declined with a brief wave before departing in the opposite direction.
"His loss," Naruto shrugged, grabbing Chiharu's hand and tugging her toward the heart of the village, his mind already filled with thoughts of Teuchi's signature miso chashu ramen.
As the siblings navigated the familiar streets of Konoha, a voice called out from behind them.
"Hey! Aren't those the Namikaze kids?"
Turning at the familiar voice, they spotted Kiba Inuzuka approaching with his teammates in tow.
"It's you guys," Naruto acknowledged, recognizing their former Academy classmates.
"Woof! Woof!" barked the small white puppy perched atop Kiba's head, its tail wagging excitedly at the sight of familiar faces.
"Akamaru has grown so much," Chiharu observed with delight. The ninken immediately leaped from Kiba's head into her welcoming arms, licking her face affectionately as she giggled.
"What brings you all out together?" she asked, glancing at the trio before her—Kiba with his distinctive red facial markings, Shino Aburame in his high-collared coat and dark glasses, and the shy Hinata Hyūga hovering slightly behind her more assertive teammates.
"Chōji won some kind of prize at the barbecue restaurant yesterday," Kiba explained with a casual shrug. "He's invited all the rookies from our year for an all-you-can-eat feast."
"Wait, what?" Naruto's expression shifted to one of disbelief. "Chōji is actually sharing food with other people? That doesn't sound right."
Kiba chuckled at Naruto's reaction. "It's not exactly sharing by choice. The prize Chōji won allows the recipient to bring as many friends as they want for unlimited food—all expenses covered by the restaurant. There's no restriction on the number of people or quantity of food."
Identical expressions of regret crossed both Namikaze siblings' faces as they realized what they had nearly missed.
"In that case," Chiharu remarked with a small laugh, "I fear the restaurant owner may deeply regret offering such a promotion after today."
"No doubt," Kiba agreed with a toothy grin. "Your mom mentioned you were away on a mission when I ran into her last week. Looks like you've got perfect timing."
His expression grew more earnest as he continued, "We've hardly seen each other since graduation. This is a rare chance for everyone to catch up. You should definitely come along."
The invitation was genuine—Chiharu had always been well-liked among their peers during their Academy days, able to form connections across the various social groups that naturally developed among the students.
"I'd love to," she agreed without hesitation before turning expectantly to her brother. "Let's go, Naruto."
Naruto's eyes narrowed skeptically. "But we were heading to Ichiraku. I've been dreaming about their ramen for weeks!"
"We can go there anytime," Chiharu countered, her large eyes conveying silent persuasion. "But how often do we get to gather with everyone from our class?"
"Sasuke Uchiha is also attending," Shino interjected quietly, his voice barely audible behind his high collar but his words calculated for maximum impact.
"Sasuke's going?" Naruto's skepticism immediately transformed into surprise. Based on his rivalry-fueled understanding of the Uchiha's personality, Sasuke typically avoided social gatherings, dismissing them as wastes of time that could be better spent training.
"Since Sasuke's already there, we should definitely join them," Chiharu declared, seizing her brother's arm with a gentle but insistent grip. The implicit challenge in her tone wasn't lost on Naruto—if his rival could take time from training for this event, how could he do any less?
Finding himself without a compelling counterargument, Naruto could only nod in reluctant agreement.
"Yes!" Chiharu exclaimed triumphantly, as though she'd won a significant victory. In many ways, successfully redirecting her headstrong brother's intentions counted as exactly that.
"Let's go then," she said cheerfully, keeping one arm around Akamaru while linking her other with Hinata's. The Hyūga heiress startled slightly at the contact, her pale cheeks flushing pink.
Hinata cast a furtive glance toward Naruto, but he remained oblivious to her attention, already engaged in animated conversation with Kiba as they set off toward the restaurant. Her blush deepened slightly before she allowed herself to be guided along by the enthusiastic Chiharu.
As the group made their way through Konoha's bustling streets, the atmosphere among them lightened considerably. Despite their different team assignments and varied missions over the past year, the shared foundation of their Academy days provided common ground that quickly rekindled their former camaraderie.
Upon reaching the barbecue restaurant—one of Konoha's more upscale establishments, known for its premium cuts of meat and sophisticated ambiance—they were greeted by the sounds of enthusiastic eating before they even entered the private room reserved for their gathering.
"Another serving, please!" a muffled voice called out between obvious chewing sounds.
The door to the private dining area slid open, revealing a young waiter emerging with visible perspiration on his brow, his expression a mixture of professional courtesy and mounting concern as he hurried toward the kitchen with another order.
"I suspect the owner will think twice before offering such a promotion again," Chiharu observed with amusement as they approached the entrance.
Inside the spacious room, they found their former classmates gathered around a large table dominated by several tabletop grills. The center of attention was unmistakably Chōji Akimichi, who sat surrounded by plates both empty and full, methodically grilling and consuming meat with the focused dedication of an artisan practicing their craft.
The others present—Ino Yamanaka, Sakura Haruno, Shikamaru Nara, and Sasuke Uchiha—displayed varying degrees of amazement and resignation at their companion's appetite. While Ino and Sakura had positioned themselves on either side of Sasuke, competing for his attention despite his evident disinterest, Shikamaru lounged with characteristic lethargy, occasionally muttering something that sounded suspiciously like "what a drag" when Chōji requested his assistance in reaching another plate.
It was Sasuke who first noticed the new arrivals. His dark eyes flicked toward the doorway, immediately locking onto Naruto with an expression that transformed from surprise to something resembling satisfaction. The corner of his mouth curved upward into what might have been a smirk on anyone else's face.
"So you've finally returned," he stated, his tone conveying more than his sparse words—a mixture of acknowledgment and challenge that had characterized their relationship since their earliest Academy days.
The underlying message was clear to both of them: their competition could now resume in earnest, with the upcoming Chūnin Exams providing the perfect stage for determining which of them had grown stronger during their time apart.
