Chapter 20 - A mistake can be forgiven with a heartfelt apology

He followed me downstairs, then knelt before me, crying—probably thinking his tears would soften me and make me let this go.

"You better give up that idea, because it's never going to work. Do you think I'll let it slide every time you mess up just because you cry for a few minutes? Even if you cried all day, I'd still kill this little demon of yours," I said coldly, lifting the puppy by the scruff of its neck.

"You're still going to kill it even if it makes me sad?" he asked, sobbing.

"Yes. But don't worry—I'll make it less painful, for your sake," I replied, a smile stretching across my face.

"If you dare kill my puppy, I'll never speak to you again in this lifetime! I'll leave with Xiao Zhi and never come back," he threatened.

"Do you need help packing?" I asked sweetly. "I can call Wang Ma to assist. And don't worry, I won't turn your room into my BL collection room. I know you'll come running back as soon as he dumps you, so your bed will still be here when that happens."

I gently brushed the puppy's fur with the edge of the knife.

"Don't worry, baobei. I'll never leave you—not in this lifetime. I plan to marry you and make you mine forever," he said with confidence, planting a peck on Wen Zhin's cheek.

"Chhhh." I sighed, ignoring him and his bragging.

"Wait—did you just say you'd marry him? …Hahahaha!" I burst into laughter. Out of all the guys Wen Zhin had dated, he was the first one to bring up marriage. They all promised forever, swore they'd never leave him, but not a single one ever mentioned marriage.

"Zhao Zhao, can you stop laughing? I'm serious. I'm going to marry him and spend my whole life with him," he said, pouting—clearly hurt that I wasn't taking him seriously, just like Zha Zha always does.

"Let her be," Wen Zhin cut in. "If I were her, I'd stop laughing and go clean that landfill she calls a room." He patted Xiao Zhi while giving me a sharp side-eye.

"I dare you to say that again," I said, standing up. The smile on my face vanished, replaced by a stern look.

He didn't repeat it—he knew better. If he did, he'd be met with a hot slap.

"LING ZHAO!!!!"

[Damn! When did she get here? This isn't fair. She's definitely going to take his side—even though it's his puppy that ruined my stuff and tore my room apart.] I thought, a pang of sadness creeping in.

"Why are you threatening the baby? You'll make him cry," Aunt Wen said as she rushed to comfort Wen Zhin.

"But Aunt Wen, this isn't fair! It's his puppy that destroyed everything in my room, and he's the one giving me attitude. And now you're scolding me too? Is it because he's your best friend's son? Does that make him untouchable? Am I not your best friend's child too? Or do you assume that just because I'm the leader of a gang, I don't have emotions?" I said, my voice trembling, eyes brimming with tears.

Then I stormed out of the house.

[Did I let my emotions take control again?] I wondered.[With my parents' death anniversary coming up, it's no wonder I'm so unstable right now...]

My thoughts were cut short by a phone call.

"Guess what? I just saw Wangxiao at Penthouse. You better get your ass here or you'll miss your chance!" her voice buzzed with excitement.

I hung up immediately and headed to the club.

When I arrived, I saw them—sitting there like an old married couple. I was just about to walk over to them when someone sat down beside them…

…someone who made my blood boil.
