Human defenses were, of course, never about holding the ground. If the Insect Race tried to charge in through these flat areas, it would be suicidal. The paths left open were key areas under heavy crossfire coverage. After a few attempts and many futile sacrifices, the Insect Race continued methodically to chip away at these firepower points.
In contrast, it was often the humans who launched assaults through these routes.
