Chapter 4324: Becoming the Prey
With two waves of Purple Gold light upon him, Lin Moyu had become the brightest figure in the crowd. Nearly everyone's gaze zeroed in on him.
He calmly received the second Purple Gold Fruit, his expression unchanging. To him, the Purple Gold Fruit was far inferior to the Chaos Fruit of which he had plenty. What difference could merely two more fruits make?
Xiao Peng felt nothing either.
But beside him, City Lord Pang Qi's heart surged with envy.
"Daoist Lin, you were chosen twice. Such fortune is truly rare!"
Lin Moyu asked lightly, "Has anyone before received two?"
"Yes," Pang Qi nodded. "But the chances are tiny. Once, a man even obtained three at once but it's only happened a single time."
Lin Moyu gave a faint smile.
"Then it seems my luck is good."
But inwardly, his thoughts stirred.
Is it really luck?
From what he discerned about the hidden runes in the fighting platforms, the Purple Gold Phoenix was most likely judging potential. Fruits were granted accordingly.
Now, with the whole of Fallen Feather World covered in the radiance of the Divine Phoenix, Lin Moyu guessed its power was actively analyzing everyone's potential, choosing not just who would receive, but how many.
He did not know his own potential's true limit but he had the distinct feeling he might break records.
And indeed, unless he immediately fled Fallen Feather World, the Purple Gold Fruits might keep flying into his hands.
So be it. Let's see how many I can draw, he thought.
He stored the two fruits away. With the next clear phoenix cry, as he predicted, a third glow lit his body.
Gasps filled the plaza.
"A third fruit?!"
"Impossible three in a row?"
"How can his luck be so outrageous?"
Envy, shock, disbelief swirled, but none dared to question the Phoenix. Who among them would dispute the will of a Chaos Perfection being?
The third fruit drifted down into Lin Moyu's steady palm. He only chuckled and closed his hand.
Pang Qi's eyes bulged.
"Daoist Lin, your fortune is beyond words."
"Perhaps," Lin Moyu said idly, smiling faintly.
His cryptic response left Pang Qi uneasy, sensing some deeper meaning he could not grasp.
Lin Moyu then asked aloud, almost playfully:
"Tell me, has anyone ever received four fruits?"
Pang Qi shook his head at once.
"Never heard of such a thing."
Lin Moyu grinned.
"Then there soon will be."
The Phoenix's next cry rang, and sure enough, a fourth light engulfed him.
This time, the murmurs broke into open uproar.
"Four fruits impossible!"
"No mere luck could explain this. He must know some method!"
"Method? You accuse him of cheating before the Purple Gold Phoenix? Preposterous! No one can cheat its eyes!"
Analytical minds moved in the crowd. Even as they whispered, Lin Moyu himself confirmed his theory: the Divine Phoenix was selecting purely by latent potential.
And his own, apparently, was immense.
The fourth fruit landed neatly in his grasp.
Pang Qi's breath caught. Only now did he realize Lin Moyu's "joke" had never been a joke.
And Lin Moyu stood straight, unbothered.
"The fifth will be mine as well."
Pang Qi twitched, lips parting then closing soundlessly. He had no words.
Lin Moyu turned his head slightly.
"City Lord, were you about to ask how I am doing this?"
Pang Qi stiffened. Instinct said yes. Reverence said no. He quickly shook his head.
"The Purple Gold Phoenix is always fair… and impartial."
Lin Moyu's smile sharpened.
"Indeed. Very fair. Everyone abides by the same unseen law. It is not revealed, yet it governs all. Where is the unfairness in that?"
Is greater potential unfairness? he mused. If so, then fairness in the world had never existed. Some are born into Chaos Realm while others claw their way up from mortal birth was that fairness?
No. There was only relative fairness, never true equality.
The Phoenix's cry resounded again. The fifth fruit flew into his hands.
Now the crowd was utterly silent.
Five fruits.
The believers' conviction crumbled into awe, fear, and calculation. Lin Moyu was no longer just a recipient he was an anomaly, living proof of some hidden law. They began to stare at him as at a treasure.
If they could pry from him the secret of how to be chosen endless Purple Gold Fruits could be theirs.
Power surged greedily in a thousand hearts.
Pang Qi's face darkened with realization: Lin Moyu had become a target. A prey.
Lin Moyu laughed softly, holding up the fifth fruit.
"Daoist Pang I fear I've attracted unwanted attention."
Pang Qi admitted gravely, "Yes. But here in Fallen Feather World, no one dares act against you."
Lin Moyu's eyes twinkled.
"But I won't remain here forever. When I leave, storms will follow. Alone, I may not withstand the siege. Tell me, City Lord… do you have any means to lend me aid?"
He spoke lightly, but the implication was heavy.
In truth, Lin Moyu had countless methods to resolve such trouble. But he was curious. He wanted to test Pang Qi and perhaps barter with him.
Pang Qi's mind churned. For Lin Moyu to offer such words meant opportunity. Exchanging aid for Purple Gold Fruit this was plainly the trade.
And just as Pang Qi's thoughts stewed, a sixth cry tore the air.
The sixth glow blazed over Lin Moyu's body.
Another fruit descended into his palm.
Now, greed, envy, hatred, and reverence fused in the crowd's eyes. Some looked at him as enemy. Some, as prey fattened for slaughter.
Lin Moyu smirked. He knew exactly the tide that rose around him.
Six fruits. Enough that many would kill without hesitation.
And amid it all, he simply stood calm, waiting, playing a game.
Around him, predators gathered.
But truly
it was they who had become his prey.
