The ground still smoldered. Corpses — or what remained of them — lay scattered across the desecrated forest battlefield. The Orc Chieftain's body had long since turned cold, and Alexander stood silently at the edge of the destroyed war camp, now surrounded by reanimated skeletons acting as sentries. Their hollow eyes glowed a faint crimson, watching the darkness beyond the trees.
He took a breath and turned toward the ruins that loomed just beyond the shattered camp. Their ancient stone was covered in thick ivy, cracked and gnarled as though it too had suffered some war long ago.
And then he felt it again.
The pulse.
It wasn't pain, but neither was it comforting. It was like something whispering to the back of his mind, a persistent hum of dark energy — familiar and terrifying.
He stepped closer. As he entered the overgrown courtyard of the ruins, he saw it: a massive black altar in the shape of a skull surrounded by jagged obsidian spires. The words carved into it were in an ancient necrotic tongue… but somehow, Alexander understood them:
> "From bone and death, a throne shall rise."
"All shall kneel beneath the Dark Sovereign's hand."
He placed his palm on the cold surface. A rush of arcane information flooded his mind — diagrams, rituals, blueprints for undead infrastructure, and something else…
[Undead Necro Dark Altar Discovered.]
– Unlocking Infrastructure Management.
– Gained: Necro Workshop (Lv. 1)
– Gained: Grave Binding (Lv. 1)
– Gained: Dark Conduit Spell (Unstable)
Alexander staggered back, eyes wide.
A sudden notification appeared.
> [New Spell Unlocked — "Dark Conduit"]
Channel dark essence from the environment to rapidly accelerate spell learning or enhance undead. Unstable when overused.
Mana Cost: 50 per use
He smirked. "This… changes everything."

Over the next few days, Alexander transformed the ruins into the beginnings of a dark fortress. His skeletons dug graves and repurposed ancient stone into battlements. Using "Grave Binding," he linked the bones of fallen enemies to specific graves, making them respawnable without a corpse.
Inside the Necro Workshop, he began his real work — mastering magic.
He dove into every ritual the altar had embedded in his mind. New spells, combinations, sacrificial magic — everything he'd never dreamed of learning this early.
Day 1 — Spell Creation Attempt:
With "Dark Conduit" pulsing in his chest, he drew a pentagram of dried blood across an altar and summoned ethereal flames into the air. He whispered the chant embedded in the ruins:
> "By marrow, bone, and shadow deep,
Bind the soul that will not sleep."
The flames twisted — wrong at first — but he corrected his cadence and pulled back the excess Mana. His control was growing.
[New Spell Created — "Soul Anchor"]
Anchor a destroyed undead's soul to a grave, allowing for automatic resurrection once per day.
Mana Cost: 35
Day 2 — Resistance Studies:
He began testing elemental resistance and weaknesses in his summons. Surprisingly, dark energy proved especially potent against spirits like the Specter. It allowed him to begin weaving hybrid spells — darkness mixed with null energy.
Day 3 — Forbidden Trials:
One incantation stood out: "Vein of Hunger." It drained the blood of fallen enemies and turned it into volatile energy. When cast, it erupted into a swirling mist that weakened living targets and empowered the undead.
He needed a test subject.
He didn't have to wait long.
---
That night, a scream echoed from the west — a human one.
Alexander dashed into the forest, flanked by two of his elite skeletons. There, amidst the twisted roots and moonlight, was a young woman in a torn cloak, cornered by what looked like a mutated elk — its antlers pulsing with black growths.
It had already mutated.
[Chaos-Touched Wildlife Detected — Minor Mutation Stage.]
The thing turned toward him and charged. Alexander whispered, "Soul Anchor," on one of his skeletons and then let fly a Shadow Bullet. It pierced the creature's side, slowing it, but not killing it.
The woman screamed again.
Alexander used "Vein of Hunger" — the mist exploded from the ground beneath the creature. It roared and staggered as its strength was drained.
The skeleton leaped, slicing down with its rusted sword. The beast fell.
"Are you hurt?" Alexander asked.
The girl, clearly shaken, shook her head. "N-No… I… I was tracking something. You—what was that thing?"
"A hint," he muttered. "Of what's coming."
He offered her his hand. "Name's Alexander."
She took it. "Liora."
He didn't smile. "Come with me. It's not safe out here anymore."
---
By the time they returned to the ruins, Alexander had made a decision.
Magic was no longer a tool — it was his lifeline. The Chaos Void wasn't waiting. And neither would he.
That night, he cast "Dark Conduit" again and again. The Mana cost was steep, but the gains were worth it.
He unlocked two more spells:
1. Shadow Grasp: Conjures skeletal hands to restrain enemies. (Mana: 25)
2. Death Pulse: Releases a shockwave of necrotic energy that harms the living and heals undead. (Mana: 40)
He stared at the dark ceiling of the ruins.
"I'm not strong enough yet," he muttered, "but I will be."
And in the shadows behind him, the altar pulsed.
