OUTSKIRTS OF BALCROFT
The night air is cool, and the fire warms Griselda and Kalani as they sit round the fire. Griselda sits close to the flames, lost in her thoughts while Kayden sits a little farther from them, back against a tree, his eyes scanning the forest surrounding them and glancing to Griselda once in a while.
Kalani feels her heart ache as she watches him. She has loved him for so long, but kept it a secret. She knows his heart belongs to Griselda, a love from their shared childhood. She feels bitter as she realises it's a love she can never compete with.
She gets up and walks over to him, a plate of food in her hands. "Here," she says softly, offering it to him. "I noticed you ate so little for during the meal earlier, you must be hungry."
Kayden takes the plate with a grateful nod.
"Thank you, Kalani. You're too kind." He says, taking a small bite, his eyes still on the fire, on Griselda's quiet form.
