I was just about to finish it off, dagger raised high, when the Subterranea's eyes suddenly snapped open. Twin yellow orbs glowed like molten suns, locking onto me with a predatory sharpness.

The serpent lunged without warning. Its jaws yawned wider than a carriage, venom-slick fangs crackling with arcs of lightning. I threw myself sideways as the ground erupted beneath me, dirt and stone raining through the air.
Edge darted in from the flank, sword flashing, but the blade only screeched uselessly against its violet scales. "It's too thick!" he cursed.
"Then aim for the weak spots!" I snapped, sprinting forward, daggers ready.
