Chapter 70 - Unfolding the truth

After the King's departure from the orphanage, Sarai returned to the store room and took another glance at the food items which still had the black crest evident on it; distinguishing it from the good ones.

She felt beads of sweat slowly run down her back as she remembered the King's words; of how the produce could contaminate anyone by changing them slowly.

She quickly explained to Dorathy all the king had said and the girl was just as surprised and terrified and they both decided to gather the produce and place them in a wain.

"We'd dispose of it in the woods. There, no human or light creature can easily find it" Sarai said to the girl who was standing beside her.

"Does it affect the humans as well?" Dorathy asked. Dorathy was also a light fairy and she was the only one who knew the kind of creature Sarai truly was. So she wasn't new to the supernatural and it's stark difference to the human world.

"I don't know dear. But it's better we don't take chances. You know we also play a part in making sure humans aren't involved in the current night and light creature clashes" Sarai responded as she mounted the horse and Dorathy climbed into the wain and they headed for the woods.

"Milord, where are we headed now?" Benjamin asked.

This time, the king and this right hand man were already a good distance away from the orphanage and Benjamin couldn't help but ask what the King's next plan was.

"The palace, we have a debutante ball to prepare for right?" The king said with a serious expression. But Benjamin was confused by the King's words because he knew very well that the king wasn't in a pleasant mood as there were pressing matters and the king suddenly bringing up the debutante ball was surprising.

"Yes milord. But what about the families, what are we going to do with them?" Benjamin asked.

"We watch and wait. If truly they returned to the witches and plan on using their powers to harm anyone, I give you permission to wipe them out" Sebastian explained.

Getting to the palace, Sebastian ordered that food items from the palace's food reserve be taken to the orphanage and it was done immediately.

In the Nolan home....

"Mother, you have to stop worrying. Papa and Mirabelle are fine, I'm sure of it" the eldest daughter of the Nolan home tried to coax her mother who was bothered about the fact that her husband and daughter were yet to return home.

Sir Thomas had arrived the Nolan home that morning to see Gabrielle and was also trying to assure Mrs Nolan of her husband and daughter's safety when they all heard a knock on the door.

Their heads turned towards the direction of the door and Mrs Nolan quickly said to her youngest child who was also seated in the living room "Kayden, check who is at the door".

The boy got up and walked towards the door. Opening it, he saw a man dressed nicely with a gentle smile on his face.

Kayden looked past the man's shoulder and noticed the carriage with which the man came with, it didn't look average.

"A letter from the crown" the man said as he handed Kayden the letter.

"From the crown?" Kayden questioned.

"Yes sire" the man answered before turning around to take his leave.

Kayden watched as the messenger mounted the carriage and began to ride away.

He walked back into the house and the expectant gaze from everyone quickly made him say "It's a letter from the palace".

Mrs. Nolan quickly stood up from where she was seated and took the letter from her son. Opening it, the first words she saw was "Only for Elizabeth Nolan's eyes".

She was about to read the letter for everyone but seeing the first words, she decided to read it herself.

"Mama is everything alright?" Gabrielle asked seeing the slightly scared expression on her mother's face.

"What's in the letter? Who wrote it? The king or papa?" Kayden curiously asked.

"It is from your father. He is fine and Mirabelle is fine also but the king wants them to remain in the palace for a while" Mrs. Nolan said, only revealing some parts of the letter.

"Why though?" Sir Thomas asked this time.

"I do not have any idea why. But I'm glad they are both fine" Mrs. Nolan said, still concealing some contents of the letter.

She held the letter tightly and went into her room. Finally alone, she read the letter once again and she was disheartened.

Nolan had explained in the letter all the king had told him about Mirabelle and why the king wanted them to remain in the palace for a while.

Mrs. Nolan was surprised with how everything had turned out. She knew Mirabelle wasn't an ordinary girl since birth but she had never expected that the girl might actually pose a threat to the kingdom one day.
