The waystation sat like a forgotten sentence between two paragraphs of desert: three leaning pines and a low sweep of stone where wagons once moored. Dust had turned to powder on the benches; a half-rotted sign hung by one rusty nail, its paint long since flaked into the wind. Light tilted across the place like an old page being turned.
