Chapter 22 - Unwelcome Intrusions

Caleb

As the plans for the ceremony solidified, I turned my attention back to Ava. "What will you wear for the ceremony tonight?" I asked, realizing the importance of her appearance for this significant event.

Ava's expression shifted slightly, a mix of embarrassment and resignation. "I don't have much, Caleb. My wardrobe is pretty sparse. I didn't bring anything that would be suitable for a ceremony like this."

I frowned, realizing the oversight.

"That's not a problem," I said quickly. "We'll make sure you have everything you need." I paused, thinking for a moment.

"I'll have Lily take you shopping. She has a good eye for these things."

Just as I was about to call for Lily, she appeared at the doorway, almost as if she sensed she was needed.

"Yes, Alpha?" she said, her eyes flicking between Ava and me.

"Lily, could you take Ava shopping? She needs something appropriate for the ceremony tonight," I instructed.

Lily's eyes narrowed slightly, and she put her hands on her hips.

"Alpha, with all due respect, as her husband, you should take her shopping yourself. It's important for both of you to be involved, and besides, you two should match."

I opened my mouth to protest, but Lily's stern expression stopped me.

"Lily, I—"

"No arguments," Lily interrupted, her voice firm but respectful. "Males are strong but sometimes incredibly dumb," she mumbled as she turned on her heel and left the room, her annoyance palpable.

Ava watched the exchange with wide eyes, clearly taken aback by Lily's boldness. She remained silent until Lily had left the room, then turned to me with a look of surprise.

"I didn't expect that," Ava said softly, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.

I chuckled, shaking my head.

"Lily has a way of making her opinions known. But she's right. We should go together. It's important. Don't get any bright ideas though."

Ava nodded, her expression softening.

"Alright, Caleb. Let's go shopping then."

As we prepared to leave, I couldn't help but notice the determination in Ava's eyes. Despite the challenges and the uncertainty, she was ready to embrace her new role, and I was determined to support her every step of the way.

We left the manor together, heading towards the nearby town where the best shops were located. As we walked, I noticed the way the sunlight caught her hair, highlighting the red undertones in her dark braids. Her scent, a mix of red apples, maple, and cinnamon, was intoxicating, and I found myself drawn to her more with each passing moment.

"Have you visited this town before?" I asked, trying to distract myself from her scent.

She shook her head.

"No, I never rally left home often. It's charming."

"It has its own unique character," I agreed. "I think you'll like some of the boutiques here. A few are owned by my pack members."

When we arrived at the town, we made our way to an upscale boutique known for its elegant and unique designs. The shopkeeper greeted us warmly, her eyes widening slightly when she recognized me.

"Caleb, welcome. How can I assist you today?" she asked, her tone respectful but refraining from the Alpha title.

"We need an outfit for Ava here," I said, gesturing to her. "Something elegant and suitable for a very important ceremony tonight." The shopkeeper nodded, her eyes appraising Ava with a professional gaze.

"Of course. Right this way."

As Ava was led to the fitting rooms, I wandered through the shop, looking for something that would complement her outfit. I found a dark suit with subtle silver accents that I thought would match well with whatever Ava chose.

Minutes turned into nearly an hour as Ava tried on various dresses. Occasionally, she would step out to show me an option, each more stunning than the last. Yet, none seemed to fully capture her essence.

Finally, she emerged wearing a flowing gown in a deep shade of midnight blue, adorned with delicate silver embroidery that shimmered in the light. The dress hugged her figure perfectly, and the soft fabric cascaded around her like a waterfall. She looked stunning, and for a moment, I was rendered speechless.

"What do you think?" she asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty. I cleared my throat, finding my voice.

"That one." She smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that made my heart skip a beat.

"This feels like the right one."

"It is the one" I held my hand out and she reached back taking my hand, letting me pull her closer. The shopkeeper clapped her hands softly.

"It's an excellent choice. It complements you beautifully, I absolutely agree Ava." As we finalized the purchase, I noticed Ava admiring a pair of silver earrings adorned with sapphire stones that matched her dress. Without hesitation, I asked the shopkeeper to include them.

"Caleb, you don't have to—" Ava began, but I interrupted gently.

"I want to. They complete the look."

She accepted with a unsure nod.

"Thank you. You've been very kind."

With our purchases in hand, we stepped out onto the bustling street. The afternoon sun was warm, and the scent of fresh bread and blooming flowers filled the air.

"Would you like to grab some lunch before we head back?" I suggested. "There's a café nearby that serves excellent sandwiches."

"That sounds lovely," she agreed.

We made our way to the café, finding a cozy table on the outdoor patio shaded by a large oak tree. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the gentle hum of conversation provided a comfortable backdrop. As we waited for our food, I found myself wanting to know more about her.

"Tell me, Ava, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?" She looked thoughtful.

"I love reading, especially about history and different cultures. There's so much to learn from the past."

"Any favorite books?"

"Too many to count," she laughed softly.

"But I've always been fascinated by tales of adventure and exploration. I haven't been many places outside of my old pack."

"Perhaps we can do some traveling, I havent left since I was a kid" I offered. "There's a library in the manor with a vast collection. You're welcome to any of the books as well."

Her eyes lit up.

"I'd love that. Thank you." Our conversation flowed effortlessly, covering a range of topics from favorite foods to amusing anecdotes from our childhoods. It felt natural, and I realized how easy it was to be around her. After lunch, we returned to the manor to prepare for the evening's ceremony. As I adjusted my tie in front of the mirror, I couldn't shake the feeling that tonight would be significant in more ways than one.

A knock on the door drew my attention.

"Come in," I called. Lily stepped inside, a knowing smile on her face.

"Nervous?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Me? Nervous? Never." She chuckled.

"You're a terrible liar. It's alright, Caleb. It's natural to feel this way."

"Maybe a little," I admitted. "It's an important night."

"She cares for you, you know," Lily said softly. "I can see it." I glanced at her.

"You think so?" She nodded.

"I'm rarely wrong about these things."

"I'm painfully aware thanks, Lily."

"Anytime," she said, heading toward the door. "Oh, and you look quite dashing, Ava will like it." I smiled.

"You don't look so bad yourself. Really Lily... you look beautiful." She grinned before slipping out.

"Thanks Caleb." A short while later, I waited at the bottom of the grand staircase for Ava. The manor was abuzz with activity as guests began to arrive. The air was filled with anticipation.

When Ava appeared at the top of the stairs, time seemed to slow. The gown accentuated her graceful figure, and the silver earrings shimmered softly. Her hair was styled elegantly half up, half down, and the smile she wore was both nervous and excited.

I met her at the foot of the stairs, offering my hand.

"You take my breath away," I said sincerely. She blushed lightly.

"You're quite handsome yourself."

"Shall we?" I asked, linking her arm through mine. We entered the grand hall together, the murmurs of conversation pausing as all eyes turned toward us. The ceremony commenced, the elders reciting the sacred words that bound us to our roles and to each other. As the ceremony progressed, I took a moment to address the assembled pack.

"Tonight marks not just a celebration of tradition, but a new chapter for us all," I began. "Ava and I have decided to take some time away to strengthen our bond and focus on our future, including the continuation of our bloodline." A ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd, a mixture of surprise and approval.

"During our absence, I am appointing Lily to oversee pack affairs," I continued. "She has proven herself capable and trustworthy, and I have every confidence in her leadership." Lily stepped forward, offering a respectful nod to the pack.

"I am honored to serve," she said simply. The elders exchanged glances, their expressions thoughtful but unreadable. The ceremony concluded with a traditional blessing, and the atmosphere shifted to one of celebration. Music filled the hall, and laughter echoed warmly.

"May I have this dance?" I asked Ava, bowing slightly. She curtsied playfully.

"It would be my pleasure."

We moved onto the dance floor, the melody guiding our steps. Dancing with her felt effortless, each movement synchronized as if we'd done this a hundred times before.

"Thank you for making today special," she said softly.

"It's only special because you're here," I replied. She looked up, her eyes reflecting the soft glow of the chandeliers.

"I'm glad we did this together."

"Me too." As the night progressed, we mingled with guests, shared stories, and enjoyed the festivities. It was a night of new beginnings, not just for us but for everyone present.

Later, as the crowd began to thin, we found ourselves alone on a balcony overlooking the moonlit gardens.

"It's beautiful out here," she whispered.

"It is " I said, staring directly at her, the words slipping out before I could think. She laughed lightly as she turned to look at me.

"You're quite the charmer."

"Only speaking the truth." A comfortable silence settled between us. The distant sound of music drifted on the night air.

"Ava," I began, turning to face her. "I know this has all happened quickly, but I want you to know that I'm committed to making this work." She met my gaze, her expression earnest.

"I believe you, Caleb. And I want the same."

I reached out, gently taking her hand.

"Together, then?"

"Together," she agreed, her fingers curling around mine. Just then, one of the elders approached, his expression grave.

"Alpha Caleb, the council needs to see you immediately," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. I glanced at Ava, a hint of concern flashing in her eyes.

"I'll be right there," I replied. The elder nodded and retreated back into the hall.

As we walked down the stone corridor toward the council chambers, I reached for Ava's hand, feeling her warmth seep into my palm. Her steps fell in sync with mine, each stride as confident and purposeful as the last, even if I could tell she was holding back just a bit. I could sense her tension—it was impossible not to feel it radiating from her, especially when the council was involved. They'd summoned me last minute, clearly less than thrilled about my choice to put Lily in charge while we were gone. My jaw tightened at the thought.

"I get the feeling this isn't exactly the friendly send-off we were hoping for," Ava murmured, glancing up at me. A hint of humor in her tone, but I knew she wasn't entirely joking.

"They've always been resistant to change," I replied, keeping my voice low. "They'd have preferred a strict line of succession, someone predictable and easily controlled."

Ava smirked, looking forward again.

"They must really love that you've got Lily, a 'sixteen-year-old to take charge, it was bound to raise some eyebrows. I believe in her though, she is smart and strong." I couldn't help but chuckle, squeezing her hand.

"They don't know what they're talking about. Lily's more capable than most of the adults here. They just don't like admitting a teen could do what they're barely capable of." The large oak doors of the council chamber loomed ahead, casting long shadows across the hallway. I felt Ava's grip tighten, a reassuring pressure that kept me steady. I paused just before we reached the doors, turning to face her fully.

"They're not going to make this easy," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "But we go in together, and whatever they throw at us, we stand our ground." Her expression softened, and she nodded, a look of fierce determination crossing her face.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the doors, and we walked in side by side. The council members were already seated in a semi-circle, each wearing that familiar, austere expression I'd come to associate with self-righteousness. Myron sat at the center, his silver-streaked hair and sharp gaze assessing us as we approached.
