"Alright, Mitsuri, the one responsible for all this is on top of the train," I said, pointing upward. "You handle him."
Mitsuri looked at me, her brows furrowing slightly. "Then where are you going?" she asked, a note of confusion in her voice.
I turned my attention to the trembling boy standing by the seat. "Hey, kid," I said, my tone firm but not unkind, "in which compartment are your parents?"
The boy hesitated for a moment before stammering, "The last compartment… they're in the last compartment."
Before I could respond, the girl who had tied herself to Mitsuri earlier stepped forward, clutching her hands nervously. "My family is also in the last compartment," she said, her voice shaking. "Please… please help them, too."
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. These kids… Who do they think I am, their personal savior? I couldn't exactly blame them, though. It wasn't like they had many other options.
"You brats…" I started, but stopped myself before finishing the thought. I shook my head with a resigned sigh. "Fine, follow me."
The boy and girl exchanged relieved glances, and Mitsuri suddenly giggled. I turned to her, raising an eyebrow. "What's so funny?"
"You're a lot kinder than you let on, Alex-san," she said, her voice light and teasing. She adjusted her grip on her sword and gave me a warm smile. "You go save their families. I'll handle the demon on top of the train."
I stared at her for a moment, considering her words. Kind, huh? I wasn't sure about that. I just didn't like leaving loose ends. Still, Mitsuri's confidence was reassuring. If anyone could handle Enmu, it was her.
"Alright," I said finally, nodding toward her. "Be careful up there. Don't do anything reckless."
She grinned, her eyes sparkling with determination. "I won't! You be careful too, Alex-san."
With that, she turned and made her way toward the back of the car, ready to climb onto the roof. I watched her go for a moment before turning my attention back to the two kids. They were looking at me expectantly, their fear still evident but mingled now with a glimmer of hope.
"Alright, let's move," I said, gesturing for them to follow. "Stay close, and don't wander off."
We made our way through the train, the atmosphere tense and heavy. The compartments were filled with sleeping passengers, their faces peaceful but eerily still. The demon's spell had them all in its grip, and it was unsettling to see so many people rendered utterly defenseless.
The boy and girl stayed close behind me, their footsteps soft and cautious. I glanced over my shoulder at them as we moved. "So, what's the deal with your families?" I asked, keeping my tone casual. "Are they all asleep like the rest?"
The boy nodded. "Yes… my parents were asleep when Enmu came."
The girl chimed in, her voice trembling. "It was the same for me. Enmu said… he said my family would be safe if I did what he wanted."
I let out a quiet sigh. Typical demon manipulation. Preying on fear and desperation, twisting it to serve their own ends. "Well," I said, "you don't have to worry about that anymore. We'll get your families out of this mess."
We reached the second-to-last compartment, and I pushed the door open, stepping inside. The scene was much the same—rows of sleeping passengers, their faces calm but unnaturally still. The kids' parents were likely just beyond the next door.
"Stay here," I instructed, holding up a hand to stop them from following me further. "I'll check ahead."
The kids nodded, their eyes wide as they clung to each other for comfort. I moved to the final compartment. Sliding the door open, I stepped inside.
The last compartment was eerily quiet. Rows of passengers lay slumped in their seats, the faint sound of their breathing the only sign they were still alive. At the far end of the car, I spotted two families, their appearances matching the descriptions the kids had given. They were fast asleep, their expressions serene.
Kneeling beside the nearest passenger, I placed a hand on their shoulder and gently shook them. "Hey," I said softly, "wake up."
No response.
Frowning, I reached out with my magic, letting a pulse of energy flow into the passenger. The spell holding them was strong, but nothing I couldn't break. With a quick surge of power, I shattered the enchantment, and the passenger's eyes fluttered open.
"W-what…?" they murmured groggily, looking around in confusion.
"Relax," I said, keeping my voice calm and steady. "You're safe now."
I moved to the next passenger, repeating the process. One by one, I broke the spell holding the families, guiding them back to consciousness. The kids' parents were among the last to wake, their eyes filling with relief as they saw their children standing at the door.
"Mom! Dad!" the boy cried, rushing forward to embrace his parents.
The girl followed suit, tears streaming down her face as she reunited with her family. The scene was heartwarming.
"Alright," I said, addressing the group. "Listen carefully. Stay in this compartment and don't move. Mitsuri and I will take care of the demon."
The parents nodded, their gratitude clear in their expressions. I turned back to the door, ready to return to Mitsuri and finish this.
As I stepped into the previous car, the kids' voices called out behind me. "Thank you," they said in unison, their words filled with sincerity.
I gave them a small nod before sliding the door shut behind me. Time to end this.
