Chapter 39 - No Time to Speak

"Who?" Amara whispered.

"Who?" she asked again, her voice trembling.

Maxwell was breathing hard, his chest rising and falling from the intensity of their argument. Their eyes locked—anger, fear, and something unspoken hanging between them.

"Maxwell, tell me," Amara pleaded, her tone soft but unyielding.

He clenched his jaw, lips pressed into a thin line. Words hovered on his tongue, but he swallowed them back. He couldn't—*wouldn't*—speak.

"Maxwell… say something," she urged, her desperation breaking through the silence.

"What does this even mean now? Are you crazy? You can't just say something like that and walk away!" she cried.

"Amara, that's enough," Maxwell said, his tone sharp and final.

"No, it's not enough! I don't accept it!"

"I don't care if you do or not," he snapped back.

"Who wants to kill me, Maxwell?" she shouted. "I need to know who!"

Before he could answer, the door burst open. Ethan stood in the doorway, panting, his face pale and drenched in sweat.

"Sir—we need to go. Now!" he said, his voice low but urgent.

Maxwell's eyes widened. "We have to go, Amara."

"You have to tell me!" she said, her voice breaking. "What the hell is going on?"

"Amara, we don't have time," Maxwell barked. "Get this through your head—we have to leave *now*."

"That's enough!" she shouted back. "I'm not leaving until you tell me the truth!"

Maxwell froze for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, suddenly, he stepped forward, grabbed her face with one trembling hand, and hissed, "I said enough! Whether you want to go or not, this escape ends *here*! We're going back home—if you want it or not."

He released her abruptly. Amara stumbled back, falling to the ground, eyes wide in shock. Maxwell stood over her for a heartbeat, his face a storm of anger and guilt.

"Ethan," he said quietly, without looking back, "get Sisi. My wife needs help walking."

Ethan nodded stiffly and stepped aside as Sisi approached, nervous and pale. She hesitated before kneeling beside Amara, her hands trembling as she tried to help her up.

Amara didn't move. She just stared after Maxwell as he strode out of the room, his shoulders rigid, his silence heavier than any words he could have spoken.
