Chapter 14 - Chapter 11

The cool air of Cambridge carried a crispness that was both unfamiliar and invigorating. As I stepped out of the cab, my eyes swept across the breathtaking architecture of King's College, the centuries-old buildings standing like sentinels of knowledge and history. My journey had brought me here, far from the chaos of the Wilson estate, far from Cassandra's treachery, and into the future my mother had always dreamed for me.

Darren carried my luggage without a word, his easy confidence grounding me in the moment. He had been my anchor since I landed, ensuring my transition into this new world was seamless.

"You nervous?" he asked as we entered the grand dormitory building where I would be staying.

I exhaled slowly. "A little. It's a lot to take in."

He smirked. "You'll be fine. I promise."

My apartment was large and lavish, located in the same building as Darren. He told me my father made the preparations months ago to make sure I'd be able to study in peace. No more drama, and no weight of expectations pressing down on my shoulders. Just me and a fresh start.

As Darren set my suitcase down in the living room, he turned to me. "Classes don't start for a few days. You should take some time to explore, settle in."

I nodded, already feeling the anticipation of what lay ahead. "That sounds like a good idea."

"Come on then," he said, offering his hand. "Let me show you around."

The next few days passed in a whirlwind. Cambridge was everything I had hoped it would be—prestigious yet welcoming, grand yet intimate. I spent hours walking the cobblestone streets, soaking in the energy of the city, the intellectual fervor buzzing through every corridor of the university.

Darren was by my side for most of it, effortlessly slipping back into the role he had played in my life long ago—protector, confidant, friend. But there was something else lingering between us now, something unspoken yet undeniable.

One evening, we sat along the River Cam, watching as students punted boats under the soft glow of the setting sun.

"You look like you belong here," Darren mused, leaning back on his elbows. "Like you were always meant to be here."

I glanced at him, a small smile forming. "Maybe I was."

He turned to me then, his expression unreadable. "So, what's next for you, Elise? Now that Cassandra's gone, now that you're free?"

I let out a slow breath. "I think... I just want to live. To finally figure out who I am without all the chaos."

Darren studied me for a moment before nodding. "Sounds like a good plan."

The silence between us was comfortable, filled with the promise of something new.

The first day of classes arrived sooner than I expected. Dressed in a simple yet polished ensemble, I walked into my first lecture hall, nerves prickling my skin. But as I took my seat and listened to the professor begin his lecture, the nerves faded, replaced by excitement.

This was where I belonged.

After class, I met up with Darren at a nearby café. He had been waiting for me, his usual smirk in place. "So? How was it?"

I took a sip of my coffee before answering. "Amazing. Challenging, but amazing."

"Told you you'd be fine."

I rolled my eyes. "You love being right, don't you?"

"Absolutely."

We laughed, the moment feeling light and effortless. But beneath it all, I knew this was just the beginning. A new chapter, a new life.

And for the first time, I couldn't wait to see where it would take me.
