Chapter 27 - Fluorescent Forest

The door was blasted off its hinges and a hooded demon ran through followed by none other than Winter. I stood up in a hurry. "What's happening!" I asked Winter, throwing my arms up in a questioning gesture. "No idea," he said back. We both looked at the hooded demon as the building quaked around us once more. "There is little time to explain!" He said, but continued, "I'll tell you as much as I can, I'm Bogdan and I was the leader of this group, in the 20 minutes it took the infernals to get here I learned a few things, including that you two were innocent so i've decided to give you guys a chance, I'll only say a few things before you have to leave. I implore you to choose a side, the infernals might look righteous if you ever hear their story, but all they are doing is oppressing a fifth of their own race! They kill all those who stand against them, just like they killed all my men now. Hopefully you've seen that we are somewhat reasonable. I really don't know how else to explain this quickly. Anyway we did you a wrong by dragging you here, and we've done you another wrong by dragging you into this, but it is in neither of our hands now" Bogdan pulled out a device and started tinkering with it. "What do you mean by that?" I asked, "Well if Citlali sees you, and he will, there will be a notice put up for your arrest, and- oh here we go," Bogdan said as the device he was fiddling with started to vibrate. "Who's that?" I asked, "He's an insect that I've met a few times and he's about to come into the room, I sense him." Bogdan pulled his sword from its sheath and slashed a few times at the cell bars, causing them to fall to the ground with a loud clang. He then threw the device at the wall behind me causing a rippling, shaking blue portal to form that looked really unstable and the device to fall apart. "Now go! There's a solid 50% chance you'll end up in space or something, but it's better than staying here," he said.

As he said that a towering infernal ducked into the room, purple plating all over his body. There was an overwhelming amount of energy that seemed to exude from him causing me to stand in awe for a second 'That must be Citlali' I thought. "Things are finally starting to get interesting," Winter said as he tapped me on the shoulder before diving headfirst through the portal. "Oh not again…" I heard Citlali say as I followed.

"Who were they?" Citlali asked Bogdan curiously. "They aren't involved in this," "HA, as if you'd expect me to believe that, it's the least you could do to tell me after aaallllll that I told you don't you think," "it's as you said earlier, you're talking to a dead man aren't you, so it doesn't matter what I know," Bogdan said with a slight smile. Citlali's mandibles clicked together as he chuckled, "I'm surprised that you didn't try to run again," "you would have found me easily as you are now" "true, anyway, you've had a few too many final words I think, goodbye for good this time," He said, snapping his fingers and causing a bubble to appear around Bogdan. Citlali stepped out of the room and snapped his fingers again. The bubble imploded with such force that even the room that he was in moments before was now just heaps of rubble.

Teleporting was a sensation that I was well used to by now given that I used to be able to do it at will, but this teleport SUCKED. It was more like you were getting shoved far too quickly into a narrow tube full of sand while getting thrown around by a giant. Never in my years had I experienced such a poorly performed teleport, I didn't even know that it could get half this bad before not working anymore. Regardless, as soon as I felt myself enter the open air, which only took a few seconds, I glanced around and noticed that I was laying on the ground in some grass. I stood up and dusted myself off. This place was very different from the stained slopes and starter area. While I was in a forest right now, that was the only similarity that this place had to the other islands. The ground was covered in a dense layer of greenish blue grass, with some shrubs here and there. The trees were around a hundred feet away from each other, but they were over a thousand feet tall each. The bottom of the tree foliage was so far away it almost looked like that it was the sky. That however, would be a very strange sky. Dim blue, purple, gold, and green could be seen making up the colors of the crowns. Needles from the trees were flitting down slowly as lightning bugs and other illuminant creatures and mosses made the place bright, even though I am pretty sure It is night. I can not see the sky so I can not really tell, but I was vaguely keeping track of time in that dungeon. 'I don't see Kevin' I realized after looking around a bit more. Which wasn't surprising given the awful teleport. "WINTER!! WHERE ARE YOU" I heard someone yell from far away. "OVER HERE" I yelled back.

It took some time but we found each other. "So uh, what just happened exactly," Kevin asked in bewilderment. "So… we got imprisoned, then the leader of the people that imprisoned us broke us out because some crazy dude killed all his men, then he asked for help and threw us here… yeah" I responded. "It's safe to say that this wasn't on my bucket list," Kevin muttered. 'What does that even mean… whatever' I decided not to ask about it. "I guess we should find civilization or a water supply or something," Kevin said while shaking his head. "Why?" "So we can live??" "...You make a fair point, let us go then,"

The forest was truly a wonder. In my old world there was nothing quite like this. Tree's always used to only have green leaves, with a few exceptions, and there were plenty of natural things that glowed, but not combined in this wonderful cacophony of color and light. 'If there was a forest like this I would have loved to build my tower in it, although it would have had to have been a lot taller,' I thought as we walked along the soft grassy forest floor, which was sometimes replaced with moss or stone, I even saw an entire area covered in glowing mushrooms. *swish* Kevin and I looked over, as we both heard the sound. "Oh come on" I said in exasperation. "What is it?" Kevin asked, "It is a wisp, at least that is the name I know it by," I said. It looked like a glowing ball of white energy no larger than the size of my fist that left a faint trail of energy behind it as it drifted along, hence its name, as it appeared to be a small wisp of energy flowing with the breeze. "What's so bad about it? I've never seen you react that way to anything." Kevin said stepping backwards from the wisp a bit, I followed suit. "Well, they are intangible for one, and standard magic does not work on them because they are a spirit, a mass of lingering regret or whatever. I'm not sure that they are even in this plane of existence," "that sounds complicated," "Yeah I do not understand it fully, but if they notice you they'll come at you lightning fast and upon touching you, if you do not know how to repel it, you will not be able to use magic while it sucks out your life force, desperately and pointlessly trying to become tangible once more." "So you die if you touch it?" "They usually leave you alive so that they may feast upon your essence again later," "So we should run then?" "No, too sudden of a movement and they will notice you, use magic and they notice you, leak magic they notice you, but we are not strong enough for that luckily," "Oh look, there's another one" Kevin said pointing out one a bit behind the one we were looking at. "Awsome, we are leaving," I said. 'How strange, these things usually only form in areas with… history, so I would have never expected to see them in a place as beautiful as this…' I mused while walking away. "Be on the lookout for more of those," I said.

Luckily for us, before we saw any more wisp's we heard the sound of flowing water, so we walked over to it. Sure enough it was a stream, about 3 feet wide, however, "It's deep," Kevin said. And it was. I could barely see the bottom and the water was clear as crystal. The only reason I could even see the bottom was because of the white glowing algae on the walls and rocks. "How eerie," Kevin muttered, I agreed mentally. I bent down and cupped my hands into the water. It was very cool to the touch and felt nice. "Are you sure it's safe to drink?" Kevin asked, "No," I responded, and took a sip. "Water," I said, nodding my head. I grabbed some more. Kevin sighed and grabbed some too. I heard a soft swish on the other side of the river and looked up quickly, worried about another wisp. But it was not a wisp, it was a person!
