Leaving Mount Natagumo and its spider demons behind, Kaito also left the countryside and ventured into the city.
Though many aspects of the cities in this world bore similarities to those of his original world, there were also stark differences.
After passing through several cities and riding a vehicle called a train, Kaito finally arrived at the nation's most bustling metropolis, Tokyo.
This country was currently in the midst of a cultural upheaval, fully embracing foreign influences, with all sorts of novel things emerging endlessly.
After wandering through Tokyo, Kaito slipped unnoticed into a library with an exceptionally vast collection of books and settled there.
Days passed, and Kaito remained in the library, flipping through countless books at a speed unattainable by ordinary people.
He nearly became the subject of an urban legend as the library's ghost.
With his immensely powerful mental faculties, Kaito absorbed new knowledge at an astonishing rate, quickly gaining a clear understanding of this world.
The more he learned, the more he marveled.
If his original world hadn't been invaded by the extraterrestrial Ōtsutsuki clan, it might have developed into something like this world.
After all, the historical progression of ancient times in his world was remarkably similar to this one.
But the arrival of the Ōtsutsuki clan introduced chakra and ninjas—elements that shouldn't have existed.
The emergence of ninjas gave national leaders access to immense martial power, eliminating the need to develop technology to win wars, no matter how many conflicts arose.
Though his world's technological advancements weren't entirely backward, they paled in comparison to this world, which had progressed holistically through science.
Through books, Kaito came to understand the most illogical aspect of his world: ninjas, as tools of the nobility, suppressed the common people, freezing societal progress and preventing civilians from reaping the benefits of technological advancements.
"I've gathered quite a bit of study material," Kaito mused, deciding not to dwell too deeply on these issues. Instead, he planned to quickly copy some interesting books to bring back.
"The political ones can go to Itachi, and the scientific ones to Orochimaru."
With that, he made his cheerful decision.
When a Kasugai Crow from the Demon Slayer Corps finally tracked him down after much effort, Kaito had already left the library with his haul.
"Uchiha-san! Uchiha-san! Preparations are complete! Preparations are complete!"
In a secluded alley in the city, the crow perched on a trash can, shouting at Kaito.
Kaito nodded and responded, "Thank you for your trouble. Please inform Ubuyashiki-sama that I'll return to the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters tomorrow."
"Understood! Understood!"
Watching the crow flap its wings and fly off, Kaito finally felt some peace in his ears.
It seemed there was no time left for sightseeing.
He moved forward, intending to pass through the alley to another street.
"Hm?"
He suddenly gave an intrigued smile and turned toward a seemingly solid wall.
Then, he effortlessly passed through the "wall."
"A Blood Demon Art creating illusions?"
He gazed at the small courtyard hidden behind the Blood Demon Art.
As it was still daytime, no one emerged to stop him despite his sudden intrusion.
"Excuse me!" Kaito called out politely, though his actions were anything but as he strode into the courtyard and headed straight for the house's front door.
Standing before the door, he touched it and smiled.
Then, he pushed it open, naturally sidestepping a dagger that thrust out from inside.
"Well, that was dangerous," Kaito said with a smile, grabbing the wrist of the ambusher holding the dagger.
"Who are you?!"
A young man with black-and-white hair and demonic eyes glared fiercely at Kaito.
His other hand, with sharp claws, swiped toward Kaito's face.
"Too hot-headed," Kaito said, unfazed, watching the young man.
"Die!" the young man roared, his swiping hand stopping mere centimeters from Kaito's eyes, unable to move further.
"How?!" The young man looked in shock at the translucent chains binding his body.
"Good day. And you are?"
At that moment, a gentle female voice spoke, and an elegant woman in a kimono emerged from the house's basement.
"Lady Tamayo, run!!" the young man beside Kaito shouted urgently.
"Good day," Kaito said, releasing the young man's wrist, letting him glare ferociously.
He smiled warmly and said, "Though you two are demons, your auras are different from typical demons. Especially this young man—you don't have the foul stench of a man-eating demon."
"Don't call Lady Tamayo foul!!" the young man roared, seething.
"Hm?" Kaito glanced at him, puzzled. "I didn't say the lady was foul."
"That's what you meant!!" the young man snapped, glaring as if he could devour him.
"Since you're a good kid who hasn't eaten humans, don't look at me like you're about to," Kaito said, unmoved, patting the struggling young man's shoulder. He then turned to the woman watching him warily.
"Such unique demons. You must be the Lady Tamayo Ubuyashiki-sama mentioned."
"Good day. I am Tamayo," she replied, seeming to regain her composure, responding courteously. "And you are?"
Kaito smiled. "I'm Uchiha Kaito, an onmyoji currently working with the Demon Slayer Corps."
"An onmyoji?" Tamayo glanced at the spiritual chains binding the young man. "No wonder your techniques feel different from Blood Demon Arts."
"Lady Tamayo! Don't trust him so easily!" the young man shouted again.
"Uchiha-san," Tamayo said, bowing to him. "Could you please release Yushiro? As you said, this boy has never eaten a human."
"And you?" Kaito looked at her.
"Me?" Tamayo gave a bitter, pained smile. "I'm different from him—a person steeped in sin. If not for…"
She paused, softening her expression before continuing, "Never mind that. Since you're working with Ubuyashiki-sama and have heard of me, you must know some of my history."
Kaito nodded. "I've heard a bit. Ubuyashiki-sama mentioned that you used medicine to break free from Muzan Kibutsuji's control when he was defeated by Yoriichi Tsugikuni."
"So Ubuyashiki-sama didn't reveal my disgraceful side," Tamayo said with a faint smile. "But it's been a long time since he last contacted me. Your presence must have given the Demon Slayer Corps the confidence to face Muzan Kibutsuji, hasn't it?"
Kaito didn't deny it.
"In that case," she said, looking at him firmly, "I trust Ubuyashiki-sama's judgment. You may take my life, but please spare Yushiro."
