Chapter 205 - Chapter 202:Semifinals – Ash Ketchum vs Gary Oak (Part 1)

The Indigo Plateau stadium was a coliseum of pure, unbridled energy, even hours after the rain had finally cleared. The field had been meticulously repaired overnight by league maintenance crews fresh turf rolled out over the craters, toxic puddles neutralized by dedicated Poison-types, scorch marks scrubbed away, and the white lines repainted with crisp precision.

But the scars of the previous battles lingered in the air like a ghost: the faint scent of ozone from electric attacks, the damp earthiness of mud churned by titanic clashes, and the electric buzz of anticipation that made every spectator's skin tingle. Eighty thousand voices filled the stands, a sea of colors from Kanto badges, banners, and homemade signs waving like a living tide.

The massive central screen flickered to life once more, drawing every eye. The shuffle began names of the four remaining trainers glowing in gold letters, spinning like a lottery wheel of destiny.

INDIGO LEAGUE SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS

The letters slowed, settled.

Match 1:

Ash Ketchum (Pallet Town)

vs

Gary Oak (Pallet Town)

Match 2:

Giselle (Celadon City)

vs

A.J. (Unnamed Route Trainer)

A massive, unified cheer erupted from the crowd half thunderous excitement for the long-awaited Pallet Town showdown, half surprised gasps that two trainers from the same sleepy town had clawed their way to the semifinals.

"Pallet Pride!" banners shot up everywhere. Kids in the lower bowls started a chant: "Ash! Gary! Ash! Gary!" Vendors hawked special "Rivalry Hot Dogs" with Pallet Town mustard, and the announcers' voices cut through the din with barely contained glee.

Commentator 1 (voice booming with hype): "Ladies and gentlemen, the semifinals are here and it's a Pallet Town civil war! Ash Ketchum, the underdog who just dismantled Hoenn's prodigy Brendan Birch in a rain-soaked spectacle, faces off against Gary Oak, the grandson of Professor Oak himself, who's been mowing down opponents with surgical precision all tournament!"

Commentator 2: "This rivalry goes back to their childhood days bike races, badge hunts, and endless one-upmanship. But this is the Indigo League semifinals. No more games. This is where legends are forged… or broken."

In the competitor tunnel, Gary Oak stepped out first. His signature lab coat was crisp, his hair perfectly gelled despite the humidity, and his eevee walked at his side like a shadow of arrogance. The crowd gave him a solid cheer he had earned it with his flawless, calculated battles.

But when his eyes locked on Ash emerging from the opposite tunnel, Gary's usual cocky smirk sharpened into something fiercer, more proactive. He raised one hand in a slow, deliberate wave not friendly, but a clear challenge. His lips moved, mouthing words that carried across the distance with crystal clarity:

"I'm finally going to crush you, Ashy-boy."

Gary's eyes burned with the same fire that had fueled their rivalry since they were kids racing bikes through Pallet Town's quiet streets. He held the gaze for a long second, then turned on his heel and strode toward the preparation rooms without another glance, eevee trotting obediently beside him.

Ash just shook his head, a small, fond smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Pikachu on his left shoulder let out a soft, knowing "Pika…" of agreement, while Eevee nuzzled his right cheek comfortingly, her silver fur warm against the cooling air.

"Gary will always be Gary," Ash muttered to himself, his voice laced with a mix of amusement and resolve. He could feel the familiar spark of their old rivalry igniting in his chest not anger, but excitement.

Gary had always pushed him to be better, even if it came with barbs and boasts. Tomorrow, that push would turn into a battle neither would forget.

Misty and Sabrina were waiting for him just outside the tunnel, flanked by Brock. Misty looped her arm through Ash's left one immediately, her grin wide and teasing.

"He's still all talk. You're going to shut him up tomorrow and I can't wait to see his face when you do."

Sabrina took his right hand, squeezing gently, her usual calm demeanor softened by the pride in her eyes. Her voice was soft but fierce, laced with that possessive warmth she reserved only for him.

"He underestimates how much you've grown, Ash. Tomorrow… show him. Show everyone."

Brock clapped a hand on Ash's shoulder, smiling warmly.

"It's going to be a classic. Just like old times but with higher stakes. Get some rest. You've got this."

Ash nodded, the group heading back to their cottage number seven, the wooden haven that had become their sanctuary amid the league chaos. The path was lined with fans now, some waving signs ("Ash 4 Finals!"), others calling out congratulations. Ash waved back, but his mind was already racing ahead.

The moment the door closed behind them, the tension melted away like morning mist. The cottage smelled of fresh berries and Brock's ever-present stew simmering on the stove. Misty flopped onto the couch with a dramatic sigh, pulling Ash down beside her.

Sabrina curled up on his other side, head resting on his shoulder, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his arm. Both girls were exhausted from hours of screaming in the stands, but neither showed any sign of letting go. Togepi cooed from Misty's lap, and Psyduck wandered in from the kitchen, looking as confused as ever.

Ash released his full team letting them stretch, eat, and unwind after the grueling quarterfinal. Pikachu immediately claimed his lap, curling up with a contented "Pika…" Eevee nestled against Misty's side, tail flicking lazily.

The others sprawled across the floor and furniture: the alpha Pidgeot preening on the balcony railing, Shiny Gyarados coiled in the small outdoor pond (a league-provided luxury for water-types), Tauros stamping lightly in the corner, Dragonite dozing peacefully by the fireplace, and Aerodactyl perched on the roof beam, wings folded in permanent Mega form.

While Misty and Sabrina slowly drifted off cuddling him blissfully, their breathing evening out into soft, rhythmic sighs Ash closed his eyes and mentally pulled up his system interface. The glow was faint, visible only to him in the quiet of his mind.

The rewards from the Brendan match still lingered, a quiet triumph.

[Hidden Mission Completed: Win Against Brendan Birch]

Reward: Hoenn Starters Mega Evolution Stones

→ Sceptilite

→ Swampertite

→ Blazikenite

Ash's lips curved into a slow smile. Three Mega Stones perfect for future Hoenn team members he planned to catch or trade for. The system always knew how to reward him just right, turning potential regrets into future strengths.

Tomorrow… Gary's going to bring everything he has. I need to be ready.

He mentally opened his team roster, reviewing the lineup he'd finalized in his head during the walk back. Tomorrow's six:

Pikachu (his heart, his partner, always first the electric mouse who refused to evolve, but whose bond made him stronger than any Raichu)

Pidgeot (alpha version larger, faster, fiercer than any regular Pidgeot, with wings that could outpace a jet)

Shiny Gyarados (the massive red serpent, a force of water and dragon rage that struck fear into even the bravest hearts)

Tauros (raw, unyielding power the herd leader who charged like a stampede)

Dragonite (hugging mence his strongest radiating an intense aura of power that made the air hum around her)

Aerodactyl (permanent Mega form ancient fury unleashed, wings like scythes, a relic of prehistoric skies)

No levels appeared in his mind when he visualized them only he could see the numbers through the system.

To everyone else even Misty, Sabrina, and Gary they were just incredibly strong Pokémon. That was enough. The system's gift let Ash know their true potential, but the world saw the results.

Ash leaned back against the couch, Misty's head on one shoulder, Sabrina's on the other. Their warmth grounded him, chasing away the pre-battle jitters. Pikachu's soft snores vibrated against his chest.

For a moment, the world outside the roaring crowds, Gary's challenge, the semifinals faded. This was his family. This was what he fought for.

Tomorrow, he would face Gary Oak again not as the kids racing bikes through Pallet Town's quiet streets, but as two of the strongest trainers in Kanto. And this time… Ash wasn't going to lose.

The next morning dawned bright and clear, the sun glinting off the freshly repaired field like it was mocking the scars of yesterday's battles.

The stadium was packed even earlier than usual vendors hawking "Pallet Rivalry" merchandise, families picnicking in the upper decks, and league officials buzzing with last-minute checks.

The air smelled of fresh grass, popcorn, and that indefinable scent of impending history.

The semifinals began with Match 2 Giselle vs A.J. a solid, strategic battle that ended with Giselle advancing after a tense Ice vs Fighting matchup. But the real electricity built for the main event.

Semifinal 1: Ash Ketchum vs Gary Oak

The crowd was deafening from the moment both trainers stepped onto the field.

Gary walked with his usual swagger, lab coat crisp, eevee at his side like a smug shadow. The crowd gave him a solid cheer he had earned it with his flawless, calculated battles all tournament.

Ash walked calmly, Pikachu on his shoulder, Eevee trotting beside him no smirk, just quiet determination.

The referee's voice boomed over the speakers.

"This is a full 6-on-6 single battle! The winner advances to the finals! Trainers… begin!"

Gary threw first, his smirk widening.

"Magmar! Burn him down!"

Magmar burst onto the field flames roaring from its head and shoulders, eyes locked on Pikachu with predatory hunger.

Ash smiled softly. "Pikachu! Let's go!"

Pikachu leaped forward from Ash's shoulder, landing lightly on the grass, cheeks sparking with golden electricity. The crowd erupted Pikachu's refusal to evolve made him an icon, a symbol of unbreakable bond over raw power.

Commentator 1: "And we start with the classic Pikachu versus Magmar! Electric mouse against fire demon! Type advantage to Pikachu, but Magmar's flames could turn this into a barbecue if Gary plays it right!"

Commentator 2: "Gary's Magmar is no slouch it's taken down water-types with ease this tournament. But Pikachu… that little guy's got heart for days."

Gary didn't waste time. "Flamethrower scorch him!"

Magmar inhaled deeply and unleashed a roaring stream of orange-red fire, the flames twisting like a living serpent across the field. The heat was immediate, making the air shimmer.

Ash: "Agility dodge left, then Thunderbolt!"

Pikachu blurred with impossible speed, Agility kicking in. The flames grazed his tail, singeing fur and drawing a hiss of pain, but he twisted mid-air and fired a blinding Thunderbolt.

The electric bolt arced like lightning, striking Magmar square in the chest.

Magmar staggered, flames flickering, but roared back with Fire Punch fist engulfed in roaring fire, swinging in a wide arc.

Pikachu landed lightly and dodged with Quick Attack, zipping around Magmar's side.

"Iron Tail slam his arm!"

Pikachu's tail glowed silver, whipping around to smash Magmar's extended arm.

The impact rang like metal on stone Magmar winced, punch fizzling out.

The crowd was already on its feet.

"PIKA-POWER!"

"GET HIM, PIKACHU!"

"MAGMAR'S FLAMES ARE INSANE!"

In the VIP section, Amber bounced in her seat. "Big brother's Pikachu is so fast! Go, Pikachu!"

Delia clutched her hands, whispering, "Be careful, sweetie…"

Daisy yelled, "Burn that fire rat!"

Cynthia (under her hat): "Ash is using the speed advantage perfectly. Gary's going to have to adapt."

Back in Littleroot, Birch watched with interest. "That Pikachu… it's refusing to evolve? Bold choice."

Paul in Sinnoh snorted. "Whatever. Let's see how long that lasts against fire."

Tyson in hoenn: "So, you are the person who defeated my rival let's see what are the tricks you have"

Mewoth with boots:"mewoth.... "

Giovanni swirled his wine. "The mouse is stronger than it looks… but oak's grandson is no fool either."

Gary: "Magmar Confuse Ray! Then Fire Blast!"

Magmar's eyes glowed red, firing a disorienting beam. Pikachu twisted away, but the edge caught him head spinning for a moment.

Ash sent a quick Aura pulse: Shake it off, buddy. Focus on me. We've got this.

Pikachu shook his head, eyes clearing, and charged with Volt Tackle body wrapped in crackling electricity.

Magmar fired Fire Blast a massive star-shaped inferno.

Pikachu plowed through the edge of the flames, fur smoking, minor burns on his side, but slammed into Magmar with full force.

The fire-type roared, stumbling back.

Gary: "Fire Punch combo don't let up!"

Magmar swung two flaming fists. Pikachu dodged the first with Agility, took a glancing hit on the second yelping as fire singed his cheek but countered with Thunder Wave, paralyzing Magmar's arm.

Ash: "Now Iron Tail barrage!"

Pikachu's tail glowed silver, whipping Magmar's legs, chest, arms. Each hit landed with a crack, sparks flying.

Magmar staggered, flames dimming.

"Flamethrower one last time!"

Ash: "Thunder from above!"

Pikachu leaped high, calling down a massive Thunder bolt from the sky. The electric strike hit Magmar dead-center, overwhelming his fire resistance. Magmar convulsed, flames extinguishing, and collapsed.

"Magmar is unable to battle! Ash takes the lead 1-0!"

The crowd went wild "PIKA-CHU! PIKA-CHU!" chants echoing.

Gary recalled Magmar, smirking despite the loss. "Not bad, Ashy-boy. But I'm just warming up."

Gary threw next. "Nidoqueen! Show them real power!"

Nidoqueen appeared massive, regal, horn gleaming like a diamond. The ground-type queen stamped once, cracking the turf.

Ash: "Gyarados! Let's go!"

The ball opened with a massive splash. Shiny Gyarados burst forth enormous red scales gleaming, fins flaring like sails, eyes glowing with primal fury.

The stadium gasped the rare shiny was a sight to behold, a living legend of the sea.

Commentator 1: "Shiny Gyarados! The star his back after his entry in the prelims he is back once again! Water and dragon power against Nidoqueen's ground and poison bulk!"

Commentator 2: "Gary's Nidoqueen is a tank she's shrugged off dragon-types before. But that Gyarados looks hungry for revenge."

The battle was head-to-head from the start neither Pokémon giving an inch.

Nidoqueen opened with Poison Sting needles flying like arrows. Gyarados countered with Dragon Breath purple flames sweeping them away.

Nidoqueen used Earthquake the field shook violently. Gyarados, in the air, used Rain Dance to summon a downpour, then Hydro Pump a massive water beam slamming Nidoqueen back.

They traded for minutes Ice Beam from Gyarados freezing Nidoqueen's arm, Dragon Tail whipping her side. Nidoqueen's Thunder Punch grazed Gyarados's scales, Crunch bit into his fin.

The crowd was on edge.

"GYARADOS IS HUGE!"

"NIDOQUEEN'S NOT BACKING DOWN!"

"THIS IS A SLUGFEST!"

Amber: "Big brother's Gyarados is like a dragon from stories!"

Delia: "Be careful… that Nidoqueen looks tough…"

Daisy: "Crush her, shiny boy!"

Cynthia: "Water versus ground… Gary's playing the poison angle smartly."

Birch: "That Gyarados is a monster… Brendan would have loved to study it."

Paul: "Tch. All power, no strategy."

Clemont: "The water pressure from that Hydro Pump it's generating tidal forces!"

Bonnie: "Go shiny dragon! Eat her up!"

Giovanni: "The shiny… rare. Valuable."

Gyarados coiled around Nidoqueen Wrap tightening. Nidoqueen roared, using Poison Sting point-blank. Gyarados winced but finished with Crunch on her horn, then Hyper Beam a golden beam blasting her back.

Nidoqueen collapsed.

"Nidoqueen is unable to battle! Ash leads 2-0!"

Gary: "Alakazam! End this!"

Alakazam appeared spoons spinning, eyes glowing psychic blue.

Ash: "Tauros! Go!"

Tauros charged horns lowered, eyes wild.

Alakazam used Psychic lifting Tauros into the air. Tauros struggled, thrashing.

Ash: "Horn Drill break free!"

Tauros spun, drilling through the psychic hold, charging Alakazam. The psychic teleported, but Tauros grazed him with Body Slam.

Alakazam fired Shadow Ball Tauros took it full-force, staggering.

Gary: "Psychic slam him!"

Alakazam lifted Tauros again and slammed him repeatedly. Tauros roared but couldn't break free. A final Confusion finished him.

"Tauros is unable to battle! Score 2-1!"

Alakazam was breathing hard severe injuries from Tauros' charges.

Gary: "Alakazam you can still fight."

Ash smiled. "Pidgeot! Your turn!"

Pidgeot alpha version appeared. Larger wings, fiercer eyes. The crowd gasped.

Pidgeot used Aerial Ace too fast.

Alakazam tried Psychic but Pidgeot dodged and finished with Brave Bird a diving comet strike.

"Alakazam is unable to battle! Ash leads 3-1!"
