The bamboo walls of the riverside house creaked in rhythm with the wind, the fragrance of wet earth drifting through the slats.
Within, the hall was quiet—Amelia, Sophia, Lin Lin, Lucy, Jata, Bata, Lily, Thea, even Fatty Ben's wife, all had fallen asleep together on the wide bedding laid across the central chamber. Their breathing was even, their faces softened by slumber.
