IMOGEN'S POV
I hung up the phone and stared at the screen for a long moment. My hands were shaking, and I wasn't sure if it was from anger or something else entirely. Elijah's voice kept echoing in my head, that low rumble that used to make my knees weak from fear now just made me want to scream.
The house felt too quiet around me. Joseph was upstairs sleeping, finally peaceful after our conversation about Talia. I could hear Isaac and Vera moving around somewhere, probably giving me space to process everything that had happened today. But I couldn't process anything. My brain felt like it was full of static.
I heard Vera leave and that was when I decided that I needed water. My throat was dry from crying, from talking, from holding back all the words I really wanted to say to Elijah. I padded downstairs in my socks, not bothering to turn on the lights. The kitchen was dark except for the glow from the microwave clock.
