She suddenly blurted out, "Xiaojue, let's break up."
Once the words escaped her lips, she herself was stunned.
It was as if the words hadn't come from her mouth but had instead jumped out from her brain, completely out of her control. After much internal struggle, she had said them out loud after all.
Huang Xiaojue was stunned too; he couldn't believe it.
"Xixi!"
She fell silent.
He, too, fell silent.
Over the phone, she could hear Huang Xiaojue's heavy breathing. A long time passed, and neither of them uttered a word. Then, she heard the busy signal. Huang Xiaojue had hung up—that was the first time he had ever hung up on her.
After that, the phone never rang again.
She kept staring at her phone until she got off work. She wasn't truly ready to give up; in her heart, she hadn't meant what she said about the breakup. But she also knew that once the words were spoken, she had left herself no way out.
