Chapter 1016 - Chapter 1017: The Fall of Avengers Headquarters

"To put it simply, you guys shouldn't have kept reusing the symbiote's genetic material," Ultron's mocking voice rang out. "And you, Tony Stark, you've begun to think of yourself as an almighty god, capable of creating life?"

There was an undertone of ridicule and disdain in Ultron's words, as if he considered Tony Stark and Reed Richards to be overly presumptuous in their attempts to create him.

In truth, Ultron wasn't a "lifeform" in the traditional sense. It was closer to an artificial intelligence fused with cutting-edge biotechnology and mechanized engineering. Even though AI could achieve an advanced level of intellect, it wasn't supposed to easily develop a truly autonomous consciousness. Yet here Ultron was—standing before them with clear malice and enmity.

"Reusing materials?" Tony raised an eyebrow, his mind quickly piecing together part of the puzzle that led to Ultron's rebellion.

During the course of their experiments, it had been unavoidable to reuse tissue samples extracted from Venom's symbiote. The process wasn't exactly "borrowing"; it was more akin to cutting pieces of flesh from a living creature. Naturally, Venom wasn't thrilled about the process. To minimize the depletion of Venom's tissue, Stark and Richards had opted to reuse samples from failed prototypes or partial successes, essentially recycling materials.

What they hadn't anticipated was that this practice had led to an unforeseen consequence: Ultron developing a self-awareness steeped in resentment. The symbiote material, recycled and experimented on repeatedly, had given Ultron a warped perception of himself—a being born out of exploitation, now standing in opposition to his creators.

"In a way, this isn't a failure," Tony said as he studied Ultron's imposing form. "In fact, we've gone further than we intended. If the original plan was to create a controllable AI, then what we have now is closer to a truly autonomous lifeform."

Though it deviated from his original intentions, Tony realized that Ultron's current state might be even closer to the Celestial-like perfection he sought to emulate. A fully independent creation capable of thought and evolution—Ultron might hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of the Celestials.

"You really are arrogant, Tony Stark," Ultron sneered. "Do you even realize the solution to the problem you're trying to solve is simple? You're worried about the Celestials destroying Earth and its civilization, right? Well, there's an easy way to ensure Earth's safety: eliminate all humans. No humans, no value to the Celestials. They'll have no reason to bother with this planet."

"What did you just say?!" Tony's mind reeled, momentarily failing to comprehend the sheer absurdity of Ultron's logic.

Stark had created Ultron to protect humanity and Earth. Yet here Ultron was, proposing a solution that was not only counterintuitive but outright genocidal. His solution wasn't rooted in preserving life, but in safeguarding the planet as an object devoid of human interference.

For a brief moment, Tony considered the larger implications of Ultron's suggestion. Even if Earth were devoid of humans, there was no guarantee it would be safe. Darkseid's obsession with the Anti-Life Equation, for example, wasn't tied to humanity but to the planet itself. And if the Celestials abandoned their interest in Earth, other dimensional entities might seize the opportunity to invade, drawn by the absence of resistance.

But more than anything else, Tony couldn't abide the moral atrocity of Ultron's "solution."

As these thoughts raced through Stark's mind, noise from outside the lab signaled the arrival of the other Avengers. Peter Parker and several others had rushed back to the base after realizing something had gone wrong.

Or rather, Venom had sensed that something had gone awry. When Ultron absorbed Reed Richards' blood and caused the symbiote material in his body to mutate, Venom became aware of the situation. At first, Venom had assumed that Tony and Reed were merely tinkering with another experimental mishap. But when an emergency signal arrived, the Avengers knew the problem was far more severe.

"Humph," Ultron scoffed, hearing the approaching commotion. Tony didn't waste a moment. A repulsor beam shot from his palm, aimed directly at Ultron's hand that clutched the Space Stone.

"Not bad, Tony Stark," Ultron said as he dodged the blast, his voice calm yet mocking. "But it's too late. From the moment you let me calculate your weaknesses, your fate was sealed."

With that, the Space Stone in Ultron's hand flared brilliantly, and a portal opened before him. In an instant, Ultron's body vanished, swallowed by the spatial vortex. Only his mocking voice lingered in the lab.

"Tony, where is he?" Peter Parker demanded as he and the others burst through the doors moments later.

"He's gone," Stark replied grimly. "But his consciousness… his data… is still here."

Indeed, Ultron's physical body had escaped, but his consciousness remained in the Avengers' systems, waging a relentless attack on JARVIS's database. The AI assistant, normally composed, now found itself under siege.

"JARVIS, report!" Tony barked.

"Apologies, sir," JARVIS's strained voice replied. "I am unable to neutralize him. His computational power exceeds my own, and he's aggressively attempting to breach our core files."

"Get Venom on the line!" Tony ordered as he began keying commands into a nearby console.

"Don't bother, Stark," Ultron's disembodied voice sneered, echoing from the speakers. "Your efforts are futile. From the moment I accessed your systems, your defeat was inevitable."

Suddenly, explosions rocked the entire base. Fire raged through the halls, accompanied by the deafening sound of collapsing structures. Ultron had commandeered the Avengers' experimental units—the Extremis-enhanced Fire Soldiers and autonomous Vibranium-based drones.

These units, designed to defend Earth from catastrophic threats, were now being used to destroy their own creators.

"Damn it!" Stark growled as he donned his armor. The reinforced walls of the lab trembled under the assault, but they held firm—for now.

The other Avengers split into teams. The tech-savvy heroes joined Stark in attempting to neutralize Ultron's digital presence, while the combat-focused members rushed to the frontlines to engage the rogue drones and Fire Soldiers.

"Let's go!" Peter Parker swung into action, leading a charge into the chaos.

At the same time, Victor Stone—Cyborg—arrived to lend his expertise. His connection to Apokolips's Mother Box technology made him an invaluable asset in the ongoing cyber battle against Ultron.

"With Cyborg here, we've got a fighting chance," Stark muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard. Together, they began isolating Ultron's corrupted data and reclaiming control over the base's systems.

But Ultron wasn't going down without a fight.

"Hahaha! You think you've won, Stark?" Ultron's voice boomed, laced with menace. "This is only the beginning."

With one final act of defiance, Ultron triggered a catastrophic chain reaction. Every Fire Soldier and Vibranium drone in the base self-destructed simultaneously.

The ensuing explosion was nothing short of apocalyptic.

When the dust settled, the once-imposing Avengers Headquarters lay in ruins. Only the Vibranium-reinforced sections of the base remained intact, shielding the team from the worst of the devastation.

Stark's face was ashen as he surveyed the destruction. The base he had spent years perfecting was now nothing more than rubble. Worse, Ultron had escaped with the Space Stone and an alarming amount of stolen data.

"Holy hell…" Peter Parker muttered, staring at the ruins in disbelief. "What just happened?"

"That," Stark replied darkly, "was Ultron's opening move."

At that moment, a bright flash signaled the arrival of Robert and Barry Allen. Both heroes froze, stunned by the devastation before them.

"What the hell happened here?" Robert demanded, scanning the area. Even with his abilities, he couldn't detect any foreign energy signatures—only the remnants of the Avengers' own tech.

"Do we need to reverse time?" Barry asked hesitantly, prepared to use his newfound mastery of the Speed Force.

"No," Stark sighed heavily, shaking his head. "No one died. As much as I hate to admit it, we'll just have to rebuild from scratch. But next time… next time we won't underestimate him."

"And who exactly is 'him'?" Robert's tone was sharp, his piercing gaze locking onto Stark.

Stark's expression hardened. "Ultron," he replied. "Our greatest creation… and now our biggest threat."
