The sight that greeted Jack made him open his eyes wide in horror. Aliens, whether wounded or luckily unscathed, were collapsing, their breaths, no more intense than his, going out like flames being snuffed out.
The pain of his heart being crushed just now came back like a phantom, ghostly but vivid, almost making him hold his chest in search of relief.
He had never been so glad he had evolved beyond his previous level. Just one step short, and he would have been among the casualties as collateral damage after friendly fire. It was like being saved from the abyss because of just one step taken faster than the others.
*Whoosh* *Whoosh* *Whoosh* *Whoosh*
The sound of displaced air made him snap his head back again, and his heart stopped dropping. It remained suspended as he looked at the survivors, most of whom were stronger than him, running with their tails between their legs, some quite literally.
