"Because it's the Roran Dragon Vein that allows you to travel through time and space, to avoid accidents, try not to leave Roran. I'll figure out the rest," Mutsuki reminded them.
Taking Naruto to the battlefield in the Land of Grass would make it easier to meet Jiraiya, but if the distance causes a disconnection from the Roran Dragon Vein and they can't return, that would cause big trouble.
In fact, for Mutsuki, having an extra Naruto in the world is a good thing. That way, he doesn't have to deliberately figure out how to become Nagato's sensei. He can just directly use the fifth disciple slot for Naruto.
Furthermore, the current Naruto already has considerable strength. With Mutsuki's guidance and by learning Sage Mode, he could directly become a huge asset.
But for another world, it's a bit unfortunate. The lack of Naruto's power would lead the ninja world toward an unknown outcome, so the best candidate for Mutsuki's fifth disciple is still Nagato for now.
"I'll be careful, Brother Mutsuki. No matter the result, I really appreciate your help," Naruto said gratefully.
Even if, in the end, Mutsuki tells him that there's no way to meet Jiraiya, Naruto wouldn't blame Mutsuki, because he knows it's something Mutsuki tried hard to do but just couldn't succeed.
Even though it's their first meeting and they're not from the same time, Mutsuki still chose to help them. Clearly, someone like Mutsuki wouldn't be someone who would brush off a promise.
"Thank you for your trouble, Mutsuki-sama," Yamato said respectfully.
The more he interacted with Mutsuki, the more he felt it was a pity. Such an outstanding ninja, yet...
"You don't need to call me 'sama,' just call me Mutsuki. I'm not your superior or anything," Mutsuki said with a gentle smile.
In terms of age, Yamato is seven years older than him, so Yamato doesn't need to address him as "sama" in any way.
"Alright, Mutsuki-san," Yamato thought for a moment before responding.
He felt that calling Mutsuki by his name directly was still a bit inappropriate, after all, Mutsuki was Kakashi-senpai's teacher and a respected ninja, so Yamato still added honorifics.
Facing Yamato's persistence, Mutsuki didn't say anything further and soon left the room.
Hearing the door open and then close, the three people hiding in the cupboard let out a sigh of relief.
Just now, they were worried about being discovered by Mutsuki and dared to keep their breathing at a minimum, feeling extremely tense.
Obito originally wanted to open the cupboard door and leave, but was stopped by Kakashi.
Obito looked at Kakashi in confusion, while Kakashi simply shook his head. They waited for three minutes before stepping out.
"After all, it's Yumi-sensei, we have to be cautious," Kakashi explained.
He was worried that the noise from opening the cupboard door and leaving might alert Mutsuki.
Obito scratched his head. Kakashi did understand this aspect a bit, but Obito couldn't wait any longer. He nodded and ran over to Naruto and Yamato, asking:
"When exactly did Minato-sensei pass away, and what was the reason?"
He had almost heard everything while hiding in the cupboard, but unfortunately, he was interrupted by Rin. However, Obito didn't blame her, after all, Rin-chan was kind-hearted; how could she have any bad intentions?
Yamato didn't directly answer Obito's question but instead looked at Kakashi.
Strictly speaking, Yamato had made the decision to tell Kakashi everything, and then Kakashi had said he would carry everything alone. So now, Yamato wanted to know Kakashi's current stance.
Kakashi glanced at Obito's anxious face, then at Rin's worried expression, and fell into deep thought.
He didn't want Obito and Rin to get involved. After all, this was no small matter. Based on what Kakashi knew about them, they would undoubtedly feel a huge sense of guilt.
"Just say it directly," Kakashi took a deep breath and sat down beside Obito, speaking to Yamato.
Although he wanted to carry everything alone, Obito and Rin already knew some of the truth. If he were to send them away now, and later Kakashi failed to change history—if Mutsuki and Minato both died—Obito and Rin would undoubtedly fall into endless self-blame.
"Captain Yamato, please just tell us," Naruto also spoke up.
He could now fully understand Kakashi and the others' feelings. Just earlier, he had been eager to meet Jiraiya and reveal Jiraiya's future in order to change his fate of dying during a mission to gather intelligence.
"The Fourth Hokage died because of the Nine-Tails' rampage. It was not long after the war ended, about a year since the Third Great Ninja War that swept across the entire ninja world," Yamato began.
"This matter is highly classified, so I don't know much. I only know that the Fourth Hokage used his life to seal the rampaging Nine-Tails in order to protect the village," Yamato shared all the information he knew about the Fourth Hokage's death.
"The Nine-Tails, isn't that..." Naruto looked at his own body in shock, realizing the Nine-Tails was inside him.
"That's right, it's the Tailed Beast inside you," Yamato nodded and quickly reassured Naruto. "Naruto, you don't need to feel guilty about this. It's not your fault; this is the wrongdoing of the Tailed Beast inside you."
Yamato felt that it was unfair to place the sins of the Tailed Beast onto the Jinchuriki. When the Nine-Tails rampaged, Naruto might have still been an infant. How could he be responsible for that?
Naruto nodded gravely. Hearing that the Tailed Beast inside him was the one who killed the Fourth Hokage only strengthened his resolve to control the beast's power rather than let it rampage uncontrollably.
"The Nine-Tails rampage..." Kakashi silently took note of everything Yamato had said, planning to review the relevant materials later.
He knew a bit about the Tailed Beasts. They were weapons of war for the Five Great Nations, with each major ninja village possessing one or two. However, Kakashi didn't know much about the Tailed Beasts rampaging.
"Asuma-san died in battle just before we traveled here. In our time, there was a ninja organization called the Akatsuki Organization. All the members of Akatsuki were S-rank rogue ninjas from various ninja villages. They were after the Tailed Beasts from the major villages, and Asuma-san was killed by one of their members," Yamato explained.
Talking about Asuma's death made Yamato remember the times he spent with Asuma, sharing stories at the izakaya. The thought that he would never again be able to go to the izakaya with Asuma made Yamato's gaze darken.
Since the Fourth Hokage's death had already been mentioned, Yamato decided to also tell them about Asuma's death. After all, Kakashi and the others were trying to change history, and if they could change Asuma's death as well, it would be a happy outcome for everyone.
"A ninja organization made up of S-rank rogue ninjas," Kakashi thought for a moment, then pulled out a pen and scroll and started writing everything Yamato had said onto the scroll.
Since Asuma's death had happened shortly before Naruto and the others traveled here, it was still a ways off in the timeline. To avoid forgetting, Kakashi decided to record it.
Kakashi etched the words "Akatsuki Organization" into his mind. He thought that if he could eliminate the organization before it became too powerful, it would save a lot of effort.
A ninja organization couldn't be established overnight. According to Yamato's description, by their time, the Akatsuki Organization had already become incredibly strong and didn't care at all about offending the major ninja villages.
Kakashi boldly speculated that the Akatsuki Organization of the future might already exist in the ninja world, but was still building up its strength.
"Could the Nine-Tails rampage that caused Minato-sensei's death be related to the Akatsuki Organization?" Kakashi suddenly had a flash of insight, connecting the Nine-Tails rampage to the Akatsuki Organization.
Since Akatsuki's goal was the Tailed Beasts, the Nine-Tails in Konoha would naturally be one of their targets. However, Konoha was too strong, so their plot failed, only managing to cause Konoha some losses.
Kakashi slightly shook his head, suppressing all his chaotic thoughts. These matters required more information about the Tailed Beasts before he could continue thinking about them. Otherwise, it would just be baseless speculation.
"I'll confirm this with you again. You really don't know anything about Yumi-sensei, Obito, or Rin-chan?" Kakashi asked, looking into Yamato's eyes.
Although Yamato had already said he didn't know anything about Mutsuki and the others, back then, he hadn't yet made up his mind to help change history, so there was a possibility he might have been lying.
"I really want to help, but I honestly don't know," Yamato said helplessly.
Since he had made up his mind to change history, Yamato certainly wouldn't hide anything, but the truth was, he really didn't know about Mutsuki and the others.
"However, I can be certain that Mutsuki-san's death was likely much earlier than the Fourth Hokage's, most likely during the Third Great Ninja War," Yamato thought for a moment before offering his speculation.
A ninja as outstanding as Mutsuki could only have died too early, which was why he had no fame in later generations.
Had Mutsuki died after the war, with the ability and charisma he had shown, Yamato would have at least heard of him.
Kakashi's gaze flickered. Yamato's speculation made a lot of sense. War was incredibly dangerous, and even a powerful ninja like Mutsuki would struggle if surrounded by a ninja army.
"Damned war, I will definitely end it!" Obito gritted his teeth.
He had never liked war. His dream was to end it and become Hokage. Now that he knew Mutsuki might die in a war, Obito hated war even more.
Rin felt the same. Her greatest dream was to see the end of war. At this moment, she was deeply dissatisfied with her own weakness. If she were stronger, then Kakashi and Obito wouldn't have to worry about her safety in battle.
"As for Rin-chan and Obito, I can't say for sure. It could be because of the Third Great Ninja War, the Nine-Tails rampage, or possibly the wars with the Hidden Rock and Hidden Cloud later on," Yamato continued.
Compared to the powerful Mutsuki, Rin and Obito were still young, so Yamato found it hard to determine the exact time of their deaths.
After the Third Great Ninja War, peace did not immediately cover the entire ninja world. In fact, Konoha and the Hidden Cloud fought for several more years before signing a peace treaty, and there was also a war with the Hidden Rock during that time.
However, the intensity of these wars was not on the same scale as the Third Great Ninja War. A powerful ninja like Mutsuki would not fall in such wars.
At that time, Yamato was no longer very young, and if Mutsuki had survived until then, he would certainly have heard of Mutsuki's name.
"Please tell us more about the details of the Third Great Ninja War," Kakashi said bluntly.
He was the type of person who always prepared for the worst. Since it was possible that Obito and Rin died in the war, Kakashi assumed that, barring any accidents, the Mutsuki team would be reduced to just him by the end of the Third Great Ninja War.
Under these circumstances, Kakashi needed to gather more information about the war and analyze when exactly they had encountered danger during it.
"I don't know much about it, just the general outline," Yamato said somewhat awkwardly.
He did not participate in the Third Great Ninja War as a ninja; at that time, he was still undergoing secret training under Danzo.
And Yamato was not someone particularly interested in history, so he had not specifically studied the history of the Third Great Ninja War. Therefore, he didn't know much about it.
"Naruto, you must have learned about this in the Academy's history class, right? How about you tell us?" Yamato asked Naruto.
"Huh? The Third Great Ninja War? Did the school teach that? I don't know," Naruto replied, looking confused.
Obito looked at Naruto at that moment and felt an odd sense of déjà vu. The resemblance was too strong.
"Naruto, if I may ask, how are your theoretical grades usually?" Kakashi glanced at Obito and then asked Naruto.
"Usually dead last," Naruto replied, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Kakashi showed a knowing expression. Naruto's performance just now couldn't be more similar to Obito's—no, it was exactly the same.
If Naruto's surname weren't Uzumaki and he weren't blond, Kakashi might have suspected that Naruto and Obito were somehow related.
Obito felt a wave of frustration. To think he had to deal with a hopeless underachiever like this—it was infuriating. At that moment, he desperately wished Naruto was a genius like Kakashi or Shisui, someone who could casually score full marks on any test.
Kakashi shifted his gaze back to Yamato. Clearly, he couldn't rely on the underachieving Naruto. Although Yamato didn't know much, even a little more information was helpful.
"During the Third Great Ninja War, Konoha fought the other four major ninja villages, and the enemy forces repeatedly invaded the Land of Fire," Yamato said, reluctantly sharing what he could remember about the war.
He didn't know many details, but he could still recall some of the more significant events.
"The four major ninja villages!" Kakashi's brow furrowed involuntarily. He had thought that Konoha facing war with the three major villages was the worst-case scenario. He hadn't expected the Hidden Sand Village would also eventually join the conflict against Konoha.
This made Mutsuki's death during the Third Great Ninja War seem even more plausible. With so many powerful enemies, Konoha would certainly have been lacking in manpower, and as a strong ninja, Mutsuki would have borne much of the pressure.
This made Kakashi feel even more urgency inside. His current strength was still too weak—being able to defeat an ordinary Jonin wasn't enough to make any impact in a ninja world war.
"Doesn't this mean all the major ninja villages ganged up on Konoha? That's just too despicable," Obito muttered, wanting to tell those big ninja villages to try fighting one-on-one.
"While Konoha faced the most challenges, the other ninja villages weren't united against Konoha. While fighting Konoha, the Hidden Cloud was also at war with the Sand, and the Hidden Rock was at war with the Hidden Cloud. Even the Third Raikage died in a siege by Hidden Rock ninjas," Yamato explained.
If the four major ninja villages had truly worked together to attack the Land of Fire and take down Konoha, there was no way Konoha could have withstood it. Konoha during the Third Great Ninja War didn't have the kind of power that could match the "God of Ninjas."
Hearing that the Third Raikage died in the Great Ninja War, Kakashi once again grasped the true danger and brutality of war.
"Sorry, this is all I know," Yamato said apologetically after speaking for about five minutes.
He felt that if it were Kakashi-senpai who had traveled back in time, he would surely be able to help the past version of himself change history. But as for Yamato... his words were of little consequence.
Kakashi put his pen away, rolled up the scroll, and then thanked Yamato sincerely. "You don't need to apologize. This is something we should be saying to you."
Kakashi knew very well how outrageous what he was trying to do was—he was foolishly attempting to change history, to change fate. If their actions failed, and both Konoha and the ninja world fell into a worse outcome, then Yamato, Naruto, and the others would have unknowingly become scapegoats in history, doing nothing and yet bearing the weight of failure. Kakashi felt a bit guilty toward them for that.
"Kakashi-senpai, please do your best. I believe you can succeed," Yamato encouraged.
If it weren't for the fact that the person making the request was the trusted Kakashi-senpai, Yamato's decision might have been different.
"Although Kakashi-sensei has a lot of bad habits, he's never let us down. I believe in you, little Kakashi-sensei. You'll be fine. When it's over, I'll treat Brother Mutsuki and all of you to ramen," Naruto added with a smile.
Naruto was now a little excited about going back. He hoped that when he returned, he would be able to see that man, who would always break his ice pop in half and give him a piece. He hoped that when he went back, he would once again see Mutsuki with a warm smile on his face, and that Mutsuki's class would be as lively as always.
"Don't act like it's all thanks to Kakashi. He was once just my subordinate, after all. Yumi-sensei, Minato-sensei, Rin-chan, and Asuma... I will create a future where they all exist!" Obito said with determination.
He was determined to protect everyone he cared about, to protect his friends. For that, he was willing to give everything.
"Are you going to brag about winning just once for the rest of your life?" Kakashi said, speechless.
He felt that losing to Obito was one of the biggest setbacks in his life.
"Just say whether I won or not," Obito replied, as if winning even once was still a win.
"You two..." Rin looked at the two of them helplessly. "Go back to sleep already. We still have to continue the mission tomorrow."
Obito and Kakashi knew when to stop, and after a few exchanges, they each went back to their own rooms.
Things had to be done one step at a time. Although they carried the heavy burden of changing history, they still needed to finish the tasks at hand first.
Naruto looked at Kakashi and Obito and thought of the time he spent with Sasuke. Their class really was so similar, though Sakura wasn't as gentle as Rin.
After the three left, Naruto and Yamato quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, everyone got to work.
Kakashi and the others continued investigating Anrokuzan, Naruto and Yamato searched for Mukade's whereabouts, while Mutsuki went to seek the help of Roran Queen.
"Have you made any progress?" Roran Queen first inquired about Mutsuki's mission progress.
Mutsuki didn't directly answer her question but instead asked Roran Queen one in return.
"Prime Minister Anrokuzan's is a Ninja, right?" Mutsuki asked.
Roran Queen hesitated for a moment before nodding.
Although Roran didn't have many Ninjas, Roran Queen wasn't completely ignorant of the term.
"I've indeed found some information. Anrokuzan's strength as a Ninja far exceeds the scope of a B-Rank mission," Mutsuki said calmly.
Although he hadn't done the investigation himself, and neither Kakashi nor Obito had turned up anything, for Mutsuki, who was familiar with the plot, making up some intel wasn't a problem.
Roran Queen was a sharp person, and she immediately understood Mutsuki's point. The task information had been incorrect, leading to the wrong mission rank. In this case, the Ninjas carrying out the mission were perfectly entitled to walk away.
"Apologies, that was my oversight. I'm not very familiar with the Ninja world, nor do I know what level he's at among them," Roran Queen immediately apologized.
"I can offer additional payment," she quickly suggested as a solution.
Seeing that he had successfully deceived Roran Queen, Mutsuki maintained a calm demeanor and continued, "In addition to the payment, there's another issue. Your Majesty, is there any other information about Anrokuzan that you haven't shared with us?"
The Queen's expression didn't change, and she responded, "No, if I knew that much, I wouldn't have asked you to investigate."
She had indeed concealed some information, but this was something she couldn't reveal because it concerned the safety of Roran, as well as the secret behind Roran's rapid development in the past two years.
The latter was not as important, but the former was.
Mutsuki silently observed the Queen. Three minutes later, he spoke: "Anrokuzan is a Hidden Sand Village Ninja skilled in Puppet Jutsu. I've discovered that he's secretly stockpiling many Puppets meant for combat. I'm not sure what his intentions are."
"Puppets for combat?" The Queen's expression changed slightly.
The information she had concealed was about her past collaboration with Anrokuzan.
Roran had a vast underground energy source called the Dragon Vein, but this powerful energy was not uncontrollable. The royal family of Roran had a chance of awakening the ability to control the Dragon Vein, and the Queen herself was one of those awakened. It was this ability that allowed her to become Queen.
It could even be said that it was because of this ability that the Roran royal family existed.
Because Anrokuzan demonstrated extraordinary abilities, the Roran Queen initially agreed to cooperate with him in order to harness the energy of the Dragon Vein to promote Roran's development.
Although Anrokuzan had always been cautious in his dealings, he was ultimately a rogue ninja, and the sharp-eyed Roran Queen eventually noticed something off and decided to terminate the cooperation.
During this period, the Queen kept a close watch on Anrokuzan, but he didn't show any signs of suspicion, behaving like a Prime Minister truly dedicated to Roran's development and the well-being of its people.
However, the Queen trusted her own judgment, and so, she eventually issued a mission to the Ninja Village to investigate Anrokuzan.
The efficiency of the Ninjas exceeded her expectations, and in just one day, they made such significant discoveries.
"Also, there's something else I need your help with, Queen. Yesterday, I encountered another team of Konoha companions. They took a mission to capture a rogue ninja from the Sand Village. Their investigation revealed that he had arrived in Roran about two years ago, so they came to Roran to search for relevant information." Mutsuki continued.
After hearing Mutsuki's words, the Queen's expression changed once again.
According to Mutsuki's investigation, Anrokuzan was a Hidden Sand Village Ninja, and he had arrived in Roran exactly two years ago.
Making that connection, the Queen instantly realized that Anrokuzan must be the Sand rogue ninja, Mukade.
If it were someone else, the Queen might have suspected it for a moment, but Mutsuki was the Ninja she had hired. Mutsuki had no reason to harm her; otherwise, Konoha's reputation would be ruined. After all, she was still a queen.
"I suspect Anrokuzan is the Sand rogue ninja Mukade," Mutsuki directly voiced what the Queen was thinking.
"There aren't many rogue ninjas from the Sand, and even fewer who specialize in Puppet Jutsu. The possibility of Anrokuzan being Mukade is very high."
"I have a Sensing Secret Jutsu. I can sense a powerful energy beneath Roran. Maybe Anrokuzan has been staying in Roran because he's after that powerful energy," Mutsuki continued his reasoning.
The Queen finally lost her composure. Her face turned pale, and she stared at Mutsuki in shock.
Although Mutsuki had only been investigating for a day, it seemed as if he knew more than the Queen herself.
When she thought back to what Mutsuki had said earlier, the Queen realized that her attempts to hide the truth had likely already been seen through by him. Mutsuki had simply been polite enough not to reveal it.
"I'm sorry, I did conceal something from you," the Roran Queen said sincerely, bowing to Mutsuki in apology.
At this point, continuing to deceive him served no purpose, so the Queen chose to be honest and open with Mutsuki.
"I really didn't mean to harm you. I hope you don't take offense. The truth is, this matter concerns the safety of Roran," Roran Queen explained.
"Under Roran lies a powerful energy known as the Dragon Vein. It is incredibly strong, and only the royal family of Roran can control it. To prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, it has always been a closely guarded secret of Roran."
The Queen wasn't sure how the Dragon Vein would be perceived by ninjas, but to ordinary people, it was an immensely powerful force.
Even a small amount of Dragon Vein power is enough to turn an ordinary person into a superhuman capable of taking on ten opponents. Of course, the consequences are equally terrifying, as that person will soon die.
This is the reason why the royal family of Roran has been able to maintain power; they can control the Dragon Vein and form a team of superhuman assassins.
However, because the cost is so severe, the Roran royal family rarely uses the Dragon Vein. After all, the population of Roran is small, and every person in Roran is a valuable resource.
"I once collaborated with Anrokuzan. I used the Dragon Vein power to assist him, and in return, he used that power to help Roran develop," the Roran Queen explained.
"But one day, I noticed something was off with him, so I ended the cooperation. Now that I think about it, it was probably because he was a rogue ninja," the Queen sighed.
She had once thought that Roran was blessed by the heavens, that this would mark the beginning of Roran's rise. But in the end, there was no such thing as a free lunch.
"That makes sense now. Anrokuzan was probably indeed the Sand rogue ninja Mukade," Mutsuki confirmed.
He wasn't planning to waste too much time on this mission. The sooner he handled Anrokuzan's issue, the sooner he could spare some time to guide Naruto in his training.
"However, Anrokuzan has a high reputation among the people of Roran. I will continue to investigate and gather more evidence before making it public," Mutsuki said finally.
He had come today just to expose Anrokuzan's true nature to the Queen and wasn't planning to resolve Anrokuzan's issue immediately.
If Anrokuzan turned out to be unpredictable and self-destructive, Naruto and the others might have to leave, and Mutsuki would wait for the right moment to act.
Since there was no problem with the Queen now, he could make a move whenever the opportunity arose.
"That sounds even better," Roran Queen said, satisfied.
At that moment, Roran Queen felt an increased sense of goodwill toward Konoha. Konoha ninjas were incredibly reliable—not only efficient but also considerate of their client's concerns.
If she needed to hire someone again in the future, Konoha would definitely be her first choice. The price was no issue; Konoha ninjas were truly effective.
After bidding farewell to the Queen, Mutsuki returned to study the Dragon Vein.
Upon arrival, Mutsuki immediately activated his Sensing to the fullest, turning on everything from Transparent World to Byakugan, and with his Enlightenment skill refreshed, he applied it to himself.
Perhaps it was due to the Enlightenment state, but Mutsuki felt something different today compared to yesterday.
In his Sensing, the powerful energy source was tightly connected to the land of Roran, with both influencing each other.
This led Mutsuki to a speculation: Could the Divine Tree absorved energy from the planet, similar to how Dragon Vein Chakra works?
If that was the case, then this Dragon Vein Chakra couldn't be used too much. If overused, the entire Roran might be in danger.
By evening, Mutsuki returned to the inn and gathered with the others, sharing the results of his investigation.
"So, Anrokuzan is Mukade after all. You were right, Mutsuki, he really did travel to a time before ours," Naruto said, looking at Mutsuki with admiration.
In his eyes, Mutsuki truly seemed omnipotent. Based on today's results, Mutsuki's deductions from yesterday were almost entirely correct—he was almost clairvoyant.
"Mutsuki-san, your speed is truly incredible," Yamato marveled.
It had been another uneventful day for them, and Yamato had prepared for a prolonged struggle. He never expected that upon returning, Mutsuki would directly announce that he had found Mukade.
"Well, that makes our mission a lot easier," Obito realized that now they could act together.
He wasn't too surprised—after all, this was Mutsuki Sage, it was only reasonable.
"Now we just need to defeat Anrokuzan—no, I mean Mukade—right?" Obito said, a eager look on his face.
Kakashi shook his head and said, "Didn't you listen to Yumi-sensei? This is just a hypothesis based on the current data. We still need to investigate further."
"The enemy has been accumulating power in Roran for two years. Now the enemy is in the open, but we are in the dark. We can use this opportunity to learn more about their current strength before we make our move," Mutsuki explained.
"We can also do some pre-battle training to improve our combat power."
Mutsuki briefly shared his thoughts. Naruto and Yamato would take turns battling Mutsuki's team, helping Mutsuki train his disciples. Then Mutsuki would use their battles to guide Naruto and Yamato.
Yamato's eyes lit up—wasn't this a perfect opportunity to openly beat up Kakashi-senpai?
