Chapter 45 - Aiding Prey

Mikasa yawned before she took a sip of cold apple juice from her transparent plastic cup. She was now in the break room, sitting on one of the three sofa chairs.

It's been a little over an hour since she became an assistant, and she's been into 7 rooms since then. She remembered when one of the patients had a laceration so deep that she could nearly see the bone. Another patient had major internal bleeding, where half of his right thigh had a purple discoloration. Mikasa felt like vomiting, but this uneasiness was necessary for her. She had to get used to seeing things like this.

She was watching Eren's team doing their exam while Alice was making more of her mixture in another room nearby. Mikasa was curious about the process of her mixture. She stood up, interlaced her fingers and stretched her back before she heard a knock on the door.

When she opened the door, it was Madison carrying a tray holding a dozen metal tin jars. Her medical instructor entered the room and placed the tray on the circular table.

"So, ready to continue?"

"Yes, but I have a question," She raised her hand and then pointed at the metal jars. "I've been curious about what ingredients you use to make it?"

"I use a high-quality First-Aid Medicine mix made by the association, a tad of armorskin, might pill powder, water and a special ingredient," she winked.

"Special ingredient? What's this 'special ingredient'?" Mikasa asked. "I asked you before, but you didn't tell me."

Madison rubbed her neck as she averted her gaze. "Because it's embarrassing, my sister uses it all freely, but I tend to use it more covertly."

Mikasa glanced at the jars. "Is it a healing ability?"

"It is, but where it comes from is the issue."

Mikasa began to think of possible substances that come out of the human body. She knew that it couldn't be anything too disgusting, like feces or urine, because the viscous orange mixture lacked any gross smells.

' So what could it be?' Mikasa thought. 'It could be snot, given its viscous properties, or it could be tears, but tears don't have a smell, so how would I prove that?'

"Well, it can't be too bad," Mikasa said. "How gross is it?"

Madison leaned in and whispered her ability in her ear before she leaned back. Mikasa nodded, a bit unfazed by the revelation.

"It's not that bad," Mikasa said. "It's actually better than I thought. Saliva is the easiest body fluid that we can produce."

"What did you think it was?"

"Maybe tears?" Mikasa guessed.

Madison chuckled. "I wish it were. Just don't tell anyone about it, okay? My colleagues might get mad at me if they find out I was spitting in the mixture."

"Lips sealed."

"Good, now let's get back to work."

Mikasa grabbed the tray as Madison went to open the door. She heard a short shriek before Mikasa turned her head, seeing Sydney standing in front of the door. Madison placed a hand on her chest and exhaled.

"Geez, you scared me! Mikasa, is she your friend or something?"

Mikasa looked at Sydney, who was waving at her with an innocent smile on her face. "Um…well…"

"I am," Sydney said proudly. "Ain't that right, Mimi?"

"Excuse me?Mimi?"

"Listen, kid," Madison began. "Your friend is busy right now. Head up to the break room, please."

"Why?" Sydney asked. "She's not supposed to be here, but she is relaxing in the break room, which is for employees only."

"Kid, go upstairs right now," Madison said coldly.

Sydney looked at Mikasa. She shook her head, refusing to aid Sydney in her argument.

"Go now," Madison warned, raising her voice to a serious tone.

Sydney looked at Mikasa before her face darkened. She turned and walked away, leading the older nurse to sigh.

"Are you okay?" Mikasa asked.

"Yeah, let's just…get back to work," Madison said.

Mikasa pushed the trolley of equipment as she and Madsion were making their way to their next patient. Mikasa took a glance at the tablet to see who it would be. Her eyes widened in shock, seeing who the next patient was.

'Are you kidding me?! Him?!'

"It says here that he suffered only mild burns. So what we need to do is just wipe him down with some water and then place some ointment," Madsion said, looking at her tablet.

"Do you mind if I sit this one out?"

"Hmm? Why?"

"Well, I'm not very fond of the patient inside," Mikasa explained. She leaned in and whispered to her, "He was one of my bullies in junior high."

"Okay, and?" Madison said, her tone was calm and stern.

"What?"

"Just because you don't like the patient doesn't mean you can't treat him," Madison said. "Trust me, I did my fair share of helping people that didn't deserve it, but I still did it because that's my job. If you can't accept that, then…"

Mikasa looked down and gripped the trolley so tightly that her veins were visible in her hands. She took a deep breath before looking up.

"Fine, let's do it."

Madison nodded. "Alright then, let's go."

Madison opened the door. Mikasa saw the tall teen lying in his bed, watching TV. He was looking at one of his burns, holding a wet white rag as he wiped the burn on his right arm up and down.

"It seems you know what to do, Mr. Braun," Madison pointed out his method.

"Yeah, my mom told me to run cold water on burns, but I'd rather just use a wet cloth or something to calm the burn," Reiner said.

He looked up to see Mikasa. He gave her a smug smile, but she was mostly unfazed by his gaze as she gripped the handle of the trolley tightly.

"Wow, Mikasa!" Reiner said, "I didn't know you worked with the doctors."

"Let's get this over with…" Mikasa grumbled.

The two nurses pulled the sheets down, seeing that his legs were covered in wet towels. When Mikasa lifted the wet towels, a burst of steam nearly hit her as the red blotches on his calves and lower thigh slowly dissapating. Reiner gave Mikasa a fake, gentle smile.

Mikasa grumbled curse words in Hizurian as she and Madison put on some latex gloves. She felt uncomfortable having his golden-coloured eyes looking at her; she wanted to slap his leg, just to make him feel pain, but she held her anger in as she and Madison continued their treatment on his calves.

Mikasa grabbed a clean rag from the trolley, dipped it in the soap and gently scrubbed his left calf as she took a glance at Reiner, who was looking at the television.

'Ugh, I forgot that Reiner has the same genetic mutation… ' Mikasa looked at Reiner's wounds before she turned her attention to the television, noticing Eren and his team attempting their test, currently in the midst of a battle against a Tigrex.

Mikasa heard Reiner's bed creaking a bit. She quickly glanced, noticing Reiner shifting a bit in his bed.

"Focus on scrubbing," She heard Reiner say in a low whisper.

"Watch it," she said in cold anger.

"Come on, Mikasa, focus," Madison gave Mikasa a serious look.

Mikasa glanced at Reiner with rage before she continued to clean the burn wounds. Madison opened a jar of her special ointment and gave Mikasa a small plastic spatula. She scooped some before she wiped the mixture on her gloved hand, before rubbing her hands together and gently rubbing them on his legs.

She made a quick side glance to see Reiner giving her a smug smile.

'I wish the explosion had taken off his legs.' Mikasa thought.

After they finished coating his legs in the mixture, they wrapped his legs in gauze.

"Thank you, nurse!Thank you,Mikasa!" Reiner, as Madison and Mikasa left the room and the older doctor closed the door.

"Well, wasn't that experience nice and quick?" Madison said, trying to boost Mikasa's spirits.

"It felt like hell. A long, gruelling hell," Mikasa said with disdain in her voice.

"Well, luckily. We're done with him, we don't have to worry about him for now, especially since he somehow has the same genetic mutation as you." Madison took a curious glance. "Maybe he's a distant relative of-"

"No, he's not," Mikasa glared at Madison, unamused by her assumption. "I don't want him to be."

"Just because you don't want him to be, doesn't mean it's not a possibility," Madison said.

Mikasa sighed as she crossed her arms."So who's next?"

"Her name is Lavisha Ojun. She's from Team 15, who suffered a gash on her leg from fighting a Caeserber."

"That bucktooth beast?" Mikasa remembered a glimpse of the battle when the fanged beast picked up a broken tree with its large front teeth.

One of the teammates was having an unnerving amount of fun. She was flailing her arms and mocking the sounds of the fanged beast. The other three were confused at her confidence but still stood on standby, becoming viewers to her cocky escapade. Even when the Caeserber sliced a gash on her outer thigh, she still wasn't taking the beast seriously.

When they entered the room, the dark skinned female sat on her bed impatiently before her dark brown eyes went from the television down to the nurses by her door.

"Hello? Can I help you?" Lavisha said with a thick Meruidiem accent.

"Actually, we're here to help you with your wound on your leg," Madison said to the Merudiem woman. "I'm Madison, and my assistant here is Mikasa."

Mikasa calmly raised her hand before Madison continued, "According to our report, you suffered a deep wound on your leg, and we're here to patch you up."

Lavisha laughed, "I have dealt with worse injuries than this!"

The merudiem woman lifted her left arm, revealing scars all over her limb. "I am a hunter in my motherland. I have experience dealing with monsters more vicious and aggressive than that Caeserber!"

"Have you dealt with one before?" Mikasa asked

Lavisha laughed again, "Of course, I have dealt with one before! But in my land, most of them are yellow and more aggressive, especially about their water. It's scarce, especially in desert areas of my land, so they take their supply very seriously."

'Let's hope that I don't have to go to that land anytime soon,' Mikasa thought.

"So…do you want us to patch you up or…?" Madison asked.

Lavisha crossed her arms and grinned with ferocious confidence before laughing once more, "If you must. After all, I need my leg ready for my next contest."

Mikasa and Madison put on latex gloves before Madison carefully removed Lavisha's bloody bandages on her thigh.

"The Caeserber got you deep, luckily the surgeons stitched you up, huh? " Madison commented, analysing the stitches on her wound.

Lavisha scoffed, diminishing the impact of her injury. "That was because I was not focused enough. I was 'playing with my food' as hunters would say. When I got my ability, I wrestled with them for training."

Mikasa got curious because Lavisha never used her ability for her entire test. If Mikasa were to go against her for a future test, she would be a big challenge to overcome, if she can even overcome it.

'But I have to,' Mikasa thought. 'If I can find out her ability, I could find a way to plan out a strategy in case I go up against her.'

"Your ability? You must have a strong ability to be wrestling for them for training," Mikasa complemented.

Lavisha laughed, "Of course! With an ability like mine, fighting monsters is the best way to learn and train."

"And what ability do you carry?" Mikasa asked, trying to slowly and hopefully pry the answer out of her.

Lavisha placed her right index finger on her lips. " I won't tell my secret to my potential prey."

"Excuse me?"

"If we fight against each other in the near future, I would be at a disadvantage, Ms.Copycat."

Mikasa crossed her arms, "So, you were paying- "

"Attention?" Lavisha chuckled. "Of course, I was. Every candidate here has the potential to be my prey, even my own teammates could have to fight me. You'd better hope that you don't get to fight me."

Lavisha and Mikasa glared at each other before the dark skinned huntress grew a cocky smile.
