AUTHOR POV:
Hayat came back from the university and called Ahad to ask him about his meeting, but the calls were forwarded to voice mail instead, Hayat left some text...
Bubba: Bubba, let me know how your meeting went.
Bubba: Bubba, I'm going to Mama's house today, I'm having an off tomorrow, so I'll spend time there with them.
Bubba: Please eat on time, okay, take care:)
Bubba: And don't forget to text me back after you get free, hmm... bye.
After texting Ahad, Hayat went to get changed into her favorite flower-printed white sundress. Coming out, she applied her favorite moisturizer while taking her acne cream in her bag, getting her hair tied in a ponytail since she didn't know how to braid her hair.
She remembered the memory of Ahad... "Meri Jaan, are you ready to leave for our outing?" Asked Ahad after coming out of the washroom, cleaning his face with a towel as he looked at her, who was looking frustrated, her face was scrunched up as she tried to tie her hair in a braid, clearly not paying attention to her surroundings.
Ahad moved towards her, holding her waist from behind he looked at her face from the mirror, seeing her eyes softening while looking at him.
She said, "I'm sorry, just give me some time, I'll be ready soon." Hayat gave her husband pleading eyes not knowing how much his heart was melting.
"Are you struggling to braid your hair?" Asked Ahad as continued to look at her, loving the way her white sundress looked with his black shirt.
"I know how to braid my hair. It's just it's tangling a lot when I'm braiding them because I don't know." She ended up saying nothing like he wouldn't understand her.
Ahad circled his hands around her waist and said, "I know what you're trying to say is, that when you tie your hair, the reason you can't make it into a braid repeatedly is because a few strands keep slipping out" Ahad glance at her side face as her face lights up as she turned her face towards him.
Suddenly stunned because the gap between their face was so little that made Hayat saw her eyes clearing into his black eyes as she gulped and turned towards the mirror, nodding her head, the closeness was distant once again but the neck turning red could tell Hayat how much it affected Ahad.
Ahad cleared his throat, "Then sit down and let me tie your hair in a braid," she looked at his face as he started to comb her hair, then braiding it without tangling her hair.
"You're good at it, Ahad, how many women hair have you braided before me, hmm?" Hayat asked looking at him through the mirror, if he hadn't known. How her tone was slightly low, he'd probably thought this was one of her curiosity questions but nope.
"Just Eira" Ahad said looking at her with a smile as he continued, "Don't get jealous baby, I'm all yours" making her heart race Ahad did her hair, getting her up he placed a peck on her forehead, "Let's go begum" taking her hand they walked out.
Hayat felt empty without her husband, whom she had married for three months or more, she started to feel the bond that she never thought would be there between them, and she started to love him a little more than before.
She got up and took her phone, taking some pictures of herself she sent them to Ahad with the caption, "Come back soon bubba, your home is missing you." remembering how Ahad said that she is his home, she is the one who made the house his home again.
She took her bag, with the shopping bags which contained her Saree, wanting to know how to wear it from her Mama, she made her way out of the house, getting inside her car she started the engine and drove towards the destination.
Ahad came out of the airport as early as he could after checking out. It was currently 1 am, and turning his phone on, he saw his phone flooded with messages and calls.
From his family, seeing the last call was just half an hour ago, he thought something serious had happened, clicking on Hayat's chat he read the messages from top to bottom.
[Afternoon, 4:30 pm]
My Wife: Bubba, let me know how your meeting went.
My Wife: Bubba, I'm going to Mama's house today, I'm having an off tomorrow, so I'll spend time there with them.
My Wife: Please eat on time, okay, take care:)
My Wife: And don't forget to text me back after you get free, hmm... bye.
[Evening, 7:15 pm]
My wife: [pictures of herself] Come back soon, Bubba, your home is missing you.
My wife: Well, do I look beautiful?
[Night, 9:15 pm]
My wife: Ahad, are you upset about meeting? Did something happen there? Why aren't you attending my calls and not even responding to my messages?
[Night, 9:30 pm]
My wife: Ahad I'm telling Mama and Dad about your behavior, I'm worried.
[Missed calls, 10]
My wife: Bubba, you can't ignore me like this. You told me you will always protect me, you'll always be there for me, Bubba, where are you?
[Missed calls 15]
My wife: AHAD!!!!!!!
Seeing all the messages his expression thoroughly changed, seeing her missing him, his heart wanted to be there to comfort her, seeing her pictures, his heart fluttered as he saw her showing her one side dimple that was just too cute to resist as she smiles giving the best therapy to his little heart, her hazel eyes were shining looking at the camera, keeping his thoughts to himself for some time, he saw the last call from his family was a half hour ago, they might have been worried since he hadn't contacted them since the evening.
Moving towards the parking space, he got in the cab that he had booked when he suddenly remembered his wife wasn't at home... she was at his parent's house... whiny a little... he thought for some time before texting Ashar.
[Chat between Ashar and Ahad]
Ahad: "Ashar?"
Instantly, he got replied.
Moody Gossiper: "Bro, where are you? Do you know how much Hayat has cried and how worried we are?"
Suddenly, Ashar started video-calling him after texting Ahad.
Ahad: I'm all okay, don't call, tell me where everyone is.
Moody Gossiper: I told them to go to sleep while I look for you. Do you know I had to ring our client's phone to find out about you? And they didn't know where you were!
Ashar was worried yet angry at the stupidity of his brother. Remembering how Hayat cried as she couldn't get a hold of Ahad, he was worried that something bad happened to him as the memories of the past started to haunt his mind yet he had to stay calm just for his family.
Ahad: I'm coming home.
Moody Gossiper: YOU SHOULD! AFTER WORRYING US SO MUCH THROUGH!
Instead of calling, they continued to text...
Ahad: I'm on my way to our house Ashar, just tell me if Hayat has slept or not!
Moody Gossiper: I don't know, she went to her room just an hour ago, though...
Ahad: Okay, I'll call you, so open the gates for me, I don't have keys with me.
Ashar: Okay, bhai.
Ahad hoped she wouldn't have fallen ill after crying so much. He was worried for her, but it was also his mistake, then again, he was so affected by the nightmare that he just couldn't resist taking a chance... to tell everyone about his return after the nightmare.
After half an hour, stepping out of the cab, he called Ashar, "Open the gate Ashar," standing outside in the dark street with just a street light glowing nearby.
As soon as the gates were opened Ashar hugged Ahad tightly, taking him off guard, "Woah, what happened Ashar?" Asked Ahad, hugging his brother back, patting his back lightly, sensing his body tense.
"Do you even know how much we were worried, do you even know what I was thinking, don't you know we don't want to lose you too, can't you be a little serious and let us know wherever you are!" Ashar said, his jet-black eyes now teary, thinking about all the possibilities, Ahad's heart clinched seeing his baby brother sobbing like a child because of his mistake.
"I'm sorry, okay, but I had to come as soon as I could since I heard Hayat's confession, do you know I had a nightmare yesterday night, but it was about Hayat's accident and I didn't want it to happen, so I didn't tell anyone about my return back to Pakistan tonight," Ahad said, breaking the hug, telling his brother what was worrying him since yesterday.
"I got it, bhai, but still you could have told me. I would have handled everything. Don't you trust me?" Ashar said, a little saddened as he looked at his brother, helping him get inside with all the luggage he came with.
"It's not like that Ashar, leave everything, right now I need to go and meet Mama and Dad then Hayat," Ahad said whisperingly, trying not to get caught by his family who was in their room sleeping after an exhausting day.
"You go meet Hayat. I'll tell Mama about your arrival. They'll take your classes in the morning though, for now, go to her, she has been crying for hours," Ashar said.
Ahad nodded his head as he dragged his luggage toward his bedroom, Ashar was getting frustrated so he took the luggage from Ahad's hand and whispered, "Leave your luggage here and go bhai, you are stubborn" Turning around Ashar left with Ahad's luggage as Ahad stand there dumbfounded.
"But I have gifts in them for everyone" He spoke slowly which wasn't heard by Ashar.
Shaking his head, he went towards Ashar's room, "Bhai I told you to go meet Hayat, your wife, my sissy, not to come into my room. Have you lost your mind?" Ashar said as soon as he saw Ahad stepping into his room.
Ashar was still upset about him worrying everyone, Ahad slapped the back of Ashar's head, "I came to take this bag, it has gifts for her, I'll book an appointment with a psychologist for you, do go and check what's wrong with you" Ahad rolled his eyes as he got out of the room with his bag, this time Ashar stood their dumbfounded.
Moving towards his room with fast steps, he suddenly tripped and fell on the stairs as he skipped 2 stairs at a time.
But the sudden trip made his ankle hit the stairs making his toe hit harder than he expected as it started to pain him a lot, sitting there on the staircase he rubbed his ankle as he remembered the memory of last month.
Hayat came down the stairs wearing an earthy green color Anarkali dress, paired with silver earrings, her favorite pair of bangles with high heels, he sat there on the sofa with others.
Having a serious conversation with them about the stock market when his eyes went towards the stairs, looking at his beautiful wife coming down all dolled up for the function they were going to attend.
He was awestruck looking at her, seeing her looking directly at him he whispered, "Mi hermosa esposa."
[Translation: My beautiful wife]
He was so much into the moment that he didn't know whether the person next to him understood Spanish or not, his all focus was on her, when he heard, "Sé que es hermosa, hermano, pero no la mires así, nos hace sentir más solteros de lo que ya estamos."
[Translation: I know she's beautiful, brother, but don't look at her like that, it makes us feel even more single than we already are.]
Said Ashar near Ahad's ear, as he was trying to tease Ahad, Ahad came back from his wonderland to look at Ashar angrily.
"When did you learn Spanish?" Asked Ahad as he glanced at his wife who went towards Mama to chat about something.
"The time you were trying to stalk her" Ashar said wiggling his eyebrows.
Ahad was now irritated with the thoughts of, what if someone heard this dumb brother of his, "I never stalked her, I just found her every time I went to see Eira."
Ahad tried to make Ashar understand but Ashar teased him more, "Try to deny all you want but I know you bhai, let me go and tell Hayat about your little crush."
They were bricking silently as Ashar ran towards Hayat, to tease Ahad more, he would never tell Hayat about the secret his beloved brother told him but he could tease him so he ran, while Ahad chased him from behind.
"Hayat, save me," screamed Ashar loudly as he hid behind her, while Ahad stopped midway by the table that was between them.
Hayat stood on the other side of the dining table, behind her was Ashar who wiggled his eyebrows teasing Ahad.
Ahad tried to move towards them without looking at the front when his knee hit the chair, letting out a painful groan, he sat on the chair while rubbing his kneecap.
Hayat ran towards him, kneeled in front of him, and massaged his knee, "Are you blind Ahad, how can you be so careless, couldn't you see the chair, a large chair!" Hayat scolded Ahad as he just glared at Ashar, looking up at him, Hayat saw Ahad glaring at Ashar.
"Don't you dare to glare at him, you hit yourself on your own, it's not his fault!" defending Ashar, said Hayat.
"But he was irritating me, Jaan" Ahad was being scolded for the first time by his dear wife, he was kind of enjoying it, trying not to smile and look innocent at the same time he looked at her pityingly.
"Ahad, you are going to need glasses now!" Hayat said as Ahad hissed in pain because of the sudden slap on his knee by Ashar.
"Do you want me to teach you a thing or two, Ashar?" Said Ahad, getting a little serious, as he was going to stand up to slap Ashar back, when Hayat spoke, shutting Ahad up, "Shut up and sit down, don't you scold him, and don't you ignore what I'm saying right now Ahad!"
Hearing his name from her mouth instead of "Bubba" or "Jaan" he realized she was very serious, "Okay, Jaan, I'm sorry, it won't happen again" he tried to comfort her, holding her hands he continued, "You are looking really beautiful, begum."
Shaking his head a little, he got up and moved towards the room, with fast yet careful steps, not wanting to trip again...
Opening his room door, Ahad went inside to see the lamp's lights were on as Hayat lay on the bed in an uncomfortable position.
He took small and slow steps towards her as he saw her eyes swollen from all the crying, his heart clenched for her, stroking her face for some time, he tried to change her position, taking her right hand which had phone clenched to it, he put it on the side table as he started to cover her up with the quit when suddenly Hayat opened her eyes.
Looking directly at him... she tried to process everything for some time, she tried to touch his face, and as she put her left hand on his cheek, realized he was there in front of her.
She got angry... sad... upset... all emotions bundled up together as she slapped his right cheek, the sudden impact of the slap turned his face to another side instantly, his cheek was all red, Ahad let out a whimper, his mind not able to process what just happened, he thought she'll be happiest and hug him but he got slapped instead, nevertheless he didn't say a word.
Hayat started crying again... but this time hugging him tightly...
Ahad was on his knees in front of the bed when he got slapped and then the sudden hug made him lose balance, in reflex he put his left hand on the ground and right hand around her waist, taking her in his arm, balancing himself on the ground.
He let out a content sigh, "Where were you for the past 12 hours, do you even know how hard it was for me to stay positive?" Hayat said as she hugged him tightly, punching his chest in between.
"I'm sorry, Meri Jaan, but I had to do it, I was affected by a nightmare, and I couldn't take the risk of telling anyone or you about my returning home," Ahad said, caressing her head, placing some small kisses on her forehead in between.
After getting her emotions balanced, Hayat hugged Ahad, not leaving him for a while, while Ahad enjoyed the attention he was getting from his little wife.
"How are you?" she asked looking up at him, her eyes held unshed tears.
"What do you think, hmm?" He questioned in return, Hayat just looked at his face, as Ahad spoke again, "I may not be good with words, I may not say this again, or I may have not shown you what I felt till now the way you want but Hayat."
Taking her cheeks in his both hands, he caressed them as he looked directly into her eyes, with pure emotions, "Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai, aur yia mohabbat us ishq ko paar kr chuki ha ky ab tumhe khone se sirf daar nahi khoof aata ha. Jo Mohabbat mujhe tum se howi ha wo naa mujhe kisi aur se ho sakti hai or naa kabhi hogi, tum wo ek wahid larki ho Jo mere dil ma raaj krti hai aur humesha kry gi"
[Translation: I have fallen in love with you, and this love has transcended that passion to a point. Where now I'm not just afraid of losing you but terrified. The love I have for you can't happen with anyone else, nor will it ever. You are the only one who reigns in my heart and always will.]
His eyes showed pure love, admiration, respect, care, and affection in his words... actions.
Hayat stayed silent for some time, just blinking her eyelashes, while Ahad was getting impatient.
"Say something, love...?" Ahad said in desperation... Hayat once again started to cry, as she spoke, in his embrace.
"Shouldn't you say it with a ring? My ring finger is still empty, and look at me, my eyes are all swollen up. How can you confess in such situations, Ahad?" Hayat was all whiny, her sudden change in mood changed the entire energy in the room.
Ahad just laughed at her silliness, which somehow was right, shaking his head, he spoke, "You were always beautiful in my eyes, in every situation, and you will always remain so. And my love, there's never a wrong time to express matters of the heart."
Hayat nodded her head, understanding him, as she replied in her mind, "I do love you deeply too, but I'm never going to say it aloud."
Her eyes closed as she heard Ahad laugh and realized what she thought was actually what she said, "So, I've expressed my love now, too!" she said, being all shy, hiding herself in his embrace...
"I'll remember this forever," Ahad said, closing his eyes and taking her in his embrace, pecking her head for the last time. They finally sleep in peace.
