Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: “Festival of Fire”

The Fire Festival Begins

Konoha burst into color.

The Spring Fire Festival—an old tradition, once held to honor the Fire Daimyō, now a celebration of life, survival, and warmth after winter—lit up the village with glowing lanterns, food stalls, music, and dancing.

Paper streamers fluttered in the breeze. Candied apples, grilled squid skewers, dango, and fresh mochi perfumes drifted through the air. The streets were filled with laughing villagers, shinobi on leave, and children darting about with sparklers and firecracker pouches tucked in their yukata sleeves.

Renji stood at the village center, wearing a dark blue yukata embroidered with clouds and mist. His silver hair—unruly as ever—was tamed slightly by a thin headband.

Naruto bounced beside him in an orange-patterned yukata, already holding three sticks of meat skewers in one hand and a pouch of festival tickets in the other.

"Man, this is the BEST!" Naruto grinned, mouth full. "So much free food! And Iruka-sensei didn't even yell at me today!"

Renji smiled. "It's nice, isn't it?"

He scanned the crowd—and spotted her.

Hinata's Yukata

Hinata Hyuga stood just across the street, hands tucked nervously in front of her, wearing a soft lavender yukata patterned with tiny plum blossoms. Her hair was styled up with a white flower pin on the side, and faint pink lip gloss sparkled on her lower lip in the lantern light.

She looked like something sacred.

Naruto blinked. "Whoa. Is that… Hinata?!"

Renji felt his throat go dry.

Hinata noticed them. And waved.

But in the process of stepping forward, her right sleeve caught on a passing stall's bamboo pole—and with a panicked little squeak, she stumbled and—

RRRIIIPPP.

The front hem of her yukata caught under her sandal and tore, revealing a wide strip of thigh, pale and smooth and definitely not something she meant to flash in public.

Renji immediately reacted—his body moved before his brain—and he was beside her, wrapping his own festival jacket around her waist in one smooth, fluid motion.

Hinata's face was scarlet. "I-I-I—I—!"

Renji gently whispered, "It's okay. I've got you."

She looked up into his eyes. Their faces close. Her breath hitched.

And the background world disappeared for just a heartbeat.

"Y-you look… nice," she whispered, fingers gripping the fabric around her.

Renji blinked.

"You look… beautiful," he whispered back.

Her blush deepened. She turned her face away, hiding behind her sleeve, which only made her cuter.

Interrupted

"Oi, lovebirds!" Naruto shouted across the street. "They've got cinnamon yakimochi over here! And a goldfish scoop!"

Renji sighed. "We should go."

Hinata giggled.

They joined Naruto at the booth, where chaos instantly resumed. Naruto dunked the scoop wrong and splashed water all over his yukata. Renji tried once and somehow caught three goldfish. Hinata stared at him in disbelief.

"You're so weirdly good at things," she murmured.

"Gifted fingers," Renji smirked. "I've been told."

Hinata choked on her mochi.

Later That Night

The crowd gathered around the main square for the fireworks.

Renji and Hinata had wandered slightly away from the crush of people, standing under a tree, the moonlight filtering between the branches.

The fireworks began.

BOOM.

Crackle.

Color rained across the sky—reds, blues, golds, silver streaks.

Hinata leaned in close beside him. Their shoulders touched.

He turned.

She looked up at him.

No words.

Just tension.

Her lips were slightly parted. Her eyes shimmering.

He leaned forward… and…

CRASH.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

From down the street came Naruto, running for his life—clutching a giant bag of stolen dango in one hand, and being chased by a gang of furious stall vendors with ladles, brooms, and flying sandals.

Renji and Hinata burst into laughter.

"That idiot," Renji sighed.

But she was still holding his hand.

And didn't let go.

In the Shadows – A Stirring

Far across the village, atop the Uchiha compound walls, a cloaked figure watched the fireworks with dispassionate eyes.

Beside him, a shadow flickered.

"He's here," the figure whispered. "The one with the fragmented chakra signature."

"You sure?"

"Yes. But it's not just fragmented. It's old. Ancient. Wrong."

"Orders?"

The first figure's eyes narrowed. "Observe. For now."

They vanished in silence, as the fireworks ended in a final glorious explosion.

Renji's Awakening

Back at home, as Renji lay in bed that night, heart still pounding from the near-kiss and the strange tension, he felt something… shift.

Like a door creaking open in the back of his mind.

He sat up, gasping.

His skin prickled. The world around him slowed.

And for just a second… he saw strings.

Threads.

Lines of chakra in the air. Webs connecting everything.

He blinked—and it vanished.

But his heart knew: something had just unlocked.

Something dangerous.

Something powerful.
