Chapter 37 - Chapter 37 - Flames and Snow

The snow still fell, but gentler now—like the aftermath of a fevered breath. Hayate Kurigawa's body lay still, encased in the quieting embrace of frost. The wind he once commanded had calmed, as if bowing in respect to the woman who had defied it.

Asaki knelt beside Ishikawa, breath shallow, hands shaking. Not from fear—but from the weight of everything left unsaid.

"You're hurt," she whispered.

"I'll live." He coughed, a weak smile tugging at his cracked lips. "Thanks to you."

She looked down at him, her expression softening. "You've always fought for others, Ishikawa… even when your own heart was breaking."

His eyes met hers—dark, stormy, yet steady. "I never told you," he said, voice low. "That night when we met for first time . When you ran into the save the girl . I thought… you are fool too…but look at me .... I am fighting for fool. And I barely lose you ."

Asaki leaned closer, brushing snow-dampened hair from his brow. "You didn't lose me. I was just… trying to find myself."

He reached up, fingers grazing her cheek. "I saw your dance. It was… beautiful."

She smiled, but tears welled. "It was for you."

The silence between them was thick—but not heavy. It was tender, filled with unspoken threads that tied them through battles, blood, and brittle hope. Ishikawa slowly rose, wincing, and leaned against the ruined pillar.

She helped steady him.

Their hands touched—and lingered.

"I was afraid," she confessed. "That if I loved someone in this world… it would only give fate another thing to take away."

He gripped her hand tighter. "Then let fate try."

Snow caught on her lashes. The courtyard, broken as it was, felt like a dream suspended in quiet twilight. Ishikawa leaned forward. Slowly. Purposefully.

And Asaki met him halfway.

Their lips touched—soft at first, hesitant. Then deeper, as if two pieces of the same shattered soul had finally found alignment.

In the distance, thunder rolled—not from the sky, but from drums. War drums.

They broke apart, breathless. Ishikawa's eyes hardened. "The Black Banners…"

Asaki's grip on Kiyoki tightened. "We move. Together."

Meanwhile, in the Southern Fortress of Edo

Kagutsuchi Kagoshima, clad in robes of crimson flame and obsidian silk, stood before the shōji screen, watching the snowfall beyond. His features were serene—handsome, youthful, noble—but his aura seethed.

Behind him, Vice-Captain Miyazato Machinagaikeda bowed low, the ceremonial spear at his side humming with chakra. A symbol of loyalty to the Kagoshima line.

"You summoned me, my lord?" Miyazato asked.

Kagutsuchi's gaze did not waver from the window. "The Aizu are falling, piece by piece. Hayate Kurigawa is dead. And yet the shogunate still refuses to grant me full authority to strike the final blow."

He turned, eyes glowing faintly with an ember's edge.

"I am tired of being treated like a child. I carry the blood of heaven in my veins—and I will not be bound by dying lords who rot in palanquins while the world burns."

Miyazato hesitated. "Shall I relay your message to Lord Hosokawa?"

"No," Kagutsuchi said coldly. "I shall deliver it myself."

He strode forward, wind trailing his haori like a cloak of fire. As he passed, his presence ignited a nearby candle into a flare of blue flame.

"But… my lord," Miyazato said quickly. "You cannot threaten a feudal lord directly. His retainers—"

Kagutsuchi raised a hand, silencing him.

Later, in the Audience Hall of Lord Hosokawa

The noble sat cross-legged upon an elevated dais, flanked by guards in lacquered armor. Scrolls, maps, and incense burned slowly at his side. A tired, sagging face looked down at Kagutsuchi with wary interest.

"You barge in without appointment," Lord Hosokawa murmured. "Is this how the scion of the Kagoshima line behaves now?"

"I come not as scion," Kagutsuchi replied, voice calm as oil before a spark. "But as the flame that will reshape this land."

The guards stiffened.

"Bold words," the lord said. "You would defy the hierarchy?"

Kagutsuchi's hands stayed at his sides, but the room grew warmer. "I offer a warning. While the nobles dither, the ronin gather strength. Ishikawa walks free. Nakajima is dead. Hayate has fallen. Every piece you trusted to keep balance has shattered."

"Then we rebuild—"

"No." Kagutsuchi's eyes flared. "We incinerate. And rise anew."

A sudden blur.

One of Lord Hosokawa's personal guards—Kurobei, a giant of a man wielding an iron club—stepped forward. "You insult the lord. You will apologize or bleed."

Kagutsuchi's face remained unchanged. "You think you can silence fire with threats?"

Kurobei charged. A roar filled the chamber.

And in an instant, flame met flesh.

Kagutsuchi stepped forward, hand trailing in the air. A searing arc of fire traced his motion. Kurobei froze—his body halted mid-swing.

A second later, the man burst into flames, screaming as cursed fire consumed him from the inside out.

He fell in silence, reduced to ash.

The chamber reeked of burnt cloth and death.

Kagutsuchi looked back at Lord Hosokawa.

"Tell the others," he said, brushing cinders from his sleeve. "Tell them the era of brittle balance is over."

He turned.

"And that the Dragon of Ash has begun to breathe."

Back on the snowy plains near Aizu

Ishikawa and Asaki marched beside the survivors of the rebellion. Among them, the wounded, the exiled, and the still-burning hopeful.

A makeshift camp had been built along the frozen riverbank. Children huddled near braziers. Ronin patrolled the treeline.

Asaki leaned on Ishikawa's shoulder as they walked.

"Do you think he's coming?" she asked.

"Kagutsuchi?"

She nodded.

"He will," Ishikawa said. "We've killed his shadow. Now the flame must come in person."

Asaki looked up at the night sky.

No stars. Just clouds of drifting ash.

"Then we fight. Even if it's our last stand."

Ishikawa smiled faintly. "Together?"

"Together."

But neither of them saw the figure that watched from the trees. Small. Hooded.

With a flute carved from bone.

She raised it to her lips.

And played the first note of mourning.
