Ye Lu leaned wearily against the wall, tears glistening in her eyes: "I rushed over like a madwoman in the dead of night, driving recklessly, hoping to win your sympathy. But with a heart as cold and unyielding as yours, maybe sympathy isn't something you even possess. Then I thought yelling and questioning you might wake you up. If that doesn't work, I'll use all my money to buy you off, but you still remain unmoved. What do I do? I can't give up. If all else fails, I'll use truth, kindness, and beauty to touch you. Is humanity innately evil? Yet I refuse to stop believing it's innately good!"
Dr. K stared at her, his expression practically mocking her like she was an idiot. Waking up the tiny shred of humanity left in him—was that what she wanted?
"What if truth, kindness, and beauty fail to touch me? What else can you do?"
He was curious to see what other tricks she had. Human effort has its limits, and he didn't believe she wouldn't eventually despair.
