Chapter 27 - NYLA'S SCAR

Nyla's Enduring Scar

Nyla had lived behind a mask ever since she woke up with the disfiguring scar. She'd racked her brain, desperately trying to recall its origin, but all her efforts were futile. Now, as she woke, a chilling dread crept over her. The scar was expanding, its edges deepening into an angry, black hue. A piercing scream tore from her throat; it was happening again. The pain, excruciating, burned far worse than the day she first discovered it. She crumpled to the floor, writhing in agony. She should have died, not suffer like this.

"Nyla!" a woman, seemingly her mother, around forty-six or forty-seven, cried out. "Oh no, the scar!" she panicked, recognizing the terrible transformation. Usually, it took Nyla three hours to recover from this hellish torment. The woman rushed forward, clutching a small, wet handkerchief, intending to ease the searing pain. But to her shock, before the damp cloth even touched Nyla's face, it burned. "What!" she exclaimed, recoiling in disbelief.

After two hours of agonizing torment, as if by some dark magic, the pain abruptly ceased. Nyla returned to normal, though exhausted. Her mother stood transfixed, still reeling from the bizarre phenomenon. "Keep this from Dad, okay?" Nyla warned, her voice weak but firm.

"But darling, it's better to tell him," the woman countered, her brow furrowed with concern.

"Mom, please," Nyla pleaded, and the woman reluctantly, helplessly, agreed.

Nyla stumbled to the mirror. The scar had receded, back to its usual state, and her face regained its natural color, leaving only the grim reminder. But a reminder of what? She still couldn't piece it together. Oh, how she despised her face, forever hidden. She'd visited countless hospitals, tried an array of creams, all in vain. The scar was as stubborn and wicked as the person who had inflicted it. But who was that person? It hurt, not to remember. She couldn't even grasp a hint... Argh, this was utterly frustrating! With a sigh, she pulled her mask back on, covering her entire face, and quietly left the room.
