The reason humans feel lost is because they discover their original intentions are completely incompatible with the world. Once they blend into the secular world, they find that the gains from it ultimately end in emptiness.
Therefore, many people start to numb themselves in emptiness, creating seemingly colorful entertainment, trying to convince themselves that life is just so. Even the so-called great Western philosophers can't extricate themselves from nihilism, arriving at pessimistic conclusions.
Philosophy and Buddhism are different.
Philosophy often discusses theories, starting optimistically filled and ending at nihilism and pessimism. Buddhism, on the other hand, must be practiced; it starts with seemingly pessimistic nihilism and concludes with true fulfillment.
