'My good talent in Genjutsu should be because of the high amount of spiritual energy that I have. It should also help me break out from at least weaker genjutsus easily. But without an eye power like the Sharingan, no matter how much I train Genjutsu, it would be weaker compared to the Sharingan's Genjutsu. But I still want to learn it. It can be pretty helpful against people with no dojutsu to protect them from Genjutsu..' Ken thought
'I was not planning on learning medical ninjutsu and puppetry so it's not a big deal that I have no talent in it. Having sensor skills is also useful to be safe from ambushes or to gauge the strength of an enemy. Poison arts is incredibly useful and a deadly skill. At least I should know when I or my comrade has been poisoned and which antidote I should use.'
'Kenjutsu is also useful and can solve my weakness at close range if I have some talent in it. There is no need to tell about the multiple uses of fuinjutsu.'
'So I have to choose between Genjutsu, Sensory, Fuinjutsu, Poison arts and Kenjutsu. I can't be spreading myself too thin by trying to learn all of them at once. I have not even started on wind and water chakra natures, let alone ice release. I should just start with two of them and once I have more time or I have mastered some of the things, I could switch to the others.' After thinking about all of this, Ken decided what he wanted to learn.
"So what do you want to focus on Ken?" Hiruzen asked seeing Ken come out of his concentration state.
"I have decided to learn Sensory and Kenjutsu Grandpa," Ken said resolutely
'Oh, He did not even choose any of fuinjutsu and genjutsu which I recommended to him. Well, in his defense I did say to him to forge his own path. How the young grow up so fast.' Hiruzen thought melancholy
"If I may ask Ken, Why did you choose these two over the others Ken?" Hiruzen asked curious why his grandson chose these two over other better options.
"I chose Kenjutsu to help me in close combat. This would reduce my weakness in close combat due to my poor taijutsu skills. I want to learn sensory because if I can't sense an enemy approaching me or striking me from my blind spot, it would not matter how many ninjutsu or kekkei Genkai I have, I would die without doing anything. This does not mean that I won't focus on fuinjutsu or genjutsu. I would do it in the future once I am satisfied with my Kenjutsu and sensory skills. These two would help me reduce my major weaknesses."
'He is truly a prodigy and a genius. He is thinking about his weaknesses at the age of five. The other children of his age are still wetting their beds.' Hiruzen was proud of his grandson.
"While they are great choices Ken and I can understand you choosing Kenjutsu but It would be incredibly tough for you to become a sensor." Hiruzen said
"You are not a natural born sensor or have a kekkei Genkai that helps in sensing like Byakugan. You might develop a talent for sensory in the future but you don't have it right now." He paused for a second and then continued
"You want to become a sensor because of their ability to detect attacks as well as enemies? Right?"
"Yes" Ken replied
"Sensors can detect enemies that's true. You see even for sensor types, detecting chakra is not an automatic process; in order to sense chakra, the shinobi must actively be kneading chakra. They must also change their chakra to "sensory mode" making it possible for them to miss important events if they are preoccupied with an ongoing battle. Since concentration is required, it can be difficult to participate in battle while focusing on sensing."
"Furthermore, even a sensor type must be able to see an attack coming with their eyes in order to effectively counter it. That means detecting attacks is not possible in the midst of a battle."
"Does that mean I can't sense my enemies while in a battle? Then how do shinobi prevent someone from backstabbing them or protect themselves from a surprise attack in the middle of battle." Ken asked curious
"They sharpen their body's sensing skills. The body's sensing skills include your sense of smell, touch, hearing, sight and taste. If someone throws a kunai to the back of a shinobi, it makes a wooshing sound, the shinobi dodge it as soon as they hear that sound. You can smell or taste poison. Inazuka shinobi can smell if someone is sneaking behind them. There is much more to it. Then there is the sixth sense a shinobi has, intuition or some people call it as shinobi's danger sense."
"For sensing enemies, I will give you an earth jutsu scroll which would help you sense enemies. It can be used in a middle of a battle but it can't tell you anything except the positions of the enemy. You can work on your five senses as well as your reflexes and flexibility to dodge surprise attacks instead of learning how to become a sensor. It would take a lot of your time if you want to become a true sensor."
"So I ask you again if you still want to pursue being a sensor ninja," Hiruzen said
'I only wanted sensing skills to save my life in case of a surprise attack and to prevent myself from getting caught off guard by an ambush. But since what Grandpa mentioned could solve my problems, I do not have any need for them. So what should I choose instead of sensory now? It's a toss-up between Genjutsu and Fuinjutsu. Well, it's quite an easy choice.'
"Grandpa, I would then want to start learning fuinjutsu." Ken said as Hiruzen had a wide smile on his face hearing his grandson's choice.
