First, he had Milton Bryce rent a place with better living conditions, then procured new household items and bought a large ceramic fish tank for keeping fish.
These days, an ordinary worker's monthly income was merely fifty or sixty bucks, so the 300 they earned from selling fish was enough to cover expenses for quite a while.
They didn't give up their original rented place either. Aaron Ray said suddenly moving out would look too high-profile and invite unwanted attention. Milton Bryce fully agreed, assuming the position of following Aaron Ray's lead in everything, since the rental term for the original place was a year, forfeiting the lease wouldn't return the deposit anyhow.
Aaron Ray's new residence was in a five-story dormitory building, a two-bedroom apartment. It was on the first floor, so it came with a private little yard, but still, compared to the former Ray Residence, it was quite humble.
